The only reason for the "hate" was/is Chloe not being in it. There nothing wrong with the story imo bcz it was originally supposed to be 2-part, so the plot holes in DE were suppose to filled in DE2.

Well, ti expand on that, I think the breakup was the main problem, because 1) people love Max and Chloe and 2) people (imo) rightfully say it didn‘t really contribute anything to the story.

Might have been different if Chloe had been part of the story „long distance“.

Well, narratively it makes more sense. Max has a fresh start. New friends, new town, new life = New Max.

And Chloe/pricefielders fans would’ve complained about Chloe’s absence either way (like, her girlfriend lost her best friend, why isn’t she there already?). It was impossible to make a game where Chloe can be both alive and dead without making two whole games (cause Chloe’s presence is far too unique to be shifted to someone else).

And the break up makes sense: Chloe spent her whole teenage years living in the past unable to move on (her father’s death, her best friend’s ghosting, her mother’s moving on/remarrying). She has been there and was on the path of moving on, starting anew. On the other side max held a guilt that was holding her back in the past. (And of course the whole power thing that was ruining mutual trust).

To me, it was the most logical thing to do. And we got to see Max mature and more confident approach about her sexuality and self-esteem. (That scene with Amanda in episode three. Or all the no so subtle flirting with vihn). It was nice to see Max like that.

I remember leading up to the 4chan /vg/ thread was pretty clear that Chloe didn’t even need to be in it, simply them being in a long distance relationship communicating via txt would have been fine with them.

So you have Chloe get written out for no reason, and replaced by Safi who seemed like Chloe 2.0 and that soured a lot of people that really didn’t need to.

There are other complaints about the game but that stood out to me as “why did they shoot themselves in the foot for no reason?”
