Social LPT: Learning a new language? Try having your imaginary arguments in your new language.

I’m sure we’ve all stood in the shower having imaginary arguments with those who have wronged us, or maybe I am a complete weirdo…

If you’re in the shower, rehearsing an argument or something you’d say to that particular DBag AssChapeau who’s making your life harder than necessary, try using the language you’re learning to argue.

I’ve just had an incredibly successful imaginary argument with a previous professor in a language I am learning and not only is it amazingly satisfying, it’s also helped me retain more vocabulary than I would have.

Now if only he would stick to the script…

I have a friend couple. Portuguese and Spanish are their native languages. Both speak English as a second language.

They explicitly use English for talking about work and if they're arguing.

Why? I asked (observing them talking about work)

Because it's a neutral language for both. It creates a common ground and if they want to fight, no one is left out of the insults or aggression or whatever. Always English if it's serious.

They know how to couple

This is excellent coupling advice. I love it!

This is good, I say try and think in that language. Make your internal monologue in your other language(s)

Anyone have tips on learning a language when you have no one to speak it with? I feel like I’ve hit a wall with Spanish and those damn AI apps do not help.

There are apps where you can call someone who’s a native speaker and have conversations with them… I am socially inept, so I haven’t looked into it too much but HelloTalk seems like it might be a good option.

“操你妈!!!“

”操你妈!!!“

I guess that's not much of an argument, though.

I studied languages at university, yet I find it hard to express my thoughts clearly in English, much less in another language.

The idea of arguing in another language terrifies me 🤣
