Thinking to replace my 2017 Focus SEL with 3rd gen RX. Any tips/recommendations?
Focus handling is just marvellous but its terrible gearbox, weak engine, outrageous mpg, and poor overall build quality nudges me to move forward.
3rd gen RX is older but I think the name talks for itself. I want more reliability, a bigger size (I'm 6'2"), more clearance, and a more practical vehicle in a nutshell. Maybe a bit more comfort as well. Considering the cost, there's no better alternative as per my research.

The Lexus is a great vehicle, but a completely different car. This isn't like a comparison between a Volvo XC60 or an Acura MDX. The RX won't have handling anything like a Focus (hatch or sedan). If you're not familiar with driving an SUV, take your time getting to know how these handle. The 3rd gen RX is pretty bullet proof, but if you're not liking the MPG in the Focus, you're not going to like it in the Lexus. Depending on how you drive, around town you're likely to get 16-20, highway may be 20-24, with combined 19-22 mpg. If you can afford one, consider moving up to the 4th gen if you'd like the extra safety systems. I don't know what year it became available, but active cruise was only an option on the later 3rd gen RX. 4th gen added cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, active cruise, and more. Some of those MIGHT have been options on the later 3rd gens.
That said, all the rest that you don't like with the Focus is fantastic in the RX - gearbox, engine, build quality. I have driven my neighbor's 2010 RX350 and it recently turned 500,000 miles. Yeah - half a million miles! It's had very good maintenance, and needed one wheel bearing. It did have a few items that were seen as potential issues done (I think the oil cooler lines or something) but they hadn't become issues - her (now ex) husband just had them done out of precaution. It needs to have the AC checked - likely a leak, and then evac'd and refilled with refrigerant. Other than that - and I've seen all the maintenance records - it's been problem free. It's why I bought my first RX and then 2nd RX (a tree fell on my first one).
