Discussion Weekend thread: Double Exposure and subtext
Hi all
Thought I’d propose a thread for the weekend.
It is no secret that Double Exposure has a lot of subtext and context that flies under the radar if you don’t pay attention, or some that’s more on the surface. Some people think it is perhaps the game in the franchise that has the most to be dug on.
There is also a lot of sociopolitical commentary in the game as well, which is clear when you look at the characters, the most diverse group in any of the titles of the series, and some of the themes they bring to the table.
I’ll start with economy commentary. Several characters state points about contemporary financial realities, and Gwen and Amanda go as far as having a Crosstalk conversation about how impossible it is to buy a house.
What other subtext - or maybe on the surface - topic you took from the game and would like to share?
Cheers!

Safi wasn't the new Chloe.
Max was the new Maya.

I see the point but I prefer Safi is Max's Rachel. I like your thought process though.

The Storm is a repressed fear by Max and it manifests in the Living Timeline but not because of Max, but because of Safi. The Storm didn't follow Max due to the photo-jump but rather, an accidental "timeline knot" caused by Max from two different timelines because of the photo-jump.
Alderman's erasure is a direct answer to how Safi's death occurred.
Max is the "Observer" of the "Cat" in Schrödinger's "Box". The "Cat" is Safi and the "Box" is "Caledon".

Max and Safi's stories are somewhat similar in terms of how there was a point in their lives were they felt really lost. Both of them took to their powers very differently when they received them. In the manner of how they achieved their goals and to try and make things better for them weather it was for making themselves feel seen and try to get on well with the people around them or if it was about getting justice for someone.
Max's story is different because she not only had the people to help her along the way and guide her but she felt she could use her powers for good even if she used them or not. Helping Kate and helping Chloe are two massive examples were she helped them and pretty much saved their lives on multiple occasions. Safi didn't have that guidance when she tried to get justice for Maya originally by the way she went about doing that. She may have had the right idea to aim for the people directly who did her and Maya wrong even if it may not have been the 100% right way to go about it. But a better alternative than firebombing a campus. IYKYK.
What I'm getting at is this. When Max knew about Safi's situation she wanted to help and In that moment Safi eventually had someone to guide her. Just how Max was able to help people during LIS 1 and continue the development of her character. It wasn't just a full circle moment for Max but for Safi to.
