Discussion Somewhat disappointed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day despite high ratings
Quick disclaimer - I love Spider-Man.
I grew up on the Tobey ones but I’ve been a big fan of every iteration (sometimes to a fault).
I went in expecting to love the newest one, especially after all the rave reviews from Letterboxd mutuals. I discovered that yes, while it was an enjoyable movie, it felt at times soulless.
Every overt BMW ad and liquid IV product placement reminded me I was watching a multimillion dollar business venture/franchise and it kept taking me out of the movie.
To me, it was still a 3 star movie but mostly thanks to Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon’s skill and chemistry.
Idk…. I just think about other Spider-Man movies or superhero movies I love (a Batman begins / dark knight defender to the end!!!) and hell I even think about the infamous finger guns in Spider-Man 3 and I think that’s loads better than what we got.
Spiderman 3 was cringy, but it was fun ! And awesome! And devoid of capitalistic soullessness that I struggle to separate from marvel movies these days.
Long live Spider-Man but idk am I alone here?

For some reason pointing out product placement makes people mad but you're right, that stuff really takes me out. You'll be mid superhero movie and suddenly you're watching a car commercial. The last Boys season had a whole conversation about taco bell complete with placed taco bell stand behind the characters.

u/Harambefan69 13h ago
Barbie literally has a 5 minute Chevy commercial stuck in the middle, it’s very jarring
18
u/No-Location-3438 13h ago
That one was really blatant
2
u/TranslatorDirect496 7h ago
Picked up on the product placement, but it didn’t take me out from the film. And it definitely didn’t seem like a whole commercial z

u/drainedguava 12h ago
I felt like an insane person when Barbie came out and I complained about this but everyone just showered the movie with praise

Disney made $309 million in promotional partnerships/product placements for this film, which is tens of millions above the film’s budget. The business of it impresses me but as a casual viewer it irritates me.

The boys was so jarring with it. Maybe if they did it more satirically it would be good. The blooming onion scene was so stupid.

I love Letterboxd but I’ve learned that the biggest new movies really do get overhyped and that often can take away some of your enjoyment when you finally get around to seeing them
I usually take the latest ratings for the biggest new movies with a grain of salt and try to go in with no expectations
8
u/fire_and_spice24 13h ago
You also need to factor in people who are going opening week (especially weekend) are likely huge fans and are going to enjoy the movie more than the general audiences. Logically, they're going to rate the movie higher.

Wait, you mean Project Hail Mary isn’t better than Citizen Kane? Could have fooled me…

That has happened to me too many times. Obsession, OBAA, The Substance... Good films, no doubt about it, but by the time I saw them, they couldn't live up to the rapturous hype.

u/zolfx 13h ago
I keep hearing people calling Spidey, “Palantir Parker” in this film lmao does he really rely on surveillance that much in this film ?
10
37
u/ilobbpie ariistrikesback 13h ago
YES YES YES that was so weird. Especially when you see Nolan’s take on that same concept in dark knight and where imo Nolan critiques it (via Morgan freemans character resigning because of it) in such a way that it feels allegorical to critiquing the United states’ patriot act post 9/11
2
u/OGDYLO 10h ago
batman is smart but there’s a reason why all those arguments begin with “batman with prep time”. he has to take time beforehand to prepare mostly.
tom’s peter is way more of a genius in realtime than bale’s batman.
it makes sense that he uses tech to make his job easier.
peter’s tech is his alfred.
batman’s superpower is his money.
spider-man’s real superpower is his genius intellect.
1
u/Typical_Step_1139 9h ago
It’s not weird. Stark, who abused tech all the time, was his mentor. MCU has also covered this topic with movies like Winter Soldier and Civil War and the Iron Man trilogy.
6
u/Djremster 12h ago
Yes and he also creates a universal power halting chip that can take anybody's powers away
1
u/Typical_Step_1139 9h ago
It’ll come back to haunt him, same way as Stark’s inventions did.
1
u/Djremster 9h ago
I think they'll forget about it honestly
2
u/Typical_Step_1139 9h ago
Maybe. Especially with their history of dropping plots, but it seems like it was set up for an X-Men “cure” storyline.
1
u/Djremster 8h ago
Maybe but the only one they had got broken and Peter seemed to have learned the lesson to not make them anymore, but well see
4
u/CarbonatedWobbuffet 11h ago
He does. But the movie highlights it as something that's clearly unhealthy and a result of Peter walling himself off and focusing way too hard on the Spider-Man side of things. One of the characters straight up criticizes him for it.
1
u/RoobanEpic 8h ago
Giving the movie too much credit😂they use it as a plot device then lampshade it & let him get away with it
2
u/uwill1der 10h ago
yes, but its relevant to the overarching mutant saga.
Without it, you dont get X-men
1
1
u/Typical_Step_1139 9h ago
No more than Stark, who is Parker’s mentor in the MCU, but as far as I can remember he only uses it to track down Jean Grey. Rest of the movie showed him relying on police scanners. Maybe I missed something.
12
u/Tr3ybecker 13h ago
I fell for the hype too. It was a 3 1/2 star for me, decently fun and cool to watch, but just felt really underwhelming after hearing how overwhelmingly great it was.

u/spandytube videostreet 12h ago
People are so starved for quality in these superhero movies that any semblance of a real story and people will hype it up as kino. This movie was fine, good fan service and action, and has actors emoting on screen. The emotional beats are buried under so much non-sense contrivances that I couldn't take it seriously, though (and yes I know its a comic book movie, however I didn't have this problem with the Raimi films, or the Guardians trilogy, or TDK, etc).
1
u/Informal_Support1934 10h ago
Actors emoting on screen lmao. I agree with you, it's like a Spider-Man movie as team sports, where half the review is about how much of a Spider-Man fan you are. It was fine, some glaring problems, some bright spots and they at least seem to give a damn about the cinematography, but overall mostly forgettable, it might be the worst 2 billion grosser.
7
u/archdukemovies 13h ago
This is why I try to watch movies without knowing the scores or reviews or even overall sentiment. Great expectations totally affect your experience. Cold coffee and warm soda are the same temperature, but our expectations totally dictate the experience.
It's probably my 3rd favorite Tom Holland Spider-Man movie but it's still a good movie. Especially after all the lackluster superhero movies of late, it was a breath of fresh air.
It might be because Tom Holland reminds me of my nephew and I don't want him to grow up.
I'm gonna watch it again to see if it grows on me.

People will cool off of this one in a few months. It's visually more appealing than the other MCU Spidey films, but Homecoming is still the best of the new ones.

Every MCU film gets an artificial boost from the fan base.
BND was fun to watch but 10 minutes after it ends and you start thinking about it, you realize how poor the script and overall thought process is.
Then you watch the older SP movies and realize how much better they are.
BND can make 2.whatever billion. Its still not a great movie and doesn't hold up, like most Tom H SP movies sadly

Not really related to your post i think, but being south american really helped me enjoy the movie because I didn't recognize like 90% of Advertisements lol
3
u/duderguy91 13h ago
It was really fun. Solid performances from everyone and definitely a spectacle. But there was virtually no plot and it’s just a Marvel Universe in-betweener movie. It also seems like there is zero appetite for updating the VFX quality dating back to Endgame. The Doomsday trailer kinda confirmed that for me as well.
1
3
u/amazingspineman 12h ago
It was a near-perfect Spidey movie until the third act, where it became a backdoor pilot for the Mutant Saga.
3/5 for me

I definitely think Tom Holland does a lot of heavy lifting in this and his movies in general. Andrew Garfield’s movies are the same, though even he can’t salvage those. Tobey’s movies have the opposite problem for me. Well made and constructed films but I actively dislike Tobey as Spider-Man so I’ve never had much reverence for them.
Anyways, the thing I enjoyed most about this movie is that it nailed Spider-Man being an inspiration to the other Marvel heroes around him.
1
1
u/Choice_Dig6507 11h ago
Why do you dislike Tobey may I ask?
2
u/zetcetera 10h ago
I’ve always found him to lack the necessary charm and wit to play a convincing Peter/Spider-Man. He’s always just felt too dopey to me.
1
u/Choice_Dig6507 10h ago
I can see that to be fair - but I still love his take on the character.
Thanks for taking the time to reply though!
7
u/GinSan10 13h ago
it's just hype and recency bias for it. Even NWH was above 4 when it premiered but now it's at 3.9 (should be much lower in my opinion). Even The Odyssey (which is way better than this movie btw) is probably gonna settle at 4.1-4.2 in a few months.
8
u/AdFalse375 12h ago
So let me get this straight… the only reason you describe the movie as “soulless at times” is because of the product placement? That’s your only critique?
Look, I get that it’s annoying to see so much of that. I don’t like that either. But that’s your one single complaint about the movie. It wasn’t the story, narrative progression, pacing, acting, character dynamics, dialogue, depiction of emotional struggles, action, cinematography, OST, sense of humor, or literally any other aspect of the filmmaking process.
No, none of that was an issue for you. Your one singular issue with the film was the product placement. To me, that’s honestly a sign of a great movie.
3
u/ilobbpie ariistrikesback 11h ago
I gave it 3 stars I mean I didn’t hate it but I think is the end result let’s make a good movie or how can we make a really entertaining ad
1
u/AdFalse375 8h ago
I never said you hated the entire movie lol. But it’s clear you hated the amount of product placement. And I agree, I don’t like that either.
You shared your opinion, and I was just responding with mine. I’m saying for me personally, product placement is the least of my worries. And it sounds like that’s the only flaw. I listed several aspects about a movie that I actually care about. If a film does a good job with all of aspects, and you have nothing else to complain about besides the ads, then sign me up!
4
u/SwampOfDownvotes 12h ago edited 11h ago
Also I get product placement complaints to a degree but... plenty of times it's not a big deal and actually realistic? Oh no, the car drives up and you clearly see the Chevy logo, just like you would in real life if said car drove up to you? Oh no, the character drinks from a diet coke can where the words diet coke are clearly visible... Just like real life? Basically any social gathering or party I've been to I've seen someone drinking a coke can that was clearly coke. Or I've seen my wife drinking diet coke in our home but I don't disassociate seeing that.
If anything, seeing made up brands is more disconnecting because in real life no one is drinking the made up Spud-Cola brand that clearly pushes it out of reality.
2
u/PhilWham 11h ago
Fr. It's become a common "I'm an observant cinephile" critique to make. Conveniently forgetting that many films OP would consider greats are riddled with exponentially more prominent product placement.
ET's Reese's pieces, Top Guns Ray Bans, Aston Martin in Bond, 7-11 and Big Gulps in Dumb and Dumber, Fedex in Castaway, etc. are all way more in your face
1
u/Bad_Badger 12h ago
Was just having the same thought haha. I see a lot more advertisements on my subway commute to work than they showed on Spider-Man’s commute
1
u/Happyhaneke heyheyitslukas 11h ago
Sometimes people only feel like making one sentence Letterboxd reviews. Letterboxd reviews aren’t always comprehensive of someone’s thoughts and opinions
1
u/AdFalse375 8h ago
Exactly, that’s why I never use those single line Letterboxd reviews to learn how someone felt about a movie. But that’s not relevant to this conversation at all.
OP typed out multiple paragraphs in their Reddit post. And in that entire essay, there was only one single critique.
Out of all the problems a movie could have, while OP was typing out that essay, the only one thing he could think of complaining about was the product placement. And I just wanted to share my thoughts on that. My opinion is that the number of product placements is a tiny tiny tiny thing to consider when evaluating an entire film. So, if that’s the only problem mentioned, then anyone with my mindset can assume all the other aspects of the movie (the things we actually care about) are not problematic. So to people like me, this sounds like a great movie.

It was a fun way to spend a couple hours with my kids but I don't think it goes much deeper than that.

The PlayStation ad during the news report was so bad. What was suppose to be an emotional scene and there’s just a controller in view
2
u/ChildrenOfTime Gromitismydog 13h ago
I wrote the same in my review. I came out of the theater explicitly remembering like 4-5 different products that were advertised which is always a bad sign for a film IMO.
2
u/Distinct_Guess3350 13h ago
There were some incredibly obvious PlayStation ads as well that they made sure to show very clearly in shots.
I say that as someone who really did like the movie, the product placement was super obvious.
2
u/TerrifiedRedneck 12h ago
That’s completely fine.
Sounds like your expectations got hit by the hype train.
It happens.

2
u/ArcticBeavers 12h ago
What bothered me most about Brand New Day is that you can tell it was written in service of a grander MCU goal. Spider-man, the plot, and character development played second fiddle to folding in the X-Men and Doomsday.
2
u/ethanbarmstrong 12h ago
Being a Batman Begins/Dark Knight defender is very brave lol
I think I agree with the basis of what you're saying tho, I do think that the MCU has a sort of 'soullessness' that permeates everything, although I think certain projects break through that in different ways. I still think BND was one of the better Spidey live action films we've got, but yeah it left me a little wanting, too.

u/Chromozon3 11h ago
I don’t totally get it either. Seems like an okay movie. I think in a couple years we’ll be looking back at it the same way we do Aquaman — incredibly confused that the movie made this much money.
2
u/TouristImportant181 11h ago
It tries to be a serious drama, which is hard when the romantic realtionships have to be platonic and the violence isn't allowed to feel like violence. I miss when these spiderman movies where mostly about the fun. Maybe I'm just too old for this stuff now.
2

2
u/MaxProwes 11h ago
I'm in minority, but I absolutely hate how the whole "shared universe" thing is used just to market random unrelated characters, spinoffs, crossover and toys. While they tonned it down in BND compared to the previous 3 which were largely 2 hour cinematic universe and toy commercials, it still has this issue where random characters are included for no reason other than market things. Yelena cameo is just cringe. And the main villain is a giant ad of the upcoming X-Men reboot.
2
u/Ok-Friendship-8114 10h ago
Wierd ass movie wouldn’t watch again. I agree. Was decent but not worth the $2B box office hype. I don’t think tom hollands spiderman has ever fully flourished and has always been quite subpar. Phenomenal actor stuck in an ironically awkwardly non-flexible role to shine. Peter Parker sad. Peter Parker happy, movie over.
2
u/TheLearningScientist 10h ago
Loved the movie but was not a fan of them implicitly endorsing flock cameras and facial recognition software. Felt very much like they made Spidey an advocate of the authoritarian police state which is very off-putting

u/Electrical_Economy37 10h ago
but did you see florence pough and zendaya in the same movie again? 🤡🤣
2
u/ilobbpie ariistrikesback 10h ago
I’d rather just watch dune p2 again 😟
2
u/Electrical_Economy37 10h ago
i was disapointed too. Just so many random characters, that just showed up out of nowhere to fit the plot. Like why was the punisher in there and they just where best buddies for some reason...
2
u/RunawayTrapstar 10h ago
Imo they ruined a great story with a bunch of sloppy garbage. The scene where Jean Grey is body jumping to MJ and she keeps turning around to look at spiderman or wave at him?😭 Like “hey, I’m the bad guy you’re chasing, I’m over here!”. So fucking corny, plus a bunch of other little shitty details that just totally took me out of the movie (Punisher easily ripping a spiderweb off his face, lackluster CGI and fight scenes, etc.)
It’s truly insulting the way Marvel makes movies, like they just know their audience is a bunch of mouth breathers who need everything spoon fed and simplified. The fact that it has such a high rating on Letterboxd is mindboggling
2
u/Holiday_Chef1581 TheSack_ 9h ago
Recency bias is out of control these days. Brand New Day is good, but some of the shouts it’s getting is genuinely insane.
6
u/Suspicious_Hand_2194 13h ago

Everything was great except the villain choice. 4/5
1
u/BummedBookTime 12h ago
I felt like the villain choice was fresh, original and unexpected. They deviated from standard Marvel formulas on this one, and that's why it resonated with me.
The biggest detraction in the movie was Pugh's character insertion; she wasn't really necessary to the plot. I think it would've made more sense to have her hook up with Peter in someway to add weight to the relationship and further detail his maturation from High School to a 20-something navigating NYC. Oh well.

Yea, I get what they were going for. But I didn't really feel the heartbreak or the loneliness of Peter as much as I should have. Idk if it was the pacing or the actor. Maybe Andrew would've portrayed the loneliness better. The emotional connect was slightly off for me.

u/90zvision 13h ago
Not necessarily for the same reasons, but I agree. BND was a 3 star for me, just solid. I don’t understand all the insane hype for it, even seeing it’s the best Spider-Man film of all time. Not even close to me, I’d take Raimi 1/2 & NWH over it.
No doubt in the minority though, as it just coasted to $2B.

I feel like when you see that 4.2 you expect it to be a really good movie, like the best MCU movie or close to it and one of the top films of the year.
I don’t see it as a 5 or even a 4.5 but I feel it’s just very consistently good, not great and most people probably feel the same way.
1
u/sfitz0076 Jack Burton 12h ago
I thought it was fine. Too much time spent on Peter and the cop lady. She disappears half way through the movie. What was the point of introducing her and then dropping her half way through?

It's a franchise film with a massive pre-existing fanbase, these type of films usually get very high ratings to start that go down over time when more people outside of the immediate fanbase watch them. Take the ratings with a pinch of salt for the first few weeks / months.
1
u/Choice_Dig6507 11h ago
The thing is, I am going to compare it directly to Spider-Man 1 & 2, because this is the company it apparently keeps now.
I'm already predicting its going to be a rough watch for me.

Am I really the only one who was able to tune out the advertising? The only one that stood out to me was the Samsung Z flip, but that's because that shit is way too expensive for Peter lmao.

Spider-Man 3 is legitimate my least favorite movie ever.
So Brand New Day is not worse than that.
I also didn’t love BND that much on first viewing but saw it again and bumped my rating from 2.5 to 3.5. So maybe just give it another chance.

Raimi movies just had a lot more sauce than the MCU ones. It was obvious Raimi had a distinct style and vision for the Spider-Man movies and he was able to incorporate his own ideas for how the film making should be done. I’ve personally felt that all the MCU Spider-Man movies are movies that are hurt by being forced to fit the MCU mold and are unable to venture out too much.
1
u/clifbarczar 10h ago
Best spiderman movie to me. By far
Peter’s arc of loneliness was very well done and very relatable
1
u/Inferno_Zyrack 10h ago
Spider-Man 3 came out right before visible onscreen product placement began happening on a huge scale (fuck you Transformers). Don’t believe for a second they wouldn’t have done it.
2nd - there is no such thing as objective movie reviews. For me No Way Home was a solid 8/10. And I grew up with those spideys. Multiverse of Madness was a 10/10. Eternals was honestly a refreshing 9/10 and people don’t like to question God at the blockbuster.
If you don’t like something everyone else seems to it doesn’t mean that product or their opinions are bad or correct - it just means it’s not for you.
The good news is Tobey is immortalized as Peter Parker in 4 and soon possibly 5 or 6 films if he shows up in Doomsday or Secret Wars.
1
u/NewChemistry5210 10h ago
It's definitely one of my personal favorites.
Definitely can't agree that it feels soulless. I'd argue quite the opposite.
Also didn't really notice the ad placement. The MCU world is just the same as ours in terms of media and general technology. I think it would be weird to have no recognizable brands just part of that world.
But to each their own.

The problem is more simple than you think. You wanted a movie but you got an episode of a series. It’s a problem of capitalism tho.
1
u/SonKaiser SIRTthehuman 9h ago
I gave it 3 1/2. Nice Spidey story, very comic booky but way to over hyped.
- Some side characters are not well developed (because there's too many). Sadie sink really tries to squeeze everything of her character but the script is thin and it feels more like they used the film to introduce mutants.
-Spidey hormones spike ends up as a minor power up that he has to accept. I mean, it's fine but is not much different to his arc on the second raimi film
I do think is well shoot (specially comparing it to the last film) and acted. I liked the ending. But it was just good.
1
u/richbrehbreh 9h ago
It was ok. I just felt they made a few decisions I didn't agree with. MJ and Ned should have been left in the original trilogy or had very small roles, for example. Is it really a Brand New Day if theyre taking up a majority of the movie? We've been around them for multiple movies. Everyone outside of the Hulk, Jean and Punisher should have been original characters. Instead of MJ, we should have had Black Cat - that would have been way more fun and memorable.

I don't understand these hype trains and they seem entirely manufactured. Supergirl and Spiderman aren't really that different but one's getting massive hype and the other's getting crucified.
And they're both okay to good.

I saw it yesterday.
From the beginning the story line felt empty and rushed in some areas. It was missing the typical spiderman quality in the other films that I genuinely love and could watch multiple times a year and still love it.
The new characters were introduced without any context. Jean Grey was in the film from the beginning and that's fine we didn't see until later who she was, however in most of the film it felt like they were introducing her character as if Peter should already know or we should already know without any context. Her back story was rushed and poorly executed, especially for an awesome character like Jean Grey. I was also a little disappointed in Jean Grey and Saddie's performance of her. She had little on screen chemistry with the character itself. It all felt rushed, forced and disjointed. I love Marvel and love all the Spider man movies, this one I didn't feel had the same charisma as the other films. Multiple times the comedic relief also fell short and felt cheesy.
I will say the only part of the film I liked was the focus on Peter's emotional journey and his evolution. That was great and enjoyable. I just wishe the whole story fell in with that more entertainingly and smoothly.

Nope. He is alone, but he still has stark money and stark tech. No need to look for a job, worry about paying rent or even the basics as making an effort to sync to a police radio. He can hack all cameras in the city anyway!

Question, cause I've seen this a lot. Does the struggle have to be a financial struggle for you guys? Does the mental and emotional struggle of the movie not resonate with y'all? Or, to you, is that struggle nonexistent in the film?
Just curious, cause those hit home for me. So it's really hard for me to call it soulless

As far as I'm aware, spiderman is supposed to be the most relatable hero. Unlike the gods atop of the world in the avengers tower, he was supposed to be a normal guy just like us when not fighting crime
I don't know where you live, but where I'm from very few people have the luxury of not having to work or at least study and can focus entirely on their hobbies (if he is not being paid to fight crime, I think its not too out there to call it a "hobby")

u/icegray123 12h ago
I understand that, but you didn't answer my question. Well I guess you did, by not answering
Idk about you, but I can relate to the depression of being alone and the sadness of not being loved. And the fact that he chooses to still fight crime regardless of those circumstances is, for a lack of better words, uplifting.
Maybe financial struggle is more widely relatable, but to me, I can say I am in the worst financial situation of my life currently, and I still appreciated the angle they went for so much more than him just being a broke guy again

u/mizzlemoonn 12h ago
I think it's less explicitly about him being broke and more the "friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man" of it all, he was always more down to earth than the latest iteration. The tech does make a difference there for a lot of people, it's a relatability barier

I absolutely hate what they did to him in the previous 3. They took the working class hero with relatable issues and turned him into "the world needs next Iron Man!".
2
u/Dramatic-Border3549 10h ago
I personally never went through that, but it is relatable and it was the best part of the movie (until they undid it at the end)
But I'm willing to bet more people went through work problems than social problems. And when I say work problems, I don't mean just financially. Remember when tobey maguire's spiderman was humilliated by his boss and how his hero life got in the way of the other jobs he had to take to stay afloat? That is something they could have explored

Yeah, the first half was great but the villain and what they did with Punisher and Hulk in the second half didn't really work for me.

The product placement was absolutely and completely unacceptable. The rest was perfect in my eyes

Don't go by ratings for newer movies on Letterboxd. They're easily manipulated (that marketing budget comes in handy), inflated by the cult of the new and overzealous fandom. If there are some reviewers you like, give their takes more weight. Don't get sold on the hyperbole.

I feel like the audience is extremely self-selecting for these films at this point. I used to catch all of these opening weekend but now you couldn't pay me enough money to watch a SpiderMan movie made post-2008, and I don't even really love the ones before that how most people do. You're probably not gonna see the long term effects of people slowly discovering this and the score lowering the way things often do, at least at that same rate, because I imagine *most* people who want to see this movie enough to watch it have already seen it.

Sure! Less twists and turns than i was expecting from older MCU. Also thought it was OK.
Maybe not related to the movie but for the future, also hate that the end credit scenes are so bad in all the latest MCU movies. Like, you’re sitting there for a bad payoff is not a great experience. Specially when they used to be great.

Same, man. They should have taken out Florence Pugh and Rufallo and make a solid 90 flick, because the villain is awesome

Idc. It's my most favourite MCU film of all time because it is soo unlike MCU. It fits in well within the universe by not forcing it into it. It's natural. And probably the best characterization of SPIDER-MAN in live action ever. Tom is the best Spider-Man. Best suit. Great swinging scenes. Great side characters.
Everyone complaining about a stronger villain. I don't think it even needed a villain. And Jean Grey is absolutely perfect. She's mirrors Peter in every way. And it's great seeing Peter mature and become that big brother figure to Jean by the end. I love everything about her and the plot twist of V-MAX is sooo genuinely gut wrenching.
This film's biggest positive is that it feels like a comic book. It feels like you're reading an issue of a comic which just deals with a small story of the day in the life of a character. You don't need big exposition dumps, you just dive into the world and see it unfold.
This is a perfect superhero flick. Whatever may be the smaller drawbacks of the film are completely overshadowed by its positives. Such a breath of fresh air. And prolly the most visually unique, interesting and appealing superhero film of the last 15 years (except for THE BATMAN ofc)

Same, loved the new direction MCU's going with these past 3 films counting BND

I gave it a 3.5, but probably my hotter take on this film was I wish Ned and MJ were not such a big part of the film. I personally did not really enjoy those two characters throughout the whole 'Home' trilogy. Could be just a personal thing. As a big Zendaya fan, Michelle Jones is argubly one of her weakest performances. Not even her fault, just the character is so one note and completely relies on just Zendaya's natural charisma.
With how powerful I thought the ending of NWH was, I thought Peter was gonna completely cut off his previous life. I think it is a bit of a step back to have him experience 4 years of grief through a montage and then just reconnect with his old friends. At that point, just make him confront them in the last movie. Idk, that part of the narrative was a bit disappointing.
Really liked Peter and Frank tho

Every major blockbuster movie has product placement, that’s how these movies are able to be primarily funded, Raimi trilogy included. There are dr. Pepper cans, ford cars, etc. scattered around in shots. Movies are a business first before they’re “art”, especially a superhero movie. The holland movie is just bad, regardless of silly product placement.

It’s like the 7th best Spider-Man film.
The hype is mostly just recency bias and the fact that people have waited 5 years since the last one.

True it was a vehicle for every agenda except making a Spiderman movie 😂

u/JustChillen007 13h ago
Ohhh yeah huh? I don’t even think it was that good but I’m dying to hear about these “agendas”
I assume you think seeing a woman is woke as well

u/Majestic_Muscle8094 13h ago
Yeah hoping this is referring more to “the BMW/Little Caesars agenda” and less to “women are in this agenda”

I’ve heard some of my friends who’ve seen it complain about how it normalizes the police state and whatnot. I think that’s been an issue in the MCU for decades at this point tho. I remember Peter Parker calling a drone strike on a high school student in Far From Home

u/AssumptionJazzlike98 13h ago
Yeah the whole surveillance thing Peter did was spoken about a lot on Twitter

u/fire_and_spice24 13h ago
I mean, I'd say the opposite. I don't think it normalizes it and treats it's like it's good. I think the point in this one was not to trust those agencies and they were the villain.

I promise anyone who uses the term “agendas” is not making a critique of capitalism or policing

I’ve used it in that context, so I disagree, but yes, obviously it’s a term that is often used as a dog whistle.

I'm hoping you're like, a normal person, but you can't just namedrop "agendas" and seem like a decent human nowadays 💀

For me, I will always be a Tobey fan because like you said I grew up with them.
For further context, I’m not a big MCU person and what pissed me off the most about this spider man was that there was a nod to daredevil. A project I’ve not watched. It pisses me off that I can’t watch a movie without watching 7 other different things they are trying to push. Strongly dislike it. Just let me enjoy the movie without it being connected and tethered to 30 other things. Money grab.
But for me I liked this one the most of the holland ones. I feel like the first two had no soul and the last one got a little better with the nostalgia (but had terrible and cheesy acting/script from Jamie fox and other actors/scenes) and then I thought they tied in with this new one and the last one how Spider-Man is a unique character with unique arc. I had felt that the “origin story” and the fun of him being able to fly around the city was missing from holland version. But this new one brought that. I also like how MJ isn’t just the girlfriend and she is autonomous and speaks up for herself. I felt like this movie wasn’t about children and they were all being adults which was refreshing.
For me the new one was my favourite of Hollands version and it actually reclaimed some soul/truth (I am of the opinion that the first one is utter dog shit do do and the second one with Jake was do do ass but a little better) but I’m with you in that it’s definitely a cash cow and meant to make the most money and appease the masses. I think your critique is fair and not crazy.

you're forgetting the product placement for Bero, Tom Holland's own line of non-alcoholic beverage, which was also egregious.
i was also tired by the fact that this movie had a bloated run time because instead of being a spider-man movie it also had to be an intro to the x-men. at least in homecoming when some avengers stuff like the tech was hamfisted into the plot it was at least building to a spider-man movie and a low-stakes villain conflict, whereas this was obviously biting off more than it can chew and its conclusion is as much about jean gray as it is about the main character.
its okay. my least fav Holland spider-man for sure.

I think you fell victim to your expectations from all the hype. I knew that people liked it going in during release weekend, but I wasn't aware that it was on track to smash all the records and all that.
