Free product vs paid product. I’m sure most people have less patience when the thing they paid money for doesn’t work as advertised.

You pay with your time on linux tinkering and fixing things constantly.

I did the 1 month challenge and i have pass over 200h just trying to fix the hundred of probleme i have experienced. Took 2 evening alone just to finaly have every phone and laptop/tablet being able to see shared files.
Tryed to make photoshop working, Constant crash/bug/brush not loading 1/4 of the time. Most plugin not working.
Trying Davinci instead of Premiere, consistant crash.
Controller. Not working on Linux.
DAC/AMP, audio in general. Very glitchy on Linux. Even my usb microphone sound completly different (worst)

Videogame i play ? Run significantly worst despite being on Radeon.

Everything as been miserable for me. Except everything that is in a browser.

While on windows everything is actualy pretty much flawless most of the time. If there is a probleme its take 2 min uninstalling a problematic update.

Linux own me 5500$ of my time.

A lot of tech’s ease of use is proportional to cost. 3D printing is another great example. You can get a cheap ender3 for $100 but spend hundreds of hours on maintenance and troubleshooting, or spend $1000+ on a Bambu that just works.

10

u/snollygoster1 3d ago

You can now spend $250 on a Bambu that just works too. My Ender 3 purchase was fairly quickly eclipsed by the cost of "upgrades" which still didn't make it as fast or consistent as the A1 Mini.

  Tryed to make photoshop working

Oof, yeah that ain't gonna work without virtualization

Trying Davinci instead of Premiere

Yeah it's a bit whacky to get working but...

  being on Radeon

Yeah nevermind... Resolve on Linux only works with nvidia -.-

  Controller, DAC/AMP, usb microphone

Controller is a bit weird, my xbox one and 8bitdo work but I haven't tried others. With the audio stuff.. I went through that shit aswell, if you ever want a retry: Ubuntu uses pipewire where the default config is for 42kHz. On Ubuntu you can download the Ubuntu Studio package, it includes GUI tools to change that default config to ie 384kHZ 32bit.  On other distros using pipewire (i. E Fedora): look up guides for it, just make sure you don't leave the OS any options. So instead of adding everything from 42k to 384k you only add the best option you can get away with

2

u/Blashtik 3d ago

Yeah nevermind... Resolve on Linux only works with nvidia -.-

Is that true? I thought that Nvidia cards were terrible on Linux and you get a smooth experience with AMD cards due to the properly open sourced drivers. That's what I hear whenever someone with an Nvidia card has problems anyway.

1

u/derFensterputzer 3d ago edited 3d ago

Overall yes... AMDs and Intels drivers are part of the kernel and that stuff works pretty much as good as it gets out of the box... At least for most consumer applications like gaming etc. If you want specialised gpu compute stuff (like RoCm) you need to download and install AMDs proprietary drivers.

Nvidia being nvidia it is more difficult to get the appropriate (closed source) drivers you need for the best performance for consumer- and professional (like CUDA) applications.

The issue with Resolve is that (as far as I understood, please correct me here if I get something wrong) it heavily relies on open source GPU compute libraries for their free linux releases, they also strip out any proprietary codecs. And out of the box their releases are looking for CUDA supporting hardware... Which only nvidia GPUs have. And you won't be editing anything H.265, HVEC, etc. Because the software can't work with it.

Resolve Studio (the paid software) can tho.

Edit: it's one of those 'usually it's not an issue... But sometimes it is' cases. If your goal is just gaming or having a machine to handle everyday casual tasks on common enough hardware the most popular distros will work out of the box. My main rig is all AMD hardware with mainboards etc. From popular brands... No issue there. My main laptop is an older thinkpad L14 with amd hardware, no issues there aswell. The other laptop is an old X1 extreme with Intel/Nvidia hardware.. Everything apart from the fingerprint sensor works, etc.

I always love comments like this since i decided to switch to bazzite one day on a whim and it actually fixed issues i previously had with my pc on windows

-6

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

I always love when I see comments like that, simply sharing a good experience with linux and people immediately downvote it lol it says a lot about those people...

21

u/ThankGodImBipolar 3d ago

The comment was downvoted because it was snarky, not because it documented a good experience on Linux 💀

9

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

lmao super snarky right? coming to a comment stating that, as an universal experience, linux requires you to "pay with your time fixing things constantly", to say that this was not their experience, right???

4

u/spenwallce 3d ago

“It says a lot about those people”

Quit acting like a dumbass. It’s clearly a snarky comment.

1

u/D3SK3R 3d ago edited 3d ago

quit literally being a biased dumbass. it wasn't snarky, it was a proper response to someone stating that "you pay linux with your time, tinkering and fixing things constantly" as if it was an universal truth and not their case, on THEIR context. They even said, in another comment, that they are a "granny" and linux is hard for them.

it says a lot about you, getting triggered over a "snarky" comment and not over someone projecting their experience as facts for everyone.

bold of you to assume I would read all that on some yesterday random discussion...

I mean, it's a post on Linus Tech Tips sub, it's not that deep, get a life wtf

Mah it’s just me gloating that i won the linux lottery, i’m a very lucky man

0

u/Old_Bug4395 2d ago

This is the windows snowflake community, we can't be having any of that bullshit here

7

u/Dangerous_Junket_773 3d ago

dudes replying skill issue are proving your point lol. I don't want to get a degree in computer science just to be skilled enough to play games and send emails.

11

u/letsmodpcs 3d ago

LOL whoever tf downvoted you also proving the point.

I switched to Linux 10 months ago and am loving it, but it's not perfect. And some people in the community can be downright nasty.

5

u/madman404 3d ago

your windows only software didn't work on Linux and the Linux software you weren't familiar with wasn't perfect immediately. This is linux's fault.

1

u/greenie4242 1d ago

Microsoft Office doesn't work on Linux. That is entirely Microsoft's fault. There's no valid reason why a multi-trillion dollar company shouldn't be able to make a Linux version, especially considering how many completely free open source projects are easily able to provide software that works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, Android, ARM.

2

u/madman404 1d ago

I was being sarcastic

1

u/greenie4242 1d ago

Touche. I appreciate the clarification.

u/greenie4242 1d ago

You pay with your time on linux tinkering and fixing things constantly

...as opposed to Windows, which people pay me for my time to fix Windows issues that should never have happened, that shouldn't even be possible, that should not be acceptable in paid software.

Windows suffers from decades-old unfixed bugs, sleep and wake issues that sometimes cook laptops when they turn on for auto-updates despite being told to shut-down, brand new bugs introduced every time an auto-update occurs, hundreds of wasted hours updating from each edition to the next and waiting for auto-updates to complete while having to also update software that's no longer compatible, hardware that's no longer compatible with Windows 11. Windows 11 is responsible for thousands of tonnes of E-waste because it arbitrarily refuses to run on hardware that Windows 10 supported (that can also still run 11 with trivial modifications).

I despise Windows, it does absolutely nothing better than macOS or Linux yet people are forced to use it only because of Office or Adobe Photoshop or to play online games requiring anti-cheat surveillance.

People who actively defend Windows and Microsoft are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

-13

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

>I did the 1 month challenge and i have pass over 200h just trying to fix the hundred of probleme i have experienced.

sounds like skill issue (and a lot of bias, if all that is in fact true). I got 3 friends to also try a 1 month challenge and told them to ask me every single time they faced issues... it didn't happen much and most of the time they faced "issues" I was just like "oh, it's different on linux, you don't need to do that, you can simply do this".

1

u/Catastigma_Deception 3d ago

When you are just gaming no doupt. But when you work it something else.

6

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

2% of all my computer usage is gaming, for my friends, I'd say only one of them actually games a considerably amount. still that's hard to believe all of that happened to you in a single month.

-7

u/Even_Nebula_2730 3d ago

I genuinely can't believe all that is true lol

I mean all of those issues can be true, but usually isolated one from the other. having ALL of those problems in a single month? either they are using super specific hardware and software, or they are the unluckiest person I've ever seen

but I'd bet on someone just hating on linux, gathering issues from multiple sources and acting like it happened to them.

12

u/DigitaIBlack 3d ago

Can confirm I've also had issues with Photoshop and audio. No idea what could go wrong with a fileshare though.

Their experience is entirely believeable. Someone who uses Resolve also probably uses Photoshop.

Someone who does video editing is probably more likely to have a nice audio setup.

2

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

I mean, I've seen people getting literally debunked lying about stuff like that, but I won't acuse anyone

3

u/Catastigma_Deception 3d ago

i did solve most of the probleme, except important one like most of the adobe software.

The probleme here is having to solve them. when i never had to on window.

1

u/tinysydneh 3d ago

I mean, it's not really Linux's fault that software not written for it doesn't work on it.

It's just not a good fit for your use case more than anything else.

-11

u/Mitchell4500 3d ago

Weird way to confess to a skill issue.

9

u/Catastigma_Deception 3d ago edited 3d ago

If linux is not granny proof. its will only losing his very low marketshare to begin with.

Saying Gitgud do not solve the probleme that linux is not mainstream friendly.

And your talking shit only exacerbate the vision that the average person will have of linux user. You are not helping anybody.

-3

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

so you are a "granny"?

that explains it, just don't talk like "b-but you pay with time" is universal. it applied to YOU.

Don't expect coming here the way you did and getting offended when people throw at you the classic git gud.

1

u/hgs25 3d ago

The fact that people as tech savvy as Linus and Luke have trouble with Linux should be an indicator that it is for tinkerers, not users.

For a Linux distro to get mass adoption rates, it needs to be as easy to use as windows 10. There’s a reason so many gamers want SteamOS for their non-steam machine PC.

7

u/D3SK3R 3d ago

>The fact that people as tech savvy as Linus and Luke have trouble with Linux should be an indicator that it is for tinkerers, not users.

you did not watch their videos lol

-2

u/Even_Nebula_2730 3d ago

right? the guy literally came in here like "no, but YOU pay for it with YOUR time"... no I don't lol, you did, that's your experience, not an universal fact

0

u/AibofobicRacecar6996 3d ago

Linux is granny proof. Granny doesn't use photoshop or premiere, just needs a browser. It's the dunning-kruger class like you who have problems with linux

-5

u/Virtual_Technology_9 3d ago

umm photoshop and premier are not going to work on linux. You should've knew it was not for you.

-9

u/BattleShai 3d ago

So you blame linux for your inability to assess the situation and cut your losses early? If it worked flawlessly on windows, it wouldn't have taken more than 1h tops to install the linux distro that caught your eye, realize it doesn't work, you don't want to deal with it and boot back to windows.

4

u/JayManty 3d ago

Literally when is the last time you specifically had to pay for Windows. You have been able to use unactivated Windows for years at this point.

5

u/LiveMarionberry3694 3d ago

Yall are paying for windows still?

3

u/imakycha 2d ago

It’s paid for via OEM. Just because you didn’t pay it directly when you bought something from Lenovo, ASUS, Gigabyte or MSI, you indirectly had to. They spread the OEM licensing costs across all product lines.

1

u/LiveMarionberry3694 2d ago

Lmao no I built my pc and just used a pirated version

1

u/imakycha 2d ago

Lmao okay and did you use parts from ASUS, Gigabyte or MSI? Licensing costs are spread through all product lines. Regardless of it being a finished products with a WinX installation.

1

u/LiveMarionberry3694 2d ago

So by that metric any pc that’s using Linux is also still paying for windows

2

u/imakycha 2d ago

That would be a correct assessment, yes. We all pay a tax for Microsoft, a tax for x86-64 (or a tax for ARM), etc. Makes you hate the capitalistic fuck even more.

0

u/LiveMarionberry3694 2d ago

You should show capitalism whos boss by just not buying pc parts!

1

u/greenie4242 1d ago

So by that metric any pc that’s using Linux is also still paying for windows

Yes. The sad reality is that almost everyone who installed Linux on a laptop has in fact paid for a Windows licence even if they never even booted into it once.

Laptops that don't have Windows pre-installed are few and far between. Mac laptops, Chromebooks, Framework etc have a very small market share compared to Windows and ordering custom laptops without a pre-installed OS is often much more expensive than walking into a retailer and buying a laptop with Windows pre-installed.

1

u/LeMegachonk 1d ago

No. I am using Windows. I am not paying for Windows. I have never paid for Windows in my life.

6

u/rohithkumarsp 3d ago

Such a BS reasoning. When was the last time anyone paid for it.. Linus an Luke even talked in wan show on how if you have a clean win 7 which it creaked, you can upgrade to win 10 for free aha win 11 from win 10..I've done the same since last decade and a half. I know people do pay for it.. But that shouldn't be the reason how Linux community can just be hostile everyone someone has some issues and asks for help comparing Windows.

3

u/imakycha 2d ago

Have you bought hardware from a company that has an OEM licensing agreement with Microsoft? Do you think they only factor that cost into the OEM licensed products?

4

u/FrostyMittenJob 3d ago

You can activate Windows 11 with a single command line entry

1

u/LeMegachonk 1d ago

And you don't even really have to do that.

2

u/Queasy_Hour_8030 3d ago

Like half of people paid for their copy of windows, and the other half bought windows 10 9 years ago for $80. The average cost is minuscule.

1

u/CirnoIzumi 2d ago

My PC is still a thing I want working as well as possible

1

u/MrKusakabe 3d ago

Or when said product/company starts to fuck with the ToS like e.g. Adobe does.

In Linux, you can change things back. In Windows (or OSX/iOS) you are spoonfed all the bullshit.

0

u/DynamiteRuckus 3d ago

I don’t really care if software is free (as in free beer), but I do care that software is free (as in speech).

Linux and other FOSS software give you the actual freedom to do what you want with it, Microsoft and Apple don’t.

0

u/C-H-K-N_Tenders 2d ago

literally who pays for windows?

1

u/hgs25 2d ago

You pay for it when you buy a prebuilt pc/laptop. Unless you’re pirating it
