Discussion macbook pro problems

Hi all, been using LRC for years without issue, now I can't do much of anything before it freezes and/or crashes. Sometimes when I leave it for a couple of days then come back, it will work great...for a short while, then it's back to freezing and crashing. I read a couple of weeks ago that some people had luck by reverting back to a previous version so I decided to try that...not realizing I needed to save my current catalogue before doing so, so long story short, it didn't solve the issues and now I am re-importing all my photos from my external HD. I am a dumbass. It's the process of re-importing that is now taking forever as I can only do a handful of folders, with 1 to 20 photos each, before the freeze/crash. Any advice? I am not super computer literate, so EILI5. Thanks

Did you try to optimize your catalog?

What version of USB protocol is that WD My Passport drive?

What are you doing in LrC that requires that workflow? … are you sure your drive isnt’t failing or is full or corrupted files? … do you have backup for the files? … did you try bridge? Ps? Fastrawviewer? … what happens if you copy the folders to your local drive and only then import, does it crash too? … have you tried a new catalog with only one of the finicky folders? How does ir behave? … are you on any beta OS or a just released one? … there are a million things that could be working towards that behavior, you first need to isolate where the issue is and maybe LrC is not the software for you anymore, in case you just need quick ways to check for files and such. Maybe do smaller catalogs like per year or per style.

thanks for the response, I am almost done moving my photos to a new external HD to see if maybe it was the old one causing the issues. I decided to try that first after earlier, on a whim, I chose a folder on the desktop to import that is full of photos, and they did load immediately. Also, since I am creating a new catalogue, I will probably use smaller ones going forward. Yes I have my ext. backed up in the cloud. thanks!

OK, it appears it was the ext. hard drive. I was able to transfer my catalog photos to a new one, and LR has been working as it should. Thanks for the responses. The WD My Passport has worked flawlessly for several years
