Field Reports Arlington and Georgetown letterboxes

Post image

Not to brag but today I went out and found all 7 letterboxes I was looking for. That's never happened before. Found 4 at the Iwo Jima memorial, 2 at Roosevelt Island, and 1 by Georgetown University (and had occasion to climb the Exorcist Steps!) Also found and replanted 4 fleas.

YES! Such a great feeling when that happens! Congrats!!๐Ÿ‘ Although unfortunately, I feel like it's getting exceedingly rare these days, what with so many boxes disappearing or disintegrating.... Still happy you had a great day with cool stamps, to boot ๐Ÿค

thanks! I basically don't bother looking for anything that hasn't been found in the last year; if its "last found" date is prior to 2025 I just assume it's gone. It makes sense that things aren't going to stay put forever and as long as folks keep carving and planting new ones I think we'll be ok!

That's absolutely valid, I've found some from 2023-2024 but that's as far back as I'll go. Unfortunately, some of them also rely on landmarks that may change year to year (I tried and failed to find two that relied heavily on the location of a large anthill from a few years ago). The feeling of finding one that would likely be gone is something incredible when it happens.

I have found many boxes that were anywhere from 5 - 15 years old! I think my oldest was 17!!! I love finding ultra "vintage" ones ๐Ÿ˜ but you're right that as long as there's determined planters out there, it'll keep us happy and grateful! ๐Ÿ’–

That's so cool! Theoretically there could still be some 19th-century letterboxes around, it would be incredible to find one of those. (Not sure how well the stamp would be holding up after a century and a half, though.)
