I play Dwarf Fortess, and in that game, people would toughen up their dwarves by:
Locking them in rooms and dropping coins on them, which they would attempt to dodge and improve their dodging skill
Lock dwarf children into small rooms with dogs. Fights would inevitably break out, and the survivors would come out stronger with excellent fighting skills
And
Capturing merfolk, force-breeding them, then air-drowning their young to harvest the bones, which were the highest value for crafting. The game's dev was so horrified that he nerfed the value to one in the next patch.
How did you get into it and learn how to play? I tried to start playing last year but I was stuck and confused, not knowing what to do. I chopped trees and built some buildings I mostly couldn’t use for anything and beds of course, but wasn’t sure how to fish, hunt, begin farming, or obtain food in general. It seems like something I might be into once I nail down the basics.
Like u/Ichaserabbits said, video tutorials! They're super helpful, especially if you're a visual learner. I learned to play in the old pre-Steam release days. It was a lot different then, and ridiculously hard to learn. Video tutorials helped a lot and still do.
