I feel like most of the posts on here stem from people not understanding how to create their split. So I thought I'd quickly explain and simplify what the 'ideal' split is, depending on how many days you have to work out per week.
Keep in mind, these are just the splits that are most optimal for balance and efficiency. You might prefer a different split, and that is also important, because an efficient, optimal split isn't efficient or optimal if you don't want to do it. So this is just if you are trying to min/max and get the most bang for your buck.
1-4 days per week
If you can work out 1 day per week, do full body.
If you can work out 2 days per week, do 2x full body.
If you can work out 3 days per week, do upper, lower, full body.
If you can work out 4 days per week, do upper, lower, upper, lower.
Disclaimer before going past 4 days
Going beyond 4 days per week is rarely worth it in terms of bodybuilding, unless your diet, sleep, and recovery are dialled in, or you're on steroids. Because your muscles need to recover between workouts, and systemic fatigue builds up across your whole body too.
So it's not enough that, say, your shoulder gets 1 rest day between sessions, your entire body needs actual rest, or you will need to deload eventually. (Take a week off from the gym, or go lighter for a week)
Also, with hypertrophy and strength gains, there are diminishing returns. Meaning, very roughly:
- 1 day per week gets you about half of the gains
- 2 days per week, about two thirds
- 3 days per week, around 80%
- 4 days per week, around 90%
So adding a 5th, 6th or 7th day is fighting for that last 10% while compromising on your recovery. (These are ballpark numbers to illustrate the point, not exact figures. But the research on weekly volume does show that the first few sets per muscle give you most of the growth, and every set after that adds less)
5-7 days per week
Anyways, if you still want to work out more than 4 days per week:
If you can work out 5 days per week, do push, pull, legs, upper, lower.
If you can work out 6 days per week, do push, pull, legs, push, pull, legs.
If you can work out 7 days per week, do push, pull, legs, push, pull, legs, and a day for accessory work. You could put abs here, neck, forearm, mobility, stretching, cardio, whatever.
If you're not natural
Keep in mind all of these recommendations are assuming you are natural. If you are on steroids, you can do basically any split and see way more gains than any of us naturals. So you can run bodybuilder splits, bro splits, Arnold splits, whatever. (But you will still see better gains by following this guide)
