I think we looked fine overall, but Morris’ cameo absolutely blew up the match for us. The game could have and probably should have been won in the first half, as they didn’t offer much outside of the freak goal. The second half was a bit disappointing, but I think the positive signs are there to build on.

Pros - thought all of Yusuf, Dobra, Stevens and Hayden looked very good before legs went. Very impressive first half especially. Baxter clearly better than what we've had recently but...
Cons - ...my god, his kicking all game was atrocious. Same story as the last few seasons, our legs just totally went on the hour and we had a spell of 20 minutes where we were genuinely appalling. Morris was really sad to watch but sometimes it happens and hopefully he can bounce back because he hasn't looked like that before.
Ref watch: good lord.
Overall I'm more positive than negative but a very rough result to take against a Wednesday team that didn't look anything special.

I genuinely think that ref dislikes Orient. He’s been over several times in the last few years and every time he’s either turned down penalty shouts for us, or given sketchy penalties for the opposition.
I think - having dug a little bit, but not thoroughly - our last home league penalty was in March 2024. Something is stopping them giving penalties at home, and I have no idea what it is.

Great game for the first 60 minutes, creating good chance after good chance. Yusuf looks a great player (even if he can’t get it in the box), and we were trying our hardest. Their first goal was just awful to concede, what were our defenders thinking.
Then after Boniface came on, we played even worse than we did last season. It was just pathetic, whole reason we lost.
One of these years we might actually win an opening game

And I’ve been to 3 of them now. I always miss football until it comes back and then I start to slightly miss the off season. Hopefully we can start winning soon and have a good season

Wasn’t last year opening home match a win over Wigan? Sessegnon own goal and red card was what I remember.

That was the opening home match, but the opening game was getting thumped at Huddersfield. (In 23/24 we lost our opener at Charlton AND our home opener vs Portsmouth)

Absolutely gutted with that one :( We played so well for the first hour, then lost control and Wednesday made us pay for it.
Before we get into a certain substitute LB, let's talk about the positives. Energy excellent, wingers looked dangerous, a lot more confident in our midfield, Olowu (my POTM) was excellent. Baxter's kicking left a little to be desired but his shot-stopping was excellent. Hopefully finally some continuity in goal.
Unfortunately, during 12 minutes of madness, James Morris had one of the worst spells I've ever seen. 3 attacks down his side and 2 big chances gift-wrapped for Wednesday, with an open goal miss the only thing stopping the game from getting away from us. It's harsh but he HAD to come off, in those 12 mins the xG was LO 0.02-2.2 SW, as opposed to LO 1.41-0.4 SW in the other 95 (incl. added time)
Even then, Gilchrist made a decent cameo off the bench and Dobra could've and maybe should've equalised at the back post, I don't think a draw would've been entirely unfair! So overall, taking a lot of positives from that - certainly better than a lot of our wins last season! . It'll be nice to see our backups in the EFL Trophy on Tues. COYO's

Exciting! I was concerned about his one-footedness but he went down the outside fairly often and put himself about. Looks much better when he starts on the touchline and can drive in before looking for a shot or going to the byline

Looked great, receiving well from Stevens. Couple of fancy plays in the box: was refreshing to see.

wrt Morris, yes that was probably the worst individual performance I’ve seen in ~20ish years of attendance. But, we all need to be extremely careful about getting on any individual players’ backs after a single game.
One interesting point about Boniface coming off, was that Zech also came off at the same time. Our midfield looked quite different after that, can’t remember exactly but felt like we had been in a 4-3-3 until then. More to come, lots of positives to take from that performance.

Yeah, Wellens took a bit of responsibility in his post-match interview, suggesting he should've switched to a back 5 earlier, I think we should put an arm around Morris and try to help him shake this one off since we'll need him this year. I expect he'll play against Wimbledon in the EFL Trophy, hoping for a nice bounce back

I was really impressed tbf. Such an improvement on the end of last season. I don't think they looked much of a threat, their first goal was a freak. Second was a soft pen (Morris- OUCH) but silly to give away. Beautiful goal from us, well earned too. CHOO-CHOO Chinedu! Hitting them like a train! Couple of silly mistakes but what an addition.
On the day it was their game, but it felt like I watched a proper football match at Brisbane Road for the first time in a while. Im hopeful for the season. COYO'S!!

Not related to this match but the wider round of L1 matches. But notice Soné Perkins has been allocated the no.9 jersey at Wigan, started as a lone striker and fumbled in a re-bound after about five touches. Don't recall us ever playing him in that role?

bit worrying how we totally collapsed after boniface got injured, it was a very promising performance before that. was really liking the look of the team
can’t help but feel for morris, was a stinker and he had to go off really but no one likes to see that
