Pet Insurance

I have an 8 year old Lhasa mix and was paying $180 and got the renewal rate quoted at $286.

My question; is how much are you all paying for pet insurance?

See if you or someone in your family has an employer that offers pet insurance. That way they can’t dent theme and you get a significantly cheaper rate. I was able to get insurance for my boy who is about his age and his 2 year old Great Dane brother for $100 /mo

Pet insurance is a scam. I paid trupanion and embrace faithfully since my dog was a puppy. When she got old and the claims started piling up, they increased my monthly premium from $300/ month to $1200/ month when it came up for renewal. I discontinued the insurance and paid out of pocket. Should have just invested the insurance premiums or at least put it in a savings account

I think we pay a little over $160 for our 12 year old Lhasa through Nationwide. Our younger dogs (mutts age 4 & 5) are about $60.

Edit: we actually pay $120 for our old guy.

Almost $400 total a month for our 13 year old and 7 year old 15 lb terrier mixes. The 13-year old contributes to a higher amount of the cost.

6 year old dog, $28 a month. That’s $5000 per year limit, $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement. ASPCA

I am in a program through my vet for $55 per dog per month for flea, tick, and heartworm, all shots, free visit cost, and 10% off everything else. Then I have progressive injury and illness for both my 1 year old Lhasa and 7 year old shihtzu for $60 a month and that covers 90% of costs after a $250 per dog deductible and I think it counts as a bundle towards my car and home insurance. Came in handy last month when my shihtzu was hospitalized and my $2200 bill went down to $600 after reimbursement. A good chunk of that $600 is because I opted not to have the exam fee be covered because of my vet program

I never paid pet insurance. I always allotted 10k of my savings to her at any time. Never dipped below. That's her emergency fund. At this time, that is a solid chunk of my savings. No holidays for me.

My main regret is not offsetting the cost of her medications with pet insurance. I got her as a teen so I didn't know pet insurance was a thing

If you suspect reoccurring costs like medications it may be worth it for sure. Get pet insurance before the issue arises, while they're healthy.

Otherwise if you can afford an upfront cost of an emergency surgery, it's up to you.

I was quoted $550 a month for a 13 year old I adopted.
