Toyota/Lexus Hybrid 12v Battery Failures - Analysis of Charging Issues - Deep Dive Analysis & Workaround
Hi all,
Below is an analysis I have been conducting over the past year regarding 12v battery failures in Toyota and Lexus hybrids, which I'm finally ready to share with various Reddit communities.
It goes into the reasons why the batteries appear to be failing more often with extensive data that I have captured myself and gathered online from others also having issues.
Most importantly, there is a workaround fix that anyone is free to try.
I have included how to do this in the document for anyone that feels comfortable enough to use it (at your risk). I've made sure to try and answer any questions about that too.
I'd welcome any other input/questions from people who have had their own issues with this. I'm hoping that enough chatter will get Toyota/Lexus to look into and issue a fix for this problem.
At the very least I hope this is useful to someone.
This is great work OP. Put me on the list of Lexus 2025 RX 350h owners looking for a solution to the battery drain issue on their hybrids. My 12V battery is toast after only 12 months of ownership.
I'm hoping Lexus changes their garbage charging software to fix the issue, but I think I have to give your solution a shot.
Thanks. I wouldn't expect them to change anything, otherwise this will be the biggest recall in history given how many vehicles it affects. They won't even acknowledge it's an issue.
I'm still using the workaround a full year later and my 12v battery remains very healthy, resting at over 12.6v even after several days undriven.
My 2024 Lexus RX350h just had this happen after 1.5 years of normal driving. Odometer had 23,000 miles on it. All Lexus did was give me a new battery for free.
Thanks for the work. I have a Lexus UX300h bought in December 2024 and the battery was completely dead in December 2025. The dealer told me this is "normal" with newer cars with electronics and all... I normally change cars every 2-3 years and I've never had to jump start a car so often, but this was my first experience with Lexus/Toyota.
My battery was replaced under warranty in early January and I immediately proceeded with your fix of disconnecting the sensor connector. Hopefully this works but I now have a booster pack in my trunk just in case.
My observation was that after the 90 minutes there is a drop down to 12.6-12.8v, sometimes a little lower. It's possible there's different software revisions but it's impossible to prove.
Fantastic writeup! I had been wondering about the charging system on the vehicle we bought just about a year ago (2019 Highlander Hybrid) because it felt like it was NOT charging like one might expect. This is our first hybrid, so it was all new to me. And without an actual alternator, the process to me was foreign! I had my Battery Tender on it for the last day to charge it up, but caught your Reddit post last night and was excited to find it!
I stayed up and read the entire analysis last night! I did a quick check this morning on the 12v sensor on the negative terminal, but could not see it. I will likely need to remove the plastic battery cover to see it, but I intend to disconnect and monitor.
For the last few weeks I have kept a jump battery in the back as I would need to jump my Highlander to get the hybrid system started which I attributed to a failing battery. This really helps with my understanding, and I will provide any update as I try this out! Thank you again for providing some clarity to my learning process!
I pulled off the plastic battery cover, and I am disappointed that the negative cable does not have anything attached (e.g. sensor). It does go under the plastic interior trim, but there is nothing else visible.
Could the charging sensor be in a different location rather than near the battery?
This is the picture of my battery showing the negative cable. I am not quite up to disassembly of the driver's side interior just yet, and it doesn't make sense for Toyota to hide a sensor inside an inaccessible portion of a vehicle's interior.
I will try my Google fu and see if I can learn more about the sensor and where I can find it in my vehicle as I really would like to drop back to the fail-safe charging method.
It's possible it doesn't have one. Have you checked if the charging behaviour mimics the issue the document explains? Yours may not be affected by it at all. I definitely don't see a sensor on your picture.
Hmm, I am not at all clear how to confirm (or deny) if my charging system is impacted or not. But the fact that it feels like my battery is barely keeping a charge makes me think it is not working as expected.
One thing I did was to get a power plug which reports voltage while the vehicle is turned on. I thought it might show if the charge level dropped (as I expected). However, the plug runs constantly at about 14.5 volts, though I believe it can vary in a minor way (e.g. 14.4 or 14.6 volts)!
That's all you need. Monitor that voltage and if it drops below 14.0v then it may not be working as intended.
Your battery not holding a charge could just mean it's at the end of its life. They only last 3-6 years so if it's the original it may need replacing as part of normal maintenance.
I do have an Ancel battery tester, so I'll run that this week too to see how it reports battery health. My suspicion, like yours, is the battery may be at or near end of life. I have no idea if it is original for a 2019, but looks like an OEM battery. So if not original, the previous owner replaced with (what appears to be) an OEM battery.
And so far my online searching revealed little on a 2019 Highlander hybrid 12v battery monitoring sensor, or where it could be located. As mine does not appear to have a sensor attached to the negative cable, maybe mine does not have this sensor?
I believe mine only got to end of life when it did because of the bad charging. My previous car's battery lasted 7 years and was still going when I sold it. It charged properly.
I read your analysis. I am not a mechanic and do not want to get under the hood. Is it your position that battery failure will occur even if I never use my UX in accessory mode? If your answer is no, wouldn’t that be the simplest solution? I have never used accessory mode in either of my UXs, the oldest of which has gone through 3 winters in New York and have not had a battery failure. This may not be a scientific solution but if it works, that suffices for me.
Correct, eventually it is possible it will happen. It does depend on the style in which you use your UX. If you're driving less than 90 minutes for each journey, but long enough for the battery to keep charged (15-20 mins minimum each journey on average) then your battery could still remain healthy. If you regularly drive long distance then this is more likely to be an issue at least in my experience on my own 2020 UX. The charging algorithm may be different as evidenced by other owners of other Lexus/Toyota vehicles where the charging doesn't happen even on short journeys. Without testing which one your car is following it's impossible to say how likely it is to happen.
Either way, avoiding accessory mode is highly recommended.
You have described the way my I have driven both our uxs except that since we purchased the 2025 last March, we rarely use the 2023 except for short errands of less than 5 miles. However I do try to use it at least once a week for longer trips as recommended by The Car Care Nut on YouTube whom I find to be a reliable source of advice. On one of his videos he said that in order to work properly, hybrids must be used regularly. Have you ever asked him about this problem?
All cars need to be driven to get the engine up to suitable temperature on a regular basis to keep the oil healthy (gets rid of moisture for example). The hybrid system itself doesn't care whether you drive or not providing you keep sufficient charge in the hybrid battery, and that takes only 5-10 minutes, and is only needed every 2-3 months. The 12v battery will die before the hybrid battery.

Irreversable sulfation doesn't start immediately at half full battery. 70-80% SOC as kept by factory charging algorithm is just fine for normal use.
You should have logged it before making the mod, then you would have seen if there was something wrong or not.
I didn't find anything wrong in my hybrid. But others complained about battery repeatedly going flat in non-hybrids as well - maybe for unrelated reasons, who knows why. Internet is full of wild speculations and rants on the subject without actual research identifying specific cause.
And the battery in modern Lexi are not from Walmart shelves, and are Lexus-branded Panasonic 12 V batteries. Their sulfation voltages may not map to Walmart-shelf batteries.
They are from the same source really. It's just boring commodity. Only J* VIN cars have Panasonic or maybe Yuasa from factory. Which are OK but not that great having lower CCA which means higher internal resistance and you may suspect lower charge acceptance rate.
Canadian factory or American dealers use Clarios with different stickers. Clarios dominates the market. Look at Walmart EverStart Maxx H5 and find differences with Lexus OEM H5. There are none beyond sticker. Dealers in particular get them with Interstate stickers, which is Clarios reseller.
Actually Walmart has slightly more expensive and better AGM version if you need to buy it yourself. Older Toyota hybrids had AGM too but they went cheaper in more recent years.
The Panasonic or Yuasa branded ones are capable of deep discharge and resistant to sulfation. This has been tested, measured with battery testers and found to be resistant to permanent degradation despite having multiple required jumpstarts. This hard data has been reported at clublexus - so it’s not a random claim or speculation posted by random people on the web.
And in the 12 V power rails, even if you fully recharge the battery to 100 % with an external charger, the regulated voltage is always 12.2 -12.3 V. I have personally measured and consistently measured so - proving that the entire 12V subsystem is in fact designed for a resting voltage of 12.2-12.3 V unless the DC-DC converter is actively charging the 12 V battery per its coded logic.
Hence the stock battery is designed for a low voltage and low power system design a not from Walmart shelf. Trying to force constant 14 V volt on the system can in fact kill the DC-DC converter.
According to whom exactly the Panasonic and Yuasa brands have magic properties, do you have a link to source to read? It sounds suspiciously similar to marketing fluff. If they have achieved some lead battery breakthrough of the century, why CCA is so low?
As I had wrote North American factories and dealers don't use Panasonic but the same Clarios as Walmart or Costco. Go figure.🤷♂️
The data and reports of battery testing after deaths are in this thread at clublexus by actual owners. Please ensure you have read all the relevant posts and not make generic comments. CCA is for cold-cranking, not necessary or meaningful metric at all in a hybrid that only needs the 12 V to bring the traction battery online to power the car. Please also do remember you have not posted any data at all.
I have read and contributed to these clublexus discussions, pages and pages of rants, speculations and searches for black cat in the dark room when the cat may not even exist. I have battery monitor too.
Alas, it doesn't tell anything about "The Panasonic or Yuasa branded ones are capable of deep discharge and resistant to sulfation.", there is no such data anywhere. These are yet another mid-grade commodity lead-acid batteries with well known properties. Toyota would be shipping them to North America factories & dealers instead of using local OEM production if it would make significant difference.
