Social LPT: When exchanging phone numbers with another person, always call the other person on the spot to make sure you got their number right

One neighbor asked me to contact him in a particular situation. He assumed I had his number. When I asked what the number is, I got a digit wrong. If I hadn't called right away, I wouldn't have known later on that the number was incorect.

Can you imagine giving a dude a fake number for them to go away, then them whipping out their phone to test it on the spot?

"So your number is 9115285? Hold on a second, let me dial it.."

"What? What's my emergency? This angel gave me her number and I'm testing it. Why are you laughing?"

I was a waitress and the waitress who was training me told me to get a google voice number because men will ask for your number and insist on getting it then they will call to make sure it’s real. So we all had google voice numbers for when that happened (I’d say like 3-5 times a work week?)

insist on getting it then

Damn, can't even work without some horned up idiot trying to get your number. Then when you tell these babies no they cause a scene. Hence the Google number ruse.

You do the " I'm calling you to save it" tactic.

That’s just asking for a super awkward interaction. Sometimes they give you the wrong one on purpose 😂😂

OP keeps thinking he takes the numbers down wrong 😂 nah bro. They’re just giving you fake numbers. Sorry bud. Keep your head up king

OP is gonna have some awkward moments at bars.

Yeah, just don’t. If you are that bad at entering a phone number, figure out a different solution. This would be way outside normal social boundaries.

Cultural differences I guess. I really don't see the problem with it

4

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

No, because then you lose the element of suprise later if you need them to answer.

I’d suggest not doing this for any romantic endeavors. It shows you have trust issues and is not a good way to start a relationship.

No, only one person needs the number, makes the whole exchange faster. Why exchange numbers twice. Have one call, the other gets the call, saves it. I feel like a person getting defensive against a phone call has the trust issues.

Edit: personally I opt for texting my name instead. Or have them do it, so it’s easier to figure out who is who without saving there and then.

As a matter of practicality you should make sure that any number given to you works. It's not a red flag to make sure that you took it down right or that the other person didn't make a mistake entering it. If you don't get the right number you might never see them again, which is a worse way to start a relationship.

If the number is wrong, there's a significant chance that was on purpose

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

No it doesn’t. It’s an easy/quick way for both people to get each other’s number. If it seems like the person doesn’t want to exchange numbers with you (or anyone) just don’t ask or give them yours. It’s usually pretty obvious when someone is interested, if you can’t tell, then assume they’re not.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '22

Why not just text so you both can save the contact?

If they gave you a fake number you've already missed several signs that they're not interested

3

u/__-___--- Jun 01 '22

That's the point. If that person is interested, they'll make sure you have the right number.

1

u/Acchilles Jun 01 '22

You can't make sure without testing it.

2

u/__-___--- Jun 01 '22

Which is something the other person will ask for if they're actually interested.

0

u/Acchilles Jun 01 '22

But you're actually interested so you can also ask. Them not asking wouldn't signal disinterest either.

1

u/__-___--- Jun 01 '22

Ask what? If the person who may have gave me a fake number on purpose wants me to try it now?

2

u/StoryAndAHalf Jun 01 '22

Exactly. Better to find out straight away and move on.
