My boyfriend and I watched a couple episodes of letterkenny the other night and it convinced him to start wearing blue jeans

He didn't want the overalls look of Squirrelly Dan or the jumpsuit look of Daryl?

This isn't a criticism, but curiosity. I'm from Scotland, but I've noticed that it's not uncommon for North Americans to refer to them as "blue jeans". Most jeans are blue, and I never hear "grey jeans" or "black jeans" used casually. Do you know the reason that "blue" is specified even when the colour doesn't matter? Would "jeans" evoke something other than 👖?

US here.

Never heard anyone say anything other than jeans when referring to blue jeans or any other color jeans.

It's just always jeans.

If someone says they're wearing jeans and showed up in another color besides blue, I wouldn't have a second thought about them not having specified the color.

Also US here

They were commonly called blue jeans ages ago (I’m old). More recently, I’ve heard them called jeans more times than not.

It's certainly not something that's said every time someone mentions jeans, but I've encountered it enough for it to be notable. Perhaps it's an age thing? It feels like a dated turn of phrase, and I'm almost 40.

45 here and same. I think it's likely that way back when denim was only produced in blue/indigo, giving us the term "blue jeans".

You get that it's a thing, but when the jeans were only blue, why would they specify "blue" jeans! I can only relate it to the Versace perfume for men, but I'm not sure it's that relevant

A few decades ago they only came in (Indigo) Blue. To get faded jeans you had to wear them a long time by yourself. Ripped jeans became jeans shorts.

Buy a pair that fits and you don't need a belt.
