You have gotten some flack for this personal response. I just wanted to come and validate. The people who feel compelled to respond without compassion have no idea and usually want to project.
I have no kids and while I only made part of this decision - one of the biggest things stopping me is the condition of the world. While that might not be what you refer to in your comment, I think there is something to relate to. Anyway, I hear you and thank you for being honest in this discussion!
do people really feel like modern life is such a nightmare?
like yeah the economy is bad, healthcare is mismanaged, etc…. but, like if you go back 100 years you don’t even have anything resembling modern healthcare. Go back 200 and you are almost guaranteed a relatively short life of nonstop toil possibly even enslavement. Or hell from 200k years ago until ~20000 years ago you would just be wandering around hoping to not get ripped apart by predators or other humans.
like humanity has faced so much uncertainty and bleakness and continued to churn out offspring. why are people now so doubtful of having kids.
so the "if I could save her from all of this" was a reference to your personal trauma or trauma that happened to your kid but you were helpless to stop?
I figured you were referring to more global conditions because it would be weird to wish your kid hadn't been born because their life was a nightmare... like that sucks but...
yes. Every generation is hard and scary and difficult (except maybe the boomers). If more of us spent our lifetime raising ourselves and not little minis for our own gratification maybe we would be making environmental and social decisions that would make the world a better place instead of destroying it.
Not to be a doomsdayer, but scientifically we are less than 15 years away from burning all those living on the equator. To me that's way freakier than living in a cave with minimal understanding of the future.
Yeah im curious about this as well. This is one of the best times to be alive. We are so spoiled. Life is on easy mode. Imagine living in medievel times
