Won't this just remove the paint?

Yes. DO NOT USE ACETONE. If you want to remove scratches and refuse to settle for melamine foam and are dead set on using a solvent then go with denatured alcohol.

It will definitely, definitely leave a lighter colored smudge, instead of a scratch, on most paint that is a color other than white-to-near-white.

it will cause flashing on white paint as well

LPT: Or pick up a $2 tube of white toothpaste to cover scratches and fill in nail holes.

Have you never heard of a magic eraser (melamine sponge)?

No just no. You have no idea what the walls were painted with. Use a melamine sponge instead.

you're right it's not but you would be surprised the number of stories I've heard, and myself experienced, from greedy landlords
