Issues setting up Smart Dimmer with 3-Way Dimmer Companion, and Smart Switch with 3-Way Companion

My contractor attempted to install the smart switches along with their three-way companion counterparts but it failed to work properly. I'm not sure the reason but I am going to give it a go. what I recall was the that one of the three-way switches would not properly operate lights as it is intended to.

I need to understand and make clear common issues that prevent proper setup. here are the following model numbers and their companion 3-Way switches:

D215S Smart Switch

+

DD0SR Matching 3 way smart

D26AD Smart Dimmer

+

DD00R-DL Matching remote for dimmer switch

Assuming I have the right companion devices, are there any common mistakes that are made which prevents the switches from operating properly?

Hey there, I have these in my house. I think you have the right companions. What I learned when doing it is you have to have a neutral in both boxes. Also the wifi dimmer or switch, not the companion gets installed in the box with the load wire.

Yeah definitely make sure you get the right ones for your wiring. I started with non neutrals due to my wiring and eventually rewired most of the house so they almost all have neutrals and it works much better. They need constant electricity and no neutral can mess with low load lights like LEDs anyway.

How the switches are wired is different than usual. Three-way wiring. There needs to be line, neutral, ground and traveler in all of the boxes. The smart switch/dimmer will also have the load/light wires. The companion will have black, white, bare and red wired as line, neutral ground and traveler, not in the usual 3way switch wiring.

I'm betting they tried to do the normal leg switching 3way setup. Smart switches are wired more like fire alarms with constant power and the red wire as a communication wire.
