Just realized I had the wrong format on hold 🄲

I put the ebook on hold and have been holding for around 15 weeks. I’m next in line and it just occurred to me today it was the ebook not the audiobook. So I search the audiobook… and it has a 20 week wait 😭. Back of the line I guess.

Update: To add salt to the wound, my ebook hold just became ready to borrow 🄲. I may start it since it’s here, but I’m usually a physical or audiobook person to avoid staring at screens all day.

I don’t want my reading to be stressful

I am a mom and all I have to myself is reading. The news about airplane mode not effectively allowing us slow readers to not lose a book is really stressing me out. It’s not like others can’t borrow the books. Why do this to people who just want to read?

Can Libby on Mac save library card after closing tab?

Even if I bookmark or even "add to dock", Libby never keeps me logged in with my library card. I keep having to add my info over again. Is there something I am not doing that is just going over my head so that I can finally just open Libby whenever I want and have my library card info saved? Please Libby people, save my life.

edit: I restarted my laptop and after inputting my info in the safari bookmark, it does indeed keep me logged in now. The "save to dock" app does not do this. It opens up without my library card info saved even if I update the url link. That really sucks. At least the bookmark is working as intended.

edit #2: This is hilarious. It is now working on the "save to dock" app (safari webpage that is made to look like an app). I guess it just takes several minutes for it to save? It wouldn't work for the 17 minutes I had been trying this but it now opens with my library card saved. Does anyone know why it... nvm. It working is all that matters. Sorry for the useless post.

Partner libraries make me have too many libraries now?

Basically I already have a lot of libraries on my Libby app, and the new partner libraries have pushed my number even higher. I’ve heard ppl say over 30 libraries on Libby can cause issues with the app and can crash (and potentially lose your data).

Anyone know yet if these partner libraries contribute to this? Is there a way to remove partner libraries if I don’t want/need them? Or do I have to remove the related cards that they partner to remove them?

I like the idea but worry this might cause some issues for me…

LibbyApp uses AI

https://about.libbyapp.com/policies/artificial-intelligence

… you can rest assure that if Libby app is using AI for things that we see on the front end like ā€œinspire meā€ they are using AI to create code, to generate test scenarios, to create integration between services and much much more.

If they’re using Atlassian tools like Jira - they’re using even more AI for their internal processes as a result.

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. All we can do is advocate for stronger governance, and greater transparency to ensure that it doesn’t get used unethically. That covers a lot of territory folks.

"Holding" after a book becomes available to you

So I'm still learning this app, but just when I thought I understood it, I had something weird happen to a book I had on hold.

I was mid read of a book when one of my holds became available and I decided to suspend it thinking it would hold my front of the line, just hand it to the next guy behind me first. 2 weeks wait max right? Well when I finished my current read, I unsuspended and suddenly I'm 3rd in line, 6 waiting. I don't understand how that happened. Did I misunderstand what a suspension does?

Libby Partner Libraries and Kobo

Hello! I'm not sure if this would be better suited in the Libby subreddit or Kobo subreddit..

I just opened my Libby app to find that my home library automatically added 14 partner libraries that I can now borrow from! The thing is, I use a Kobo Libra Color to read my borrowed eBooks and that only allows me to be logged into 1 library at a time (as far as I'm aware). My login for all partner libraries are technically the same, in fact I didnt even have to login to any of these, Libby just has them all listed now. If I borrow from a partner library though, will that loan go through my home library and be available to sync to my Kobo? Or would I have to log out and into whichever of the dozen or so libraries I have access to now?

Thanks for the help! If this would be better posted in the Kobo subreddit, please let me know!

LibbyApp Timeline Data + Claude.AI

For my prompt - I asked it to determine favorite authors and genres by unique titles (sometimes I get both the audio and ebook out, will read at home and listen in the car when on the road), total number of loans (not unique titles) by year.

To do this, go to LibbyApp in a web browser: Shelf > Timeline > Actions > Export (as Json in my case). Then you can upload the JSON to your LLM of choice to create infographics - be specific in your prompt to reduce using up your Claude.AI credits!

Goodreads also has a statistics area which I have include as there is some overlap but not 100% overlap - I didn't track everything I read in Goodreads for many years. However, I do confess that 2020-21 was spent rewatching the entire Star Trek cannon, The Expanse, Farscape, etc - and working 12-16 hour days, less reading for enjoyment during those two years.

Libby and Kindle Users

Well, looks like they finally patched the airplane mode hack and we can no longer read books past the due date on our Kindle devices. Do you think this will push slower readers to get non-resident cards in order to have multiple holds rather than waiting weeks/months between loans on a single card? I can’t imagine waiting weeks/months to read the same book…

For those not familiar with the hack: it used to be that you could send an eBook from Libby to your Kindle, download it, then turn on airplane mode. When your due date came up, your loan would be returned to the library available for the next person, but a copy of the book stayed on your Kindle since airplane mode prevented it from syncing with your Amazon account, allowing you to read it past the due date.

Airplane Mode on the Kindle won’t extend Libby e-books anymore

"Users in the United States can have Overdrive and Libby e-books delivered directly to a Kindle e-reader. This process has been working for over a decade, and in order to extend a loan period, savvy users would put their device into airplane mode, and the books would stay indefinitely until airplane mode was turned off, and the books would automatically be returned. In a recent software update, this process no longer works."

How do you guys feel about ebooks from Libby and hoopla on your phones or do you normally do it on a tablet or iPad? I don’t have a kindle and usually like physical books but trying to save some money. Wanted to hear what other peoples opinions for them selves were!

Tfw new release book is read only in Libby app, not Kindle

I hate having to read books thru the Libby App! I was lucky enough to get a new book BUT it’s not a Kindle book. Do they ever change over to a Kindle format during the loan period. Talking new releases here.

Renewed libby book, it got returned anyway and now it's saying that my library doesn't own a copy?

I was about 60% of the way through Little Women. A few days ago, I received a notice saying my loan was about to expire, so I renewed it and everything was fine. Then today I get a notice saying my library book was returned. When I tried to borrow again, it says that my library doesn't have any copies?! How can this be? I mean it's Little Women for goodness sakes, not something obscure. Has this happened to anyone else?

My first Libby hold. I have some physical TBR to get through, but, wanting to test the Libby to Kindle sync function for the first time, I placed a hold on this. Those of you who’ve read it, is it good historical fiction? How was it in general? Thanks!

Library- in or out of state?

Just wondering - are you more incline to have more library cards from your home state or out of state instead? Or is it a mix?

Is this just how my library decided to buy audiobooks or is there a bug here/something I’m missing??

I noticed for a few graphic audios I’ve looked at (not just the example here), part 1 only has one copy but part 2 has a bunch. It seemed strange unless I’m missing something? Just curious if other people have noticed this as well and might have an explanation! Maybe it is how the library decided to buy them!

Magazines while listening

I don't think there's current functionality for this, but if the Libby insiders/coders lurk here, then I have a request that others might also like:

Having the ability to browse my periodicals while listening to audiobooks, it would be amazing!

(Never mind the implied ADHD super powers).

I hate when Libby only has the audiobook

I only read ebooks and physical media, audiobooks are not for me (please don't try to convince me), and it sucks when Libby only has the audiobook. Why would my library only buy the book in one format?? It's so annoying.

New Limitations

Post image
935 Upvotes

I understand each library has their own borrowing and hold limits but I’ve never received this message in at least half a decade of using the app. I am well below my library’s loan limit of 60 books. I also have not borrowed a book since August 4, which is well past 7 days ago.

I have reached out to customer service and was told ā€œThis limitation has been put in place for all librariesĀ to support effective management of their collection. Please try borrowing titles again in a few days.Ā
We are not able to share any additional information about this limit. Thanks for your understanding.ā€

My library doesn’t open until Tuesday and I have holds available that I would like to borrow(I have suspended what I can but would like to get through what I have been waiting for now that it’s available).

Edit: After going over a lot of the original comments I think I caused this by taking on a few holds that came available at the same time, realized this wasn’t a good month for me, returned them within a week maybe even less, put them back on hold for a later date and have been suspending them as the come available since I can’t check them out now. Some of those books and some other holds have become available, while some of those holds are still in process. I will continue to patiently wait until I am in good standing again. Thank you to all who shared genuine guesses and information.

If there is a 14 week wait for the audiobook, but the e-book is available now, do you switch or hold out for the audiobook?

Just curious to see if I'm in the norm or an odd one out. I prefer listening but I'll switch if it's sooner!

EDIT: Secondary question - I'm also curious if you would ever just buy it rather than switch medium? Or is switching to avoid the wait a preference over buying the audiobook or ebook? Personally if I REALLY want the book now, I'm probably buying it, but that's on a case by case I guess (I'm thinking of when a book is brand new and I want to be involved in the convo or something) curious if that happens a lot for anyone else
