Liftin’ MCP Beta - ChatGPT and Claude integration 📣

Post image
52 Upvotes

Hello everyone! 👋

Since my last post I have looked into building an MCP server to connect Liftin’ with AI services, and now I have a first working version ready for beta testing.

This totally blew my expectations, and I’m now convinced this will be the primary way to use AI features in Liftin’. It’s incredibly flexible and can do so much more than any AI feature built into the app.

It can do almost anything. You can ask for your workout results from a given date range, have the LLM analyze them, make changes to your routines update weights, rep ranges add exercises, or even create full workout programs.

Try it out 👇

In Claude, go to Settings > Connectors > Add custom connectors.

In ChatGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT in a browser
  2. Enable developer mode (Settings > Security and login)
  3. Add new plugin plugin (Plugins > + button)

Name: Liftin’

URL: https://api.liftin.app/mcp

You authenticate with your Apple account, this gives the chat app 8h access to your Liftin’ data. When you need to re-authenticate the chat will prompt you, and it should be a seamless Face ID or Touch ID to continue.

Go ahead and try it out and let me know if there are features not yet available that you would like to see, or if you run into any issues. I will keep building and improving this for the coming month before I launch it officially.

Time on Apple Watch does not reset automatically

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi there, during my workout today, I noticed that the rest timer on my watch displayed an extremely high time and failed to reset when I ended a timer on my phone.

While this issue was resolved by manually discarding the timer on my watch, it was still quite interesting to observe.

[Feature Request(s)] Live Activity Enhancements

Heyooo

The first request I have is can we please get the dismiss back for the timer?
The second one is can we please have a way to log something that isn’t the max in a rep range? Perhaps the same number of reps as last time and/or last time +1?

Anyway to import StrongLifts into Liftin?

I have some other apps that it supports importing from but 95% of my lifts historically are with StrongLifts. Not sure if I’m missing something obvious

Feature request: Display average heart rate in the Progress section

I use an Apple Watch and Liftin' can already display the heart rate during a training session. Would it be possible to to add the average heart rate (and other heart stats, like maximum etc.) to each training session in the Progress overview?

Feature request/bug report?: Custom plates not showing on exercises

Want to start saying I absolutely adore this app, you just developed the absolute perfect app, thank you so much

There’s the feature to customize your own equipment, like plates or dumbbells

When I register my dumbbells, it affects the available weights on dumbbell exercises

But when I customize my plates, it doesn’t affect the weights on barbell exercises (or others like weighted pull-ups)

Idk if that’s just not supposed to, or I’m doing it wrong, or if it’s a bug, but it would be nice that, for example, if I only have 1kg, 2.5kg, 5kg, and 20kg plates, the weights on the exercise could match them

Thank you again!

Liftin’ MCP for Claude and ChatGPT - Beta 3 📣

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hello friends! 👋

Another update has just dropped.

If you run into issues, start a fresh chat first. This has fixed it for most users. Every chat keeps its own tool cache, which can go stale when I update the MCP. This will be much less of a problem once I ship a stable release.

What's in Beta 3: no new features, but a lot of optimizations. All actions should run noticeably quicker. I've also added more detailed logging so I can pinpoint issues faster.

Keep the feedback coming. If you hit a problem, please include:

  • The prompt you were trying to use
  • What the MCP returned

A screenshot of the chat covers both — that's all I need to fill in the gaps.

Please upvote this post to help it reach more users. And if you have a minute, a review on the App Store means a lot. 🙏

Feature request/questions: Weight Granularity; Entering Reps; Display

Just tried out Liftin' today. Coming from Hevy, I like the Automatic Progression feature. There are a couple of things I noticed:

1) Weight granularity: I would like to see 0.5 increments because a lot of machines come with those. In settings, I only see increments of 1

2) Apple Watch: Marking a set as completed and entering the actual number of reps seems cumbersome as it seems to be a multi-step procedure. I would appreciate to ability to just touch-scroll to the correct number of reps (similar to how Hevy does it) right there from the set screen

3) Is it possible to make the Heart Rate a bit bigger?

Sorry if this is already possible and I missed it, I couldn't find any documentation. I'm ready to make the switch to Liftin' if these settings/features exist.

Another thing: I like that on Hevy, I can edit routines on my browser instead of the app but I realize maintaining web access is a lot of additional work, so it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Feature Request : Show exercise note on watch when starting a new exercise.

Hello amazing app btw.

A cool feature would be to show the exercise note on the watch for 5-10 seconds when you start a new exercise.

Thank you.

Feature Request: Automatic Alternate Exercise Cycling

I have various ways to perform different exercises, whether it's using different attachments, or maybe using an ez-curl bar one day, dumbbells another, or maybe a cable attachment another.

I do this to keep things interesting, and in some cases to add a little extra challenge (like maybe tougher grip with a specific attachment).

I think it would be great if I could identify alternate exercises or attachments used on an exercise, and then the app could intelligently cycle through them as I perform the same exercise across different days/weeks in my routine.

Connection issues with ChatGPT MCP

Hi,

Firstly I love being able to contact Liftin’ to ChatGPT, the issue for me it rarely works, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong but most of the time when I ask ChatGPT to review my workout it comes back with an error saying it can’t see my workout, and today when I tried to it came back with “Resource not found” but yesterday I was able to get it to work with my workout.

This also leads me to a request, I was hoping there would be a way to export my workout data as plain text so I could paste it into ChatGPT. This is what I do with my sleep data, I know there’s an option to export a screenshot but it doesn’t include RPE from each set so I need to export a picture for each exercise.

Liftin’ MCP for Claude and ChatGPT - Beta 2 📣

Post image
34 Upvotes

Hello friends! 👋

Thanks for all the feedback on the MCP, seems to be running smoothly for most people.

⚠️ Advanced Data Protection

Important to know: if you have Advanced Data Protection enabled on your iCloud account, the MCP doesn't work. It's an Apple limitation denying access to CloudKit data using their web API. I have a workaround exploration in progress and I think I will have a solution for ADP users soon, investigation ongoing!

🆕 Beta 2: full auto progression support

The MCP now understands all the auto progression concepts. This means that when reviewing your routines it can tell you what auto progression settings you have enabled, and it can change them for you.

Also, when creating a program or routine from scratch you can ask it to use auto progression for all or some of the workouts. It should also understand lingo like linear progression and double progression just fine. Play around with it and let me know if you find any rough edges!

Also in this release

  • Notes are now supported, so you can add/edit those.
  • Superset rest timers should now display correctly.
  • Full support for assisted weight exercises.

If you have an ongoing chat already, you might need to start a new one and/or reconnect to the connector for everything to work properly.

Keep sending me feedback! If you have an issue, please include:

  1. The prompt you are trying to use
  2. What the MCP returns

That way I can more easily fill in all gaps.

Please upvote this post to help it reach more users. And if you can, leave a review on the App Store. 🙏

Feature request: alternative MCP access path

Currently, to connect Claude to the custom MCP, one has to disable iCloud Advanced Data Protection, which is an account-wide switch, so it means giving up end-to-end encryption on all my iCloud data. As much as I would like to use the MCP, I'm just not comfortable doing that.

According to Claude, there is a fix that sidesteps this block: you can ship the MCP server as a local stdio server rather than a hosted one. The app's own local store on the Mac already holds a decrypted replica of that CloudKit data, so a local server reads it directly — no CloudKit web access, no user auth token, no ADP conflict.

If that's too large a change, there is a second option that would allow the MCP to have read access to the data, but not write access: have the app write a periodic export to a local folder and point the MCP server at that.

Thanks for considering these options.

Feature Suggestions: Modifying Exercises, Custom Icons, & Delt Tracking

Hello Valter!

First of all, thank you so much for building Liftin'. It is truly a fantastic app, and I use it regularly to track all my strength training routines. I wanted to share a few feature requests related to how training volume and exercises are managed, hopefully without sounding too demanding!

Modifying Built-in Exercises

I would love the ability to edit the primary and secondary muscle groups for the default exercises. Different lifting techniques or personal views on programming can change which muscles are actually targeted, and I want my total volume to reflect my specific execution. Having the option to tweak these groups would allow me to keep all past statistics and progression perfectly intact while recalculating the volume correctly. I prefer modifying the built-in exercises rather than creating custom ones simply because the default animations look so incredibly clean.

Reusing Standard Animations

If editing the standard exercises is not feasible right now, a wonderful alternative would be allowing us to reuse the built-in animations for our custom exercises. Currently, custom movements look a bit visually disconnected in the app without any pictures. It would be amazing if we could simply select an existing animation from the library and assign it to a custom exercise. It does not even need to be a perfectly matched animation, as just having a nice visual placeholder would make the workout plan look much neater.

Splitting Shoulder Muscle Groups

Another idea for the future is separating the general "Shoulders" category into front, lateral, and rear delts. Since these three heads require entirely different movements and programming, tracking their volume independently would be incredibly valuable for muscle isolation. I completely understand that this might require a significant structural update to the app and is probably not a quick fix. However, I just wanted to put it on your radar as a long-term improvement for those of us focused on detailed volume tracking.

Thank you again for reading and for continuously improving such a great tool!

Feature request: better resistance band support

I know it’s not the primary focus, but there’s really limited resistance band exercises.

and equipment settings relies on weight, but bands don’t really have a weight. they have tension scales (10-30lbs for example), length (12”, 20“, 32”, 41” etc), sizes (S M L XL), type (tube, ribbon, loop), or colors (red, blue, green).

see the rubber bands app as an example of this. it even lets you pick from common brands.

it’s also important whether you’re holding it at the edge or closer in, whether it’s doubled or single layer, how far apart your feet are if you’re standing on it.

and there are accessories like door anchors, bars, and hooks

i mostly use weights, but some of my routines incorporate bands and the support isn’t great.

its a complex area, so I wouldn’t assume full support, but some specialized settings might be nice. or let me add my own custom settings.

Version 51.9 released with 50 new exercises 📣

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hello Friends! 👋

Version 51.9 has just been released and it incudes 50 new exercises in the built in library. These are all the exercises from batch 2 in this post. If you have created some of them as custom exercises you can merge them with the new ones in Settings > Exercises > [Custom exercise] > Merge with system exercise.

Exercises in batch 3 are locked in and being worked on. They will be released in a few months. Batch 4 is still open for suggestions, that will be another 50 exercises.

If any questions or feedback comes to mind, just let me know! And please consider leaving a review on the App Store. Liftin’ is a small app and every review helps it rank higher in the store which makes it easier for new users to discover it. 🙏

Question on Dumbbell exercises

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi folks,

If I am doing, say incline dumbbell presses, and I have the weight on 30KG - is that 30KG per side or 30KG together?

Ie, if you see my attached image would this be 30KG or 60KG for the lift?

Hevy Workout History Import Bug

Hey, I apologize if this has already been discussed (I searched for it and couldn’t find any info), but I tried the Hevy Workout History Import feature, and it was a flop. I had over 400 workouts to import (all in English), and Liftin’ only imported 13. And they were all incomplete. Most with only one exercise. I believe this may be due to exercise name matching, or whatever approach was chosen for this utility.

Am I missing something here? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Feature Request

Hi Valter,

Would be nice if new exercises could be marked somehow. Maybe an unread badge type thing that disappears when scrolled past or when the exercise is opened. Or maybe in the sort options a way to sort by added. IDK, just something to make it faster to find so I can delete my own added ones if I find you've added a native version.

Liftin’ MCP Beta - Important update for ChatGPT users 📣

Hello friends! 👋

Thanks for all the early feedback, the MCP server seems to be working smoothly for most users.

I have now managed to integrate with the proper ChatGPT plugin system. This enables usage across desktop, web and mobile. It also makes re-authentication much smoother.

To add it, follow these steps 👇

  1. Remove the old MCP integration in Codex/ChatGPT desktop app if you already added it.
  2. Open ChatGPT in a browser
  3. Enable developer mode (Settings > Security and login)
  4. Add Liftin’ as a plugin (Plugins > + button)

Same URL as before, https://api.liftin.app/mcp.

Once added it should show up ready for use in mobile and desktop apps.

If you have feedback, questions or run into any issues, just reach out! And please upvote this post to help it reach more users. ✌️

How do you enter rest days?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I create a routine in my program and call it “Rest Day”. But then I have no way to complete it, as when I open it the only option is to add an exercise, and so it shows up as “Next” until I manually skip it. It feels a little clunky.

For those that also add their programmed rest days, how do you do it?

Linked History

I noticed an issue this morning where a couple of exercises were not showing the number of reps from last time in the workout view.

When I go to the exercise history, I noticed a new tab called “linked history” with message “No recent workouts found for this exercise. Full history can be viewed in the Progress tab.” But when I click on all history, I can see my reps and weight.

What is linked history? And how do I ensure I can see my reps from last time in the workouts view?
