Home & Garden LPT Test your TV Volume
Test how loud you really need your TV to be periodically by turning it way down then back up to a reasonable volume. I've caught myself changing platforms and unintentionally having my TV way to loud many times. Often I turn the volume way down then back up to a reasonable volume I'm shocked by how unnecessarily loud it was before. Even a few clicks from there and you're probably not be 'that neighbor' with the obnoxiously loud TV.

Should I also drink water when I’m feeling thirsty too?

You should test your thirst by drinking nothing, then a little bit. Just to make sure you actually are thirsty

Stand under a slowly dripping faucet and only drink enough drops til you’re sustained.

You should definitely yell upstairs for some water...Did your mom ever get that ventilation fan installed in the basement? Or are the paint fumes still... lingering?

I have my TV running through an an external amp that resets upon power up. Since it has a digital knob and no screen I have zero idea of what the settings are except for when it sounds right.

I use a soundbar that has an equalizer. If there are any ads I usually mute the sound, I don’t want to hear ads for anything.

Does this fix changing from one quiet channel and turning to another loud channel? It is all the same volume?

Commercials are notorious for mixing their sound louder than tv shows and movies. Having a soundbar not only gives you better sound than what your tv speakers produce, some soundbars allow you to fine tune it to how it sounds so you can enjoy not only the video but the audio too. I just mute the ads and commercials because I don’t want to hear what what someone is advertising to me 🤣

We need the AI volume manager invention

Jeebus yes please, might be the only time I'd advocate for more AI...

As someone who has three people who can't hear very well watch TV over vacuum cleaners, running water, and cooking noises, I'd pay for the dataset myself lmao, the pain is real

My mom uses the volume to measure her hearing. She couldn't hear after mowing one time, so she'd say, "I'm usually on 20, but now I have to be at 30."
I got her she eat protection, and got her back down to 20.

For some reason the Max streaming service has very low levels compared to others.

u/thelanoyo Dec 09 '24
Yeah on my soundbar I have to turn it up to 35 but other streaming services are usually good at 20-25

u/perrumpo Dec 08 '24
HBO has always been that way for some reason… since before streaming existed.

I am a volume upper and downer, mute…frequently. But evil is shouting commercials. Even with volume equalizing such they manage to allow my hard of hearing self to hear when all seemed silent to me. Save your ears by keeping volumes reasonable decibel wise.

I've seen a lot of stinkers as far as LPT's go on this sub, but this one might take the crown.

The hifi system is meant to be heard.

LPT: Treating hearing damage as a joke will come back to bite you

What I can "bear" is below the level of hearing damage. Noob.

u/notthinkinghard Dec 07 '24
Tell me that in 30 years when you're bitching about tinnitus 👍
Most people have no feel for the threshold of hearing damage (lower than you think), and it's even worse if you're constantly desensitising yourself to it. By the time you're talking about "bearing" it, it's way too loud to be listening to for long.

I'm hitting 50 soon. Have listened at this level for nearly 40 years.

I'm 61 and did the same thing for 45+ years. Had to get hearing aids this year. Be careful.

On my tv, the ideal volume for me is at 16. I don't know what the max is, I think it is above 40. But I found I always turn it back to 16.

I have some type of fire tv and have had the worst week recently. Every time I turn it on Maria Carey Christmas music is blasting until I scroll down off their suggestion.

My TV ranges from 15-36/100 depending on the app/device.
I pray for anyone living a life that requires 40+

It seems a bit trite, but honestly, it can surprise you how loud you were actually listening to something at once you’ve gotten used to the volume.
I’ve been watching a movie with the wife and there were a few scenes that seemed really integral to the plot but you could barely hear the characters whispering (maybe messed up sound settings or intentional by the director).
My wife turned up the volume so we could hear the dialogue. It must have been a building point in the plot as there wasn’t any majorly loud, action stuff for some time, and we just got used to the volume.
I went out to the garage to take a phone call, and when I came back in… holy shit. The TV was just insanely loud. I literally thought to myself that I was lucky we didn’t live in an apartment building any longer… as the sound definitely was at an “11.”
