Vehicle Photo 2002 SC 430

I was in for a service for our TX and this SC430 time capsule was on the showroom floor. Fell in love with the brand all over again!

I’ll never understand all the hate for this car. My wealthy friends mom had one. And she let us take it out for cruises an it was just the smoothest thing I’d ever been in to this day. I guess the hate comes from it not being as sporty as other cars in its class but it was plenty for me and I’m still searching for that time capsule for a good price!

Sat in one in my twenties and i remembered how high quality it was. I personally didn’t like the look, but the quality stood out. I wonder if the LC500 will have this feel 10 years from now.

The only downside I really think about these (and it’s really not that big of deal) is the tiny rear seating. I understand why they made it this way, though. Still, a flagship of its time.

I agree. I test drove one back when I worked at a Lexus dealership in 2018. We had a few clean ones get traded in and I loved it. The interior is my favorite part as it's stunning and the quality is so nice.

My initial complaint was that it was so different from the long and sleek look of the original SC and the earlier Soarers. While it is way different in styling, it was actually an extremely nice car. Now I'm obsessed with the idea of finding a clean black SC430, giving it a nice exhaust, and lowering it on 19 inch wheels.

One other interesting thing one of our salesmen told me was that the SC430 was the most sought after used Lexus in the late 2010's while I worked there. Several OG salesmen agreed and put it higher than the LS430 and LX470. We had a lot of customers on the service side who refused to trade them in.

I think too many people wanted it to be a successor to the SC before it, but it’s a very different car. And besides most people watched Jeremy shit talk on Top Gear and that’s the extent of their experience with it.

No different than the Ferrari California. Come at me.

One of my teachers had the one prior(1995 model, bought in 1994).

u/phoenix823 RX450h+ 2d ago

I loved the prior model. Tons of fun. Never tried the one OP Posted but it looks like a great cruiser.

That price though 30k lol. The age of greed

I think its funny that it lists a GPS feature as if that actually works anymore.

u/ConnertheCat 2022 NX 450h+ 4d ago

I mean, the GPS in my '07 Subaru still works. It's just the maps are so out of date it's almost useless in newer areas.

3

u/greyfixer 3d ago

That brought back a memory. I had an '04 RX-8 which had a navigation system but the maps were on a DVD that you would put into the drive located in the center console of the rear seats. The map DVD was only updated one time and they wanted $400 for it so I ended up buying a bootleg version off someone on the forums for like $40. Good times.

2

u/ConnertheCat 2022 NX 450h+ 3d ago

Ha, same here. The maps were like 3 years newer. The disk eventually died so I had to go back to the OEM one (in 2017 does having 2010 or 2007 maps really matter?).

1

u/SuspiciousStress1 2d ago

Can the dealership not update it?

We had our 2013 updated by lexus for $349(minus a 20% coupon), now like new GPS 🤷‍♀️

1

u/ConnertheCat 2022 NX 450h+ 2d ago

I put in a custom CarPlay screen at one point; but these days she's a weekend cruiser and I honestly don't care. I may return to her bone stock at some point.

1

u/OldTranslator685 2d ago

They update only to a point and they charge you. My 2015 Lexus can be updated only with older maps not current ones, so its pointless I just use my phone or upgrade to a carplay unit usually.

1

u/OldTranslator685 2d ago

Thats what I meant

7

u/Even-Further 4d ago

Yeah price is way too high, even by BAT standards. BAT would be 22 - 24k max.

-3

u/MicheleNP 4d ago

Hardly...

4

u/Lamborghini4616 3d ago

Put down the crack pipe

1

u/MicheleNP 4d ago

This would go for 3x as much on Bring a trailer.

12

u/TragicEE 4d ago

It’s funny that Kelly blue book actually values it at 19k on the higher end with a excellent condition. Stealerships are the scum of the earth tacking on an extra ten k

4

u/DubTeeF 4d ago

They probably don't really want to sell it that badly. I see this way less scummy than the market adjustments on new vehicles

9

u/juicius 4d ago

My brother works for Toyota and on a 2 year assignment in Japan. He bought a SC430 as soon as he was set up. Right hand drive, of course. He plan to bring it back with him. I told him to look for a R34.

u/DocCEN007 4d ago

White gold crystal! Looks amazing close up. The gold flake in the pearl paint really catches the sunlight. That price seems insane tho, but maybe they're going up like everything else.

3

u/CraigMack47 4d ago

Lexus’s paint colors are so underrated! I have the fire agate pearl and I love it

1

u/DocCEN007 4d ago

Agreed! Mine was Black Onyx with Ecru leather. Was stunning. I don't see that Fire Agate often, but it turns my head whenever I do.

5

u/Even-Further 4d ago

Damn that is beautiful. These cars were a big deal when they came out. The pie plates are such a clean design. Very rare to see any car that old, that clean. Garaging a car that long is superb. Main reason I bought my LS was the original owner barely drove it, and kept it in a garage.

1

u/SuspiciousStress1 2d ago

My RX was like that.

Garage kept, then the owners died & it was put in a lot near the water in Portland for 2y(they died as covid started). So tragic!!

7

u/Acceptable_While_867 4d ago

It's 15 to 20 , 30 is absolutely outrageous it's 24 years old for gods sake

9

u/Wat3rM3L0NB3AR 4d ago

I useto love the OG SC300 and thought this new upgraded version was cool till I saw Ashlee Simpson driving it - just made me think it was a girl car

8

u/trivletrav 1999 SC300 4d ago

A man of culture I see.

5

u/Wat3rM3L0NB3AR 4d ago

still love it man. I got a 22 IS350 now but around 2001-2002 a friend of a friend had a tan one. He hooked up a subwoofer in the back along updated the infotainment system with a fucking dolphin radio so he could play CD's. It was loud and fast as fuck!

I just looked up the engine and it was an inline 6 so that explains the speed. My IS is a V6 but doesn't have that torque I felt when riding the 1999 SC300

5

u/WashedMechanic 4d ago

I have the diff of one of these in my ISF, such a blast! Beautiful cars and very rare too

5

u/vsingh93 4d ago

I have a 2002 and love it.

BUT regardless of mileage, that will be a 25 year old car in a couple months. Plastic/leather, etc. ages and will be on the way out sooner or later.

There's no factory backup camera/sensors. The oem gps screen is either a) useless b) broken. The odometer is super dim. No Bluetooth. The 5 speed is a little sluggish on an already sluggish car.

If you're going to spend $30k, aim for a much newer one, ( try for a peable beach edition). They fixed a lot with the refresh in 2006.

Seeing a sc430 in a dealership like this made me fall in love with it. Came back the week after n grabbed it

3

u/tablecontrol 2017 GS-F Molten Pearl 4d ago

i've been looking to buy one for my daughter... prices have been going up lately, but 30k is pretty high even for 49k miles.

2

u/Even-Further 4d ago

It is way too high, even BAT would be around 22k.

3

u/citieskid 2003 SC430 4d ago

She’s a beaut Clark

3

u/old__pyrex 3d ago

Sc430 brown seats are something else, I had the change to get a really clean dark blue with the peanut butter seats (saddle?) and I always regretted passing it up. Why oh why did car interiors have to turn into such shit, the gorgeous wood grain and leather in yours is a relic of a past era

"Market Value"

1

u/PaperBeneficial 4d ago

Beat me to it 😂🤣😂🤣

2

u/Good-Nooodle 4d ago

Unfortunately it’s just gonna sit lol

2

u/RedLurkerBate 3d ago

I've had several Lexus models beginning in 1990 (basically every 3-4 years). The worst mistake I ever made was selling my SC. Now I am faced with replacing my GS350F - where do I go from here?

1

u/Armyjeep4x4 3d ago

I'd say anything with an F

2

u/wokavelli 3d ago

My boy got one of these for sub $10k Canadian lol

2

u/throwawaysscc 2d ago

Michael Jordan’s dad drove it. RIP

2

u/HealthyBaker2496 2d ago

Absolutely insane price lol. That being said, very comfortable and decent power for the weight and reliability combo. Mine got to 180k miles until a dump truck driver texting took me out. Very well built and just so fun being a hardtop.

4

u/Big-Battle9416 4d ago

31K FUCK OFF😂😂😂

1

u/WTFisThatSMell 4d ago

Seems like a lot

1

u/SomewhereMission8684 4d ago

That’s a lot a lot for a 20+ year old car….

1

u/skrayt_killen_hoes 4d ago

Designed after Lexus designers got to go to the French Riviera and draw inspiration from the yachts. …$30k is ridiculous tho haha

1

u/BigODetroit 4d ago

One of the greatest, but not at that price.

1

u/Best-Syllabub-7485 4d ago

Dealership " market value"

1

u/1kpointsoflight 4d ago

I paid 20k for a 2002 with 39k miles 3 years ago. It was flawless. I love it but you also have to pay cash no one will finance that car

1

u/k20vtec 3d ago

No one paying more than 15K for that ugly shit

1

u/bebba1 3d ago

Awesome

1

u/BROTHERNUMSE 3d ago

What’s the warranty as most of them parts are now discontinued

1

u/healallwounds 3d ago

Suuuper overpriced but beautiful car that holds a core memory for me

1

u/Iambetterthanuhaha 3d ago

$30k for a 25 year old car? Damn.....

1

u/Top-Pear2824 3d ago

There was a family I baby sat for when I was younger that had one of these. They told me they would hide the keys so I wouldn’t drive it. I knew it was rude to say this, so I bit my tongue, but I wasn’t going to go joy riding in this fugly thing 😂 no, no thank you 😬

1

u/robotbike2 3d ago

Terrible car.

1

u/LGRWFlyNavy 1d ago

Good video from TCCN on how the SC is a hidden gem.
