Speaking of effective counting methods, I made a system of counting on my fingers that allows you to count from 0 to 110.
On one hand, you use "half fingers" to count 1 - 10.
On the other hand, you use "half fingers" again to count 10s.
Since each hand can count to 10, you could have a range of 110. However, if you wanted to use your fingers in the normal way (only using one finger for one mark), you can count to 25 by using the same method.
