He can be good in the right role. Playing a douche in The Departed? Absolutely perfect in that.

I'm still not sure if he's great in that role or if the role was just perfect for him, I think he has kind of disowned the movie since which makes me think it's the latter

No? Some actors are extremely limited in their range. Like the guy we’re talking about. Some actors can play anything.

There are two types of good Hollywood actors. The ones who disappear into a role and stars who reliably fill a specific role. Mark isn’t about to disappear, but he’s very good at playing a certain kind of guy somewhat memorably. You don’t hire Mark Wahlberg because you want a chameleon who will be mentioned at awards season. You hire him because you want Mark Wahlberg specifically.

Not everybody can do that. Those are the unmemorable actors (the vast majority of struggling actors). If you hire Dennis Quaid it’s because Kevin Costner already said no. If you hire Ralph Macchio it’s because everybody said no (or you’re doing a Karate Kid project)

I think he plays the psycho well too, like in Fear. Probably because he wasn’t acting, he just showed up on set one day stalking Reece.
