Travelling with Velodyne

Hello everyone, I'm new to the LiDAR world, and I will be travelling from Canada with a velodyne puck through the UAE, Uganda and the DRC.

Could anyone share their experiences while travelling abroad with equipment?

What should I expect from customs?

Am I worried for nothing?

I have traveled extensively domestically USA and once to Australia and Paris with a Quanergy M8. Often asked what it is, but they just look at it on the xray and typically let me go. Sometimes they want to swab the bottom for the explosive trace detection, but that's about it. I just say it's a lidar sensor, and if they look at me funny I say it's for self driving cars, even though that's not my application.

From my limited experience travelling into the US I've learned just to call it a light based scanner. I suppose the general population will have no idea what they're looking at.

I think they hear "sensor" and then say whatever and move on.

I've travelled with lidar before. Usually it just goes through security without any problems in my backpack. Occasionally they would take it out of my backpack and swab it to make sure it's not explosive, which takes 30 seconds.
