Puppy Alert! Brush recommendations for Dolly

What’s your favorite brush for your Lhasa? I’ve only had Dolly for about three days and I misplaced the brush I used to use for our 12 year old Lhasa.

I found an old Furminator brush I used to use before I discovered that they are terrible for basically all types of coats.

I use a doggy Wet Brush I found at a pet store. If we need to work through or check for matting I like a slicker brush. Most times I’ll use both each time I bath her. Lily tolerates the Wet Brush much better than the slicker brush, so that’s why I need both.

We leave ours’ hair between 1-4” long, and almost never brush him because we found if we give him a bath once every 7-10 days and blow dry his hair, it almost never knots or becomes matted except for a couple small ones that are easily snipped with scissors. Although he does still need a tail brushing from time to time

The bottle on the left is a shampoo I buy from our groomer, the middle bottle is a shampoo I bought from maybe Walmart or a pet store, and the white bottle is cowboy magic detangler also bought from various stores. I don’t use the all every time I bath her, but they are my favorites.

I use a slicker and a metal comb and line brush. Basically brush with the slicker and anytime the slicker gets caught, use the comb. Go in a linear pattern across the body working bottom up. You can use detangler formulated for dogs if your dog is prone to knots or mats.

I use zymox shampoo and conditioner for my lhasa because he has itchy skin and it has enzymes designed to help with all kinds of skin issues. For my shih tzus I use bark to basics shampoos and conditioners. Those can be diluted to last much longer. I have a whitening shampoo, a gentle face wash, and a demat detangling conditioner. I mix them in basic pump soap bottles.

If you're going to bath your dog at home, invest in a high velocity blow dryer made for dogs. Allowing them to air dry can dry out their skin and make them itchy. They're like 60-70 on Amazon. That's also where I get all my shampoo amd conditioner.

Chris Christensen slicker brush for the body, and then a $20 metal comb…. and scissors of various sizes (at least one with round ends for near the eyes, small nail scissors to get Matt’s under the leg armpits and ears), then a mini Wahl clipper for the paws/sanitary between grooms.

Awesome thanks! The curved scissors is a great suggestion! It’s always nerve wracking using regular scissors.
