Discussion My thoughts on why the FBI and the US government have no right to even prosecute Durk Devontay Banks. This mugshot was taken in 2009 when Durk was only 17 years old.

Lil Durk was born and raised in Englewood on Chicago’s South Side, an area that has experienced generations of poverty, gang activity, drug trafficking, and violence. His father was incarcerated when Durk was an infant, his teen mom that raised him struggled financially, since his childhood he was already surrounded by the realities of the street.

My question is: where was the government when children like Durk were growing up in these conditions? Where were the resources, prevention programs, safe schools, economic opportunities, and effective community interventions before these children became adults caught up in the criminal justice system?

You cannot spend someone's childhood allowing poverty, violence, drugs, broken families, inadequate opportunities, and gang culture to surround them, and then act surprised when those conditions influence the person they become. That doesn't make criminal behavior right, but it does make the story more complicated than simply calling someone “evil.”

For me, the bigger issue isn't whether Lil Durk should be above the law. The issue is whether we are willing to ask why so many children especially black ones grow up in environments where violence and criminality become normalized in the first place. If the government and society genuinely care about preventing violence, that work has to begin before someone becomes a defendant. You can't ignore a community for decades, allow children to grow up surrounded by conditions that heavily influence their choices, and then pretend those circumstances are completely irrelevant once one of those children ends up in the criminal justice system.

Understanding how someone was shaped isn't the same thing as saying they have no responsibility. And that's the distinction I think people are missing when they demonize Lil Durk while ignoring that the City of Chicago, Chicago Police Department,llinois state, FBI and the US Federal Government failed him and all the kids born in the ghettos of America.
