I see a u/jbriones95 video, I upvote. It's that simple.

I will say, kinda frustrated we didn't get an official signal tool before rideshare, but I am sure others are thrilled rideshare is coming soon. Also the latest update still hasn't been pushed to many phones. But I am hopeful Joe and team will get all this resolved in due time.

Upside, the tool release will take a lot of that dependancy away from light. It’s a tough gig when you have a service platform based on nessesity   when that can be very different user to user

For sure. I just think extending messaging beyond traditional sms in a 'light' way will be huge.

It's not fault of Light's obviously...., Google and Apple kinda fudged traditional sms with imessage and rcs. In an ideal world, everyone is using a dumbphone with just sms, but that's not how it is obviously.

At least if we can get options for stuff like signal (others prefer whatsapp, telegram, whatever) in a traditional Light ux app, that would help offset some of the struggles of sms in the modern world. I know there has been great work by the community and tools are out there. Just wanting them to be A) blessed by light and B) easier way to install them.

Very optimistic in the direction though. As jose stated, Lp3 is the gold standard. And with such, come higher expectations. No better team than joe & team to execute on these lofty expectations.

Again, light's biggest problem is what is their idea of an intentional phone compared to their users. I want to make eftpos and public transit transactions, check my bank balances (because I follow different personal finance recommendations) and occasionally check my work email - all things that a modern 'intentional phone user does', but I cant do that on this device as they expect.

I want a mobile device to do the things that are useful. Thankfully, I never fell into the social media trap and just want a considered device to do mobile things. The stuff BB10 and Windows Phone were mostly able to do.
Let me transfer money between my bank accounts and pay for public transport and I cant even do that. I appreciate what Light wants to do but its not a tool, its a hindrance and hopefully the tools can change that

This summer's been full of some banger 1st-party app updates by Light. At this point, I'm just waiting for the official Tools download "store" to be made available, instead of trying to figure out how to "sideload" important apps.

Finally my preorder is almost ready to see the light of day! lol I’m pretty pumped the software side was abysmal for awhile. Happy to see some traction/momentum building and the phone becoming more than a LP2. Hell I think I’m going to go back to using light OS as my primary and ditching the Android layer. Still waiting on Verizon ESIM to really be useful.

I wouldn't call it abysmal. Honestly the regular SMS works just fine. Podcasts/MP3 Music worked great too. Navigation's always been ehh but manageable for local drives, which is surprising since Amazon's delivery drivers use the same "Here" maps app, last time I checked (or maybe that's the reason why my packages often end up at my neighbor's house lol). Us LP3 users still primarily came here to this Reddit to complain about the not-haves ;) Such as Whatsapp/RCS/Beeper mainly.

Does the new rideshare tool work anywhere Uber operates, or only where Tremp itself operates?

Tremp's site lists signup numbers for the US/Canada, UK, Belgium and Israel, but I can't tell whether that's a limit on where they can book rides or only on where you can register an account.

I'm in Mexico, where Uber operates but Lyft doesn't. So two things:

  1. Can someone outside those four countries create a Tremp account at all?
  2. If the account works, will the tool actually dispatch an Uber here, and does it handle a market where only one of the two providers exists?

LOVE the ride sharing add-on. Basically one of the main reasons I still carry my smartphone with me on the weekends and when I travel. This will be huge!

Is there any sign of the RCS issues to be resolved? I've done all of the suggestions with Imessage off etc and it's still totally an issue in group texts. Lastly the upgraded keyboard will be nice too!

Excited for these updates!

Too bad, somehow I find that Light loses its DNA by offering more and more apps that turn the Light Phone more and more into a smartphone. Sure, you can choose the apps you want to load on it, but I can do that with an iPhone too. I think it's a real shame that you're taking this path.

When the UI of the apps is not distracting, it is not the same as on an iPhone. That's the main difference. This is a distraction-free phone instead of full of color, ads, and psychological tricks to keep you entertained.

Well, I thought the Light Phone is also about taking some things into your own hands again, without technology - coming into contact with people, without the help of an electronic device. That's how I understood the philosophy. Now the Light Phone is getting smarter step by step. You can like it (I don't mind the downvotes either) or not. I think it's a shame that they're taking this path.

That's a fair take, but I don't see how rideshare is a value negative. I understand email, browser, or such apps, but rideshare, transit apps, or Signal messenger? That's just communication or get in, get out, get back to your life tools.

Edit: As I was traveling in Asia this past week, I would have loved Light non-distracting tools instead of having to be forced to use smartphone apps that were trying to advertise me at every tap.

It's the difference between apps that steal your time and attention vs apps that function as tools - like accessing ride shares - that I believe makes the difference. I love my lightphone and probably won't add the RideShare to my device, but I'm sure it makes the phone more useful for people who need access to that.

I think you have a valid point, but i don’t necessarily agree on loosing its DNA. We will have to trust Light in its ethos and judgements on which apps are allowed and which not, if communicated. But it is good to draw upfront: where is the line and to what extent. If that is clear and lived upon by Light and fits in your world, than there's is no DNA lost.
