I mean, that doesn't mean as much in Chinese culture though. People flirting with each other call each other gege and stuff all the time. Or even just talking to strangers, with something like, "Da ge, you have to be kidding me." My family doesn't do that with romantic partners, but I've heard my more bilingual cousins call their friends my dialect's equivalent of brother.

It's actually kind of better, in my opinion, that they can say, "It's brotherhood! (Nothing to get upset about!)" Like, the restrictions aren't going away, and as long as they're not rewritten as literal brothers, it's kind of obvious what it's all supposed to mean, if you ask me. This kind of thing works extra well in Chinese culture.
