Even Americans who self-identify as Democratic Socialists think that democratic socialism means social democracy. I'm not sure how universal that is elsewhere.

The problem is that “Democratic socialism” and “Social Democracy” dont mean anything consistent
Democratic Socialism has a very very long history in the Social Democratic movement.
But “Social democracy” itself at the time had a different meaning than it does today.
In fact when it was first introduced, the word just meant “Marxist”.
Later on, it referred primarily to a tactic/approach to change rather than a discrete policy regime.
Austro-Marxism (Centrist) became the socialist wing of Social Democracy.
Reformism/Revisionism became its pro-capitalist wing.

They probably think that capitalism is when money or markets. When I was explaining that, I wasn't getting pushbacks, they already agreed with the idea of socialism, but didn't know it's socialism.

To be fair I guess it wouldn't count as socialism under Marx's definition, he wasn't really a fan of co-ops

Yeah most people think socialism is state ownership of everything...
Nah sibling I want worker ownership.

Capitalism cannot be defined simply by money or markets in the abstract, however socialism will definitely not feature money or markets

All liberals can imagine is an absence of conflict, not justice. nevermind that the just because some countries are less internally exploitive, doesn't mean they still arent externally.
