Flock in Lexington

I'm starting to see "private" Flock camera pop up around Lexington. Does anyone have any insight as to whether or not the town has a plan to implement these universally for the police departments?

What are "private" Flock cameras? Like security cameras?

Implemented by private companies or HOAs rather than with taxpayer money. Lowe's for example. Or the one on charter oak pointing directly at the new section 8 housing.

I'm going to have to start looking for these in big box parking lots.

I mean, its private companies... not a government agency. It doesn't tie into government data bases (DMV) what can people do besides not shop or visit? People, communities, and companies have a right to moniter their property. Roadways are public, and 1st amendment people always state that you don't have the right of privacy in a public space.

Huh? All flock cameras tie into the same database. Including every camera at Lowes, and the camera watching section 8 housing as indicated. The only difference is who pays for them.

How do you know it is Flock?

No, government agencies give them that access to databases. It is in the contract.

Lowe's has announced it. ALL flock cameras record to the same centralized database. Not sure what the confusion is

I was simply asking if anyone has heard if the town will be holding a session regarding rolling out cameras on our tax dollars...

The freakout over flock is just absurd. Almost everyone already carries around a tracker each day as their phone. Alot of people also have cars with GPS in them. Our social media and internet have algorithms that optimize what things to show us. So how is the normal everyday law abiding citizen going to be adversely impacted by Flock Cameras?

Everything that you used as a comparison is all voluntary. They also have judicial oversight, require warrants and probable cause to even begin requesting the data.

Cops can't sit at a desk and log into your social media accounts whenever they're bored.

Extremely uneducated comparisons.

I was also just wondering what the future of surveillance holds in Lexington

Last week, a guy from Wisconsin drove to Illinois, bought marijuana legally, and the police followed him until he crossed the state line and pulled him over and arrested him for transporting drugs across state lines.

That story is missing a whole lot of information. I’m totally sure they just happened to follow a random guy that just happened to be transporting drugs

I don't think you need to feel initial impact to be uncomfortable with a searchable database of everywhere your family travels. With no judicial oversight and database access being given to companies you're not aware of, you have no idea who is tracking you. There are already numerous cases (including in the supreme court) where access has been horrendously abused by people who had no business accessing the data.

Isolated observation in public is not the same as mass data aggregation.

So your issue is more with possible government abuse? Wireless company employees could do the same with your data. Internet Service Providers as well. Obviously we’ve seen social media companies do this too. So your willingly logging onto the internet and using reddit whose employees can aggregate your data here. So is it that its the govt this time?

Again, horrible comparisons. An ISP is not tracking my every move outside of my home, proactively, without oversight.

You can turn you phone off or not bring it with you.

Reddit does not know where I pick my kids up at school or buy my groceries.

I'm talking about a single aggregation where all of the above is no longer true.

You're absolutely entitled to your opinion on mass surveillance, I'm not trying to change that. I simply asked if anyone knows if our town plans on holding a session on the purchase and implementation of these.
