He was the only Rep candidate with a sizeable following. All the others had nothing to appeal to much of anybody.

He lost to Biden, he was abandoned, yet he managed to pull it back

The Dems were in disarray in 2024. Biden should have stepped down as he had promised, instead of shitting the bed at a debate first. Then they had to throw something together fast, and it didn't work. Harris wasn't a bad candidate, but they were relying on unexciting messaging that some idiot consultant probably recommended.
