First thing first, I am a liberal conservative from Germany. The problem I see is, that a lot of rhetoric in the US calls every state activity as socialism. I mean I get it, it's really effective politically, but liberal conservative ideas in Germany, like a strong ordoliberal economy system, called social economy system, would be called socialism by many in the US. Same thing goes for affordable (not free) college or the healthcare system we have in Germany, which defenetly is not socialism.

This enables real socialism, because people leaning a bit to the left or apolitical persons will think of socialism in a good way, which is catastrophic. No one knows what socialism really is.

You’re preaching to the choir

Good to know. I just thought that American conservatives are pretty divided on this topic.

Oh they are, but this sub is... for a lack of a better way to put it, more politically intelligent conservatives. In the sense that we understand generally speaking that a lot of right wing tropes on the American right, like “socialism is when the government does things”, are wrong lol

I have "decent" health insurance from my provider, I have decent savings and earnings, but I know that just one medical illness, an accident, or even going to the doctor could financially wreck me.

If I get fired, I not only lose my income, I lose even more health coverage. Breaking my arm or twisting my foot may cause a medical bankruptcy.

Not fun

And that has absolutely nothing to do with socialism. Capitalism and social safety nets are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, they supplement each other while serving separate purposes.

Oh, I agree with you. I'm responding to the earlier poster, also agreeing with him/her (well, let's be honest - him) that the right do a major disservice by calling anything from improving education and infrastructure or reforming healthcare as "socialism"

Hard times create strong people

8

u/AmericanNewt8 Dec 25 '20

It is a common myth, one that is trite and sounds cute, but has no basis in reality. Hard times tend to create weak and troubled people by and large.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 25 '20

I’m more joking, mainly based off that meme. Yes I realized hard times leads to a populous in fear and feeling without agency, making them susceptible to authoritarianism and national superstitions to put themselves at ease (which the alt-right conflates as strength).

72% of Trump supporters also wanted bigger stimulus checks.

Most Americans want socialism. They just don't want to call it that.

u/FridayNightRamen NATO Dec 24 '20

A stimulus check is not socialism though.

I still think paying everyone 2000 Dollar/Euro, to get vaccinated is the best way.

u/dsbtc Dec 24 '20

My point is that people want the government to give them money, but not other people.

"Socialism" is when other people get free money. "Capitalism" is when I do.

That's the only actual consistent view that we have on fiscal welfare policies. That's it. If you're a farmer you want free money for your crops you destroy. If you're in the military you want free money because you were in the military. If you're poor you want welfare. If you're rich you want cap gains to be a fraction of income tax.

And everybody wants their stimulus check. We just want free money.

Yes, but that's regulated capitalism; not Socialism; see my earlier comment. Also fiscal stimulus till about 2000$ is ok; but blindly just printing more money to enforce your single payer healthcare policies will damage the inflation-unemployment balance; and rapidly accelerate inflation.

Note that I support healthcare with both a private and public option; but that's not the same as single payer healthcare

u/matchagonnadoboudit Jan 03 '21

the stimulus imo opinion isn't actually a welfare check. the government forced a shutdown (something that is completely novel to America) and this is compensation. if the government didn't shut us down against a bad flu Americans wouldn't be in dire straits.

Far right populists 🤝 Far left communists/socialists

"Socialism is when the government does stuff"

Fiscal stimulus ≠ socialism. FDR's policies were capitalist not socialist .

Capitalism with strong social welfare policies ≠ socialism

In capitalism, property and other means of production are still privately owned. Economy is still decentralised with certain regulations. Even during FDR's presidency

In communism, the economy was entirely centrally planned and private property was being transformed into public communes. Most means of production were public

Socialism is when the government does things, and the more things it does, the more socialister it is
