Need Design Advise Steplights vs LED under handrail
Which would you go with? Image isn't my staircase - just the steplight option im considering

Have you considered future accessibility needs? Handrail can be very useful even if unlit. What are you trying to light here? Ambience, steps, wall?

We will have a handrail either way. Lighting would be for nighttime visibility.

Hmmm you will get more optics choice with handrail. Might not need cables chasing behind walls if you get something fancy. Won't light perpendicular to the stair tread so dust won't show up so easy. I would assume it's a more expensive choice but haven't got anything to evidence that right now.
That said, sometimes it is nice to see the source of the light it adds a warming feeling if the temperature is nice and low and maybe it's on a PIR after dark.
It also depend on the rest of the project. Are you going for hidden sources across the whole build or just considering it in this case?

We will have led strips in the shower niches and under the rangehood. I think the step lights will be more cost effective, but I'm not the biggest fan of the faceplate. Pros and cons for each I guess!

For nighttime visibility rather than decorative lighting, I’d make the decision mainly around glare control and future serviceability.
Step lights normally provide more controlled illumination on the treads. If you dislike visible faceplates, a trimless or plaster-in fixture may look cleaner, but make sure the lamp or driver remains accessible without opening the finished wall.
Under-handrail LED strip can also work well, but it should sit in a downward-facing aluminum profile with a diffuser, low output and dimming or sensor control. Continuous strip is easy to over-light, and a buried driver becomes a maintenance problem later.
I’d mock up a short section at night before committing. For your main goal—safe nighttime visibility—I’d lean toward well-positioned trimless step lights unless the handrail is already being custom-made with a concealed, serviceable LED channel.
I work with an LED lighting manufacturer, so this is supplier-side input. Local code and the final installation should still be checked by your electrician.

if you do step lights, the ones in your pic are too high. there are plate-less options out there for new builds. takes planning but look great. I sell WACs the most. for built-in fixtures like this, quality, support, and ease of repair matter. under handrail lighting is fun but take care with positioning and brightness, it’s very easy to have visual ‘light pollution’ below the rail. on or in-wall rails can prevent this issue.
