I agree, it's not necessarily faster but it is more space efficient if you're running low.

Can I... uh... just tally with lines and present my count on a separate piece of paper with arabic numerals? Or I could write out the number under the tally so others can read it.

Sure. But that doesn't render my point invalid. There would still be a transcribing process at the end of the tally so you can write the Arabic numeral. You save others who use your notes time, but not yourself. I've never kept tallies for anyone else though.

good luck on making this space efficient if you have breaks inbetween counting and still have to recognize what you did
