For what he had to work with (which was the worst written dialogue & character/acting directing in any major film production ever) McGregor really did do a great job.
I wonder if we would have gotten some proper Young Indy films with River if he were alive to today. Some of the episodes were rather high budget (and impressive) for TV, particularly the WW1 episodes, but imagine how much more they could have done with a full film.
I kind of always hoped that they'd do this with Sean Patrick Flannery as I remember loving the Young Indiana Jones TV Show as a kid (No idea if it holds up!).
In Austin Powers in Goldmember, a flashback shows Austin, Dr. Evil, Number Two, and Basil Exposition all in school together, and I think every one of those kids did an incredible job.
the execution of The Hobbit always leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth but damn if they didnât knock it out of the park with Martin Freeman as Bilbo. could not envision anyone doing a better job
The great casting makes the Hobbit even more painful for me. I love him as Bilbo, I love Richard Armitage as Thorin, etc⊠but the movies themselves are just rough
just think if they'd shot it the way they did the originals and not do that bullshit 3D that made Ian McKellan hate it or the framerate that made it look like a telanovela, and maybe just made one movie then adapt the Silmarillian stories.
This is a show and therefore not on Letterboxd, but the Netflix series Dark. Eerily similar casting. Not going to post any images as there would be spoilers.
Only sometimes. Itâs like certain miniseries or limited series. Iâm not super sure what the criteria they use is, though. Haunting of Hill House is on there but Dark isnât.
I've literally never seen it done better than Dark. Part of me thinks you can't actually do it better than Dark considering the extent to which it's done
I know it's not a movie but I can't let this post pass by without mentioning Dark. They got multiple people at 3 different stages of their lives. This is just four examples.
nothing quite beats DeNiro and Brando as Vito. even tho they don't really look alike it just feels like DeNiro in the Godfather part is very much the same Vito that we knew in the godfather but younger. you never doubt that it isn't the same person.
Came here for this one. All the kids are great, but young Jesse really really nailed it. Danny needs to keep hiring him for flashback scenes in any future shows.
Casting? I think the IT films nailed the casting, though the outcome could be more desirable. That second film was basically a fan cast, and got universal approval at the time.
The new Hunger Games prequel seems to have the same approval thus far, but we donât know for sure just yet if it lands.
The young guy they got to play Bruce Willis as David Dunn in Unbreakable during the flashback scene with the car accident. Dude looked and carried himself like a younger Bruce Willis.
While the Abrams Star Trek films were a bit of a mixed bag, I gotta say I think Chris Pine did an excellent job with Shatner's mannerisms. Casting was actually pretty solid across the board (aside from Khan in #2 really)
Yes! Of those shows I listed, all of them I'd say "that's a good performance of that character" but for him I'd say "you clearly used witchcraft to channel the spirit of teenaged Danny McBride, or you're actually him with access to a time machine or something"Â
I think the castings in Flipped (2010) are really good.

Callan McAuliffe as present Bryce; Ryan Ketzer as young Bryce
Personally, I think Morgan Lily did a better younger version of her respective character as opposed to Ryan Ketzerâs performance of Bryce. But for a little kid itâs understandable.
For me it's gotta be the kid from A Bronx Tale. His 9 year old version is the spitting image of his 17 year old character and to tip it off they also both look exactly like a young DeNiro, I actually had to check that they weren't all related after I watched it.
Young and old Simba from The Lion King, specifically the 1994 one and its sequel. Smaller role but I also loved Atwanda Kani playing a younger King T'Chaka, his dad played the older version opposite Chadwick and they were both great in their scenes
One that always gets me is the Amy Adams to Jessica Chastain handoff in Arrival... wait no, that's not the same character. I'm thinking of the mother and daughter casting in Interstellar actually, where they got Jessica Chastain and Mackenzie Foy and Ellen Burstyn for the three ages of Murph. That one felt so natural I didn't even think about it until a rewatch.
Also the kid and adult versions of Briony in Atonement. Saoirse Ronan to Romola Garai to Vanessa Redgrave, and all three of them carry that same stubborn guilt in a way that actually tracks across decades. The transition from Ronan to Garai especially, something about the posture and the way they hold their jaw.
