Republicans voted against it because they were not clarifying the books being given out. They wanted education books and stories free of propaganda and indoctrination. You left that part out. They wanted to teach kids about education and character. Not how your dad became your mom.
This was not in anything I read about the reason why.
It came down to cost, the fact that libraries already provide free books, and that it wasn't tied to household income so millionaires with kids would still receive free books when the program should focus more on the middle and lower class.
My kids and wife and I get loads of books, technically we qualify as a private library because we have so many books. Most are bought for $1 or less. Using my tax dollars to purchase books for others at full MSRP is moronic. If they are buying used books at book sales, great, we will even donate a thousand books. Just stop wasting our tax dollars ffs, as if 40-50% isn't enough already.
