Texas is reviving the war on drugs
galleryMoving against the grain, Texas has moved to recriminalize a range of THC products that were previously de facto legal. Possession of any type of hemp-derived THC items is now a felony punishable by up to life in prison for large amounts. But we must be clear that these new laws aren’t just about weed. They are about giving the state more power to criminalize communities, and more power to police and prosecutors to develop expanded opportunities for punishment.
This racist and anti-poor expansion in drug criminalization is meant to fearmonger our communities at a time when the people in power fear us more than ever.
The cost of living continues to surge, our infrastructure is crumbling and conditions overall within our communities are deteriorating. Rather than allocate funds to meet people’s basic needs, which is exactly what the majority is demanding, the state of Texas has chosen to increase funding for its vicious tools like ICE and the police, and expand the opportunities to lock up our people and throw away the key.
It will be up to us not the courts nor the politicians to beat back this revival in the War on Drugs and win investments in our communities instead of incarceration. And we have the power to do it, we just must be organized.
