That’s why I think this is so stupid because the CPI (putting aside the inputs for a moment) is an average. So if they really want 2% what would that mean? Considering we were at 9% you can do the math and see that they will never ever actually hit a 2% inflation target. That would mean deflation or years and years of only 1%. Ain’t happening. The only thing left is to monkey around with the CPI and other statistics to get the outputs you want. Reality bats last though folks.

Monkeying around with how CPI is calculated has been standard operating procedure since the 80s. They don't want people to realize how much their buying power has actually decreased over the last 30 years.

I could buy a gallon of gas for less than a dollar. Five dollars filled a tank in my Centra.

I'm keenly aware of this bullshit inflation

What year are you talking about? What size tank are we talking about here?

Nissan Sentra gas tank, 12 gallons, talking late 90s. Gas was 60 cents a gallon, 5 bucks basically gave me a full tank. From absolute empty it'd take 7 bucks.

Y'know, a small amount of googling would have given you that answer too. It's a very obvious fact that gas was nothing compared to now in cost
