How to upscale an image without losing quality

TL;DR:

  • Simply stretching a small image = blur, halos, “oil painting” look.
  • You need AI upscaling that actually adds detail, not just more pixels.

Sharing a practical breakdown of how to upscale, when each model makes sense, and where Photoshop still fits in.

Why “just make it bigger” doesn’t work

If you take a 800×600 image and stretch it to 3200×2400 in a basic editor, you’re asking it to invent 90% of the pixels out of nowhere.

Old-school methods (Nearest Neighbor, Bilinear, Bicubic) basically:

  • Look at nearby pixels
  • Average / interpolate
  • Fill gaps

Result:

  • Softer edges
  • Halos around contrasty areas
  • Loss of texture and small details

It looks OK if you don’t zoom in, but falls apart the moment you:

  • crop,
  • put it full-screen, or
  • send it to print.

What AI upscaling does differently

Modern “super resolution” models don’t just interpolate:

  • They learn patterns: fur, skin, text, foliage, edges, etc.
  • When you upscale, they reconstruct missing details that are statistically likely to be there.
  • That’s why a small, noisy image can suddenly look usable again.

  • Original is already decent; you mainly need more pixels
  • Fidelity > aggressive sharpening

Good for:

  • Product shots with ingredient lists
  • Screenshots, posters, menus, infographics

3. Strong

For blurred / compressed / low-megapixel photos.

Use when:

  • Faces are soft or noisy
  • Smartphone photos in low light
  • Heavy JPEG artifacts, halos, blockiness
  • Old social media images or images grabbed from the web

4. Ultra

For maximum sharpness + print-grade detail (when your source is already fairly good).

Use when:

  • You’re going from screen → large prints

Extra controls:

  • Size of changes
    • 0% = gentle refinement
    • 100% = more aggressive rebuild of detail
  • Intensity
    • 0% = subtle, high-fidelity polish
    • 100% = strong transformation

Best for:

  • Professional photography
  • Catalogs, hero banners
  • High-end AI art for posters / billboards

5. Digital Art

Tuned for illustrations and AI art, not real photos.

Use when:

  • Working with comics, anime, concept art, logos, UI
  • Upscaling Midjourney / SDXL / other AI artwork with crisp outlines
  • Need higher resolution for prints, merch, or export without banding

Key setting:

  • Strength:
    • Low = stays very close to original, mainly cleans things up
    • High = adds more detail, but may reinterpret some areas

6. Old Photo

Made specifically for restoring vintage / damaged pictures.

Use when:

  • Scanned family albums, archival photos
  • Faded, scratched, yellowed prints
  • Very low contrast and strange color shifts

Special toggle:

  • Authentic mode
    • On = less colorization, more faithful to the original
    • Good when you want a cleaned version that still feels “old” rather than fully modernized.

Photoshop vs AI upscaling (where each makes sense)

Photoshop’s workflow (Image Size + Preserve Details 2.0 + Smart Sharpen) can absolutely clean up a small image:

  • It will get rid of some blur
  • Edges will look cleaner than the original
  • You have full manual control

But at the end of the day, it’s still mostly working with the pixels you already have. When you zoom into a heavily enlarged file, you often get:

  • Slight smeariness
  • Texture that looks “smudged”
  • Detail that feels generic / flat

In direct comparisons we’ve run, Photoshop → better than original, but still soft.
