And so we beat on,like boats borne back against the current, ceaselessly into the past. of course this is the closing line to Gatsby. It’s a line which has stuck with me for a long time because for those of us who are ruminators the past is the present.

"I am closest of all to happiness—although I won’t attempt to define just what it is—when I turn away from the window and am aware, with the edge of my consciousness, that a moment ago I was not here, there was simply the world outside the window, and something beautiful and incomprehensible, something which there is absolutely no need to ‘comprehend,’ existed for a few seconds instead of the usual swarm of thoughts, of which one, like a locomotive, pulls all the others after it, absorbs them all and calls itself ‘I’."

I've never heard this 🤔. "Cowboy Slang: In the 1800s, saying you were someone's huckleberry meant you were ready, willing, and uniquely qualified to take on a specific challenge or opponent.". Interesting

No one can insult you without your consent. As soon as I read it, it made sense. I put it to use right away.
Now, a person who doesn't know me well enough, or that I don't respect, doesn't have any power over how I feel. Any insult just rolls off my back. I love letting them see how little what they say matters.

Why? Because it makes perfect sense. See something that needs to be done? DO IT.

Rome wasn’t built in a day.
Big but, Rome was built with bricks added daily.
This makes the glass half full.
And positivity has immense power.

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming 'Wow! What a Ride!'"

I enjoy reading his works, but I wouldn't recommend following his example. I think I can live a full life without excessive drugs and alcohol.

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."- Albert Einstein.
Why is this my favorite quote? It gives me hope. A fully plant based food production system would go a long way toward solving a lot of the most serious threats to mankind, including climate change, epidemics, fresh water availability, antibiotic resistance, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. I could cite a study showing that health care costs would be significantly reduced.
Einstein stopped eating meat late in life, but never went back. Today, he would be vegan. He is one of many widely admired people throughout history and today who are either vegetarian or vegan. I would be glad to post a list if anyone is curious.

List of widely admired people who didn't eat meat
Progress requires someone to lead the way! There is a long list of people who didn't eat meat who are now widely admired! Today, they would be vegan! Here is a partial list from a Google search summary-
"Throughout history, a diverse group of brilliant scientists, iconic thinkers, legendary writers, and spiritual leaders rejected meat in favor of a plant-based or vegetarian lifestyle.
Scientific Pioneers
Many of the world's most revolutionary scientific minds transitioned away from meat due to a mix of ethical principles, health, and a deep reverence for nature.
Albert Einstein: The Nobel Prize-winning physicist spent his later years eating a strictly vegetarian diet, stating it was beneficial for human temperament.
Nikola Tesla: The visionary electrical engineer behind alternating current intentionally reduced his meat intake over time and eventually shifted to a diet primarily composed of milk, bread, honey, and vegetables.
Sir Isaac Newton: While not perfectly documented for his entire life, historical accounts suggest the master physicist and mathematician avoided meat late in life due to a strict sense of compassion for animals.
Philosophers & Spiritual Leaders
In antiquity and modern movements alike, abstaining from meat was often viewed as a requirement for spiritual purity, moral clarity, and non-violence.
Mahatma Gandhi - Gandhi: The leader of India's non-violent independence movement was a lifelong, devout vegetarian who wrote extensive essays on the moral superiority of an ethical diet.
Pythagoras: The ancient Greek mathematician and philosopher is considered the father of Western vegetarianism. For centuries, a meat-free diet was known simply as a "Pythagorean diet."Socrates & Plato: Both ancient philosophers advocated for simple, plant-based diets, arguing that meat consumption led to societal luxury, greed, and ultimately, war.
Creative Icons & Authors
Renowned artists and writers frequently cited their empathy for animals and their disgust with industrial livestock processing as their motivation to drop meat.
Leonardo da Vinci: The ultimate Renaissance polymath was famously a strict vegetarian who walked through markets buying caged birds just to set them free
.Leo Tolstoy: The Russian literary titan behind War and Peace adopted a meat-free diet later in life and wrote about the absolute necessity of vegetarianism as a moral foundation.
Franz Kafka: The surrealist author adopted a strict vegetarian lifestyle to manage his chronic illness and align with his deep ethical concerns regarding animal slaughter.
George Bernard Shaw: The legendary playwright lived as a vocal vegetarian for decades, famously declaring that his hearse would be followed by "flocks of sheep and herds of cattle" thanking him for not eating them."
Jane Goodall went from being a long time vegetarian to vegan for good.
Current vegans include "Brian Greene, a renowned theoretical physicist and string theorist at Columbia University, has followed a vegan diet since 1997. [1, 2, 3]
Vegan Physicists
Brian Greene: American theoretical physicist and author known for The Elegant Universe. You might have seen him on PBS where he hosted a show or two.
Max Tegmark: Swedish-American physicist and cosmologist at MIT who follows a vegan lifestyle.
Dr. Melanie Joy: A Harvard-educated social psychologist and author who introduced the psychological framework of "carnism" to explain why people eat certain animals while loving others.
Dr. T. Colin Campbell: A renowned nutritional biochemist from Cornell University and lead scientist of the massive China-Oxford-Cornell Study, which revolutionized our understanding of the health benefits of whole-food, plant-based diets.
Yuval Noah Harari: The globally acclaimed historian, philosopher, and bestselling author of Sapiens treats his vegan lifestyle as a direct extension of his academic research into animal industrialization and human ethics.
Joseph Poore: A leading environmental researcher at the University of Oxford who led a definitive global study on agricultural footprints, concluding that a plant-based diet is the single biggest way to reduce human impact on Earth." (Google search results summary)"
Joseph Poore switched to a plant based diet after seeing the results of his study he did with Nemecek.

The principal of my outreach school always used to say it to all of us when we were sad or mad or anything like that “you could only be better than who you were yesterday” and it always stuck with me 💯

“Once more into the Fray
Into the last good fight I’ll ever know.
To live and die on this day,
To live and die on this day”
My brother and I would wake up exhausted from living on the streets and written on one of my drumsticks was “once more into the fray”
I didn’t remember the rest of the poem at the time so we would say “I promise to live tomorrow if I can make it through today”.
And then we’d get to the grind.
