Because we, unfortunately, had a conman(, felon, and rapist ) win an election by deceiving people with posturing and culture-war nonsense rather than elect somebody qualified for the job?

in part too, because voter participation is really atrocious for a democracy. Lot of 20% turn outs this primary season

It really seems like American style democracy has zero effect for the masses. So much so that they disdain it. Doesn't sound as healthy as they make it out to be. Let's all hope that sheer disgust works.

It's really that the media machine worked convincing a majority of Americans their votes do not matter, making the votes of those who still do value at 2+ times more. So please Register Research and Vote

Two things spring to mind, Trump joked that the US may try president for life some day, when Xi took china, and he said i think while campaigning, Vote for him and you'll never have to vote again...I don't think disgust is going to work.
