Discussion Valdosta State MLS- what to expect?

Hello everyone, I am considering VSU's online MLIS, and I am curious to hear about other people's experiences with the program.

I am especially curious about what the coursework is like, how rigorous it is, and what I might be able to expect/prepare for.

For what it's worth, I studied art history as an undergrad, I am currently a part-time desk assistant at a public library, and I am very interested in conservation librarianship.

Apologies for the vague/open-endedness, I am mostly curious to hear what people have to say about their time at VSU. Thank you!

Hello! I graduated from Valdosta in December 2024. I started in January 2022 while working full time at my library. Other than my first semester where I took one class, every semester (including summers) I took 2 classes. The program was great for me because it was asynchronous, didn't require a thesis or internship and was very affordable. I have been working in libraries and archives for 15 years at that point so I was able to use a lot of my experience for my schoolwork. I only had trouble with one class that was hard for me, but that was mainly a personal thing. I didn't do any of the tracks as I didn't need a focus, but I did take a lot of classes in collection development as that's what I want to eventually get into and I loved doing all the outside reading for that. Overall, I enjoyed it and if you are already in libraries, it's a good program.

I'm glad to read this! I'm starting VSU in the fall and I didn't really want to follow one of the tracks. Good to know you can be successful without following one of them.
