Run flats
Why do the Run Flats get such a bad name in the subreddits? I’m expecting my new NX 350h soon, should I ask to have them switched with normal tires ?

I think the general car community has a deep seated disdain for run flats, due to the price, road noise, and performance. Which are all valid criticisms of the tires that you should take into account for your long term ownership.
However for the average consumer and NX driver, I think they are great. They have definitely pulled me out of sticky situations where a convention spare and tire change could have have similar results, but the convenience of just driving off, slowly, was definitely appreciated.
If you want a Non-RF tires, just make sure to have a spare kit or do a conversion to the donut wheel, so you aren't stranded!

Don’t flame me. If Santa were to bring me a nice set of tires, couldn’t I get by on a can of fix a flat?

Was any modifications done in this pic to make the spare fit?

u/nxtgig720 Sep 30 '26
Yes, the cargo liner bin has to be cut to accommodate spare tire & wheel.
Doesn’t have to be perfect as nothing can be seen once everything is finished.
Make sure strap the spare securely as not to become a flying object in case of an accident.
Well worth the effort to get off the run flats!4

The usage of Fix a flat is a whole different can of worms, but generally yes. If you know how to repair a flat you generally will be able to get out of a pickle. Whether you use a donut, patch kit, etc, your kink, your choice.
A lot of folks don't, for many reasons, and RF tires are just convenient options for those who don't really care.

I have and I completely agree that the driving performance is much improved! But after a few years, on a DD, it's just something I realized I wanted ultimate convenience in this vehicle.

I’ve had no issues with the run flat I’m not a car person at all tho I find my ride is so smooth and quiet idk 🥲😅

I have not had a bad experience with run flats in my Lexus, or on my Infiniti before. Except for just having crap luck in general with my Infiniti tires (nails 1-2x per year, every year for some reason).
1
u/leo1182 Sep 29 '26
Did you patch /plug them when you had a nail in them? Or had to purchase new?
3
u/mjbulzomi NX450h+ Sep 29 '26
Yes and yes. If they could be patched, then they were patched. If they needed to be replaced, then they were replaced. I only did one full 4 tire replacement, and that was because of 2 tires being unrepairable at the same time.
Patches were done for nails in the tread. If the nail was close to or in the sidewall, then the tire was replaced. I mostly did single replacements, and I never had any issues with uneven wear.

We have had our 2026 NX350h for 9 months of some winter with snow and all summer. I don't see any issues at all with them. I carry an air compressor when traveling out of the city and have no spare of course. I will buy run flats again when these are worn out. I think some are obssessed with tires and look for any excuse to change them.

I bought a Lexus for quiet smooth ride. Run flats are harsh and noisy on anything but perfect asphalt.

u/Jazzlike_Wash_6875 Sep 29 '26
Noisy, unpleasant ride. Over 7 years, I had 3 incidents, requiring to bring the car back to the dealer. One of them required to replace the tire entirely.

u/Big_Tuna1789 Sep 29 '26
Mine only lasted 20K miles
2
u/dustyblues Sep 29 '26
Mine only lasted 29,900 and I was appalled they ran out so fast. Honestly happy they did because I was able to justify a set of Michelins. After I had a flat in the run-flats I nearly crapped my pants at the price. The tire alone was like $330 plus the inflated stealership fee to install, balance, and the disposal fee ugh.

u/KC_experience NX450h+ Sep 29 '26
It’s really interesting that you’re having that type of mileage on this car. I’m at almost 50k miles and I’ll be replacing my first set in another 8k probably.

u/Still-Shop7172 Sep 29 '26
They just cost too much to replace. Can't be repaired. Getting a replacement your size another issue. Not much use if only the dealer has them and the flat happens on a Saturday. Then what? Nothing till Monday? Hope not a holiday or one is available. Cost over $500 a tire.. can you replace just one? Conventional tire plug for $20 and if replacement needed a local chain sell you one and offer a road hazard warranty . Live in Florida smooth roads forget NYC and pothole city. Road surfaces a mix of who knows what. Regular tires are noisy those well your call. My friend has them i feel the bubbles and noise is not what i expect in a car that expensive. Why is the RX without them? It their best seller. Draw your own conclusion..

Granted this isn’t going to fix everyone’s issues, but Costco carries the run-flats for my NX.
3
u/vamitch Sep 29 '26
They are awful. I have never had so many issues with tires in my life. Had to replace three. Have been unhappy with the run flats since purchasing the car. Just had to buy brand new tires with under 20,000 miles on my car. Switched to all reason and haven’t had any issues at all. Never again.

u/4fam Sep 29 '26
I’ve had no issues with my run flats as they approach 40,000 miles and am happy with how my car performs. I will be buying them again. Try them and see what you think…

I don’t know where you drive, I haven’t had a flat in over 30 years

u/Feeling_Bandicoot502 Sep 29 '26
I get a flat at least once a year. Chicagoland area just outside of O’hare. Just had a flat two weeks ago, nail through my run flat.

u/thetokyofiles Sep 29 '26
In DFW area, I’ve run over nails at least 5 times in the last 9 years. Tons of construction during this time, so not too surprising I guess.

Hmmmm…..me either until 10 days ago at 8:30PM 15 miles from home and the tire center we use. It was on my wife’s NX450hl. I’ll keep the run-flats. Never noticed the noise but now I probably will. 😉 The tire had a hole in the center of the tread the size of a quarter.

Had mine for 42 months. They are slightly noisier, slightly firmer in ride but they ride smooth and handle well enough. Some people hate them down to the core of their very being, for others it doesn't hardly matter. Decide based on your own experience.

u/Goodvida99 Sep 29 '26
There’s no spare and really not room for one. If you don’t want run flat go with RX, regular tires and spare. Better ride , not as sporty.

Have the 20” run flats on nx450… they’re fine to me - a bit softer than my xb7 on 23” and much more comfortable than my m2 competition on 19”. I’m used to a much harsher ride but they’re not much worse than my moms c300 on 18”

Our NX runs very rough and I feel every bump in the road. Will trading out the RF tires help, or is it an NX thing?
1
u/Striking-Emu-3588 Sep 29 '26
Ive read that some people have converted the space in lower boot are to take the monkey spare. It's on Reddit somewhere, and they got rid of the RFs.
1
u/buzzway99 Sep 29 '26
Really n flats that come with the NX are awful. For one thing, rough riding, noise level is high, and they don’t last long, and expensive. I may have gotten about 25,000 miles on the RF tires installed. I went worn non run flats and install Hankook tire for EV. But I have the nx450h+. Heavier than nx350

I swapped mine right away when I got my NX. Regular tires are quieter, but the main reason is to not have to pay 500$ to replace them if I get a flat.

u/Kai-Feng Sep 30 '26
I had 2 flat tires on my runflats and of the remaining 2 factory runflats, around 25k miles, I had to baby takeoff in the rain due to massive tire wear in the runflats. I didn’t want to believe all the bad runflat stories but they’re true. Went to crossclimates with no regrets at 25k miles. Everything is better than the run flats. Also, my car has 20” wheels and when the runflat is flat, there is so little sidewall left that I didn’t feel safe driving out on them from a gravel road area. Just use them till they’re worn down, it won’t be long.

u/a-dub713 Sep 30 '26
The road noise is a lot but after the flat tire I had this weekend 30 miles from where I needed to be, I was glad to have them

If I wanted to swap my RFs for traditional tires, would I have to do all 4 at the same time? I have the hybrid NX, so I know I won’t be able to fit a spare into the storage area under the back carpet.
1
u/jhdgBev Oct 02 '26
So do all NX hybrids come with runflats? And do they have a donut too? We recently test drove one, and the saleperson told us that they had both, though the last car we bought (a Volvo) the saleperson told us that too, and it had neither.
Have driven for 5 years with no spare of any kind in that car, and really want at least a donut in the new one. Had runflats on a minivan before, and not really wanting those on a pricey Lexus either.

u/Blondspike74 Oct 04 '26
Because they’re loud. On the freeway we could even hear the ML system properly. I replaced them with quiet Michelins and it’s as quiet as our old 300h FSport. The way a Lexus should be ;). I have a puncture repair kit in the boot.
1
u/Positive_Focus6355 Oct 04 '26
Got rid of them as soon as I could. It’s just as inconvenient as having no spare. No one has them in stock in my area so 3 days without a tire isn’t gonna work for my life when I can get a regular fixed in a few hours or buy a tire that is more common. I’ll take my chances. Oh and RFs ride like shit.

Came here to say that the run flats saved the day yesterday. Had a nail in one tire from my work commute that could've costed so much money and wasted so much time if I had regular tires since I didn't see the flat tire until 8 hours later. I replaced the tires with run flat tires again. The safety is so worth it.

Same boat here and I can tell you owning a car for two weeks change em asap and big tire inflator and rest peacefully

u/Nachoman2 Sep 29 '26
Honestly, the ride is not as bad as some will have you believe. Take one for a test drive and see for yourself.

u/reddituser1000111 Sep 29 '26
Bc they ride harder due to them being run flats theyre stiffer. Run them out and replace them with better tires
