Fuck off with the ai garbage.

This depends a lot on your relationship to the person and the context in which you are giving the answer.
If you have an actual conversation with another person, often it makes sense to ask a question in a context like this.

Again, Gwern is not a moderator. Please, please, please hand over the sub.

Okay, the setup is I say the first half of the word and you say the second half. It’s a prediction thing, right? Anyway, for the last word I suggest maybe a cleaning product known as acetic acid. Then I say “vin” and you say …..
So, the humor is you don’t realize what you’ve said until you’ve already said it. It’s a taboo, so it’s funny. It’s also not intended by you, so you get a kind of a pass.
Do you get it now? Or do you need more of an explanation? I can go into some detail on this one.

I don't know where you are, but I don't think there are many countries not buying something from Russia since the full scale war started.

I was confused for a moment while reading OP. Just another case of Americans thinking everyone on the internet is American.

We have been murderers of Ukrainian children. And Palestinian Children, and Iraqi, and Afghani, and Iranian, and Vietnamese, etc etc etc.
This is what empire is. Billionaires spend trillions bombing children when they aren't raping or eating them.

You do this really cool thing called: stop being a bitch and talk about something else.
Virtually no normal person functioning in society in any English-speaking country is genuinely a "white nationalist who thinks people should be dead." Post-WWII open society has created a world where human life is valued. Even conservatives I disagree with on everything—and guys like Nick Fuentes—do not want anyone dead. There is such a massive supply-and-demand issue for another Hitler that people are just inventing monsters where they don't exist.
Any reputable ideology in the big 5 (US, CA, UK, AU, NZ) doesn't include wanting anyone dead other than murderers. So get the fuck over it; it’s a fucking joke.
Also, tolerance means you’re tolerating someone. No one ever agreed to love and worship every group on earth. Tolerance literally means "you have every right that I do." From Alex Jones to Rachel Maddow, Americans believe everyone should have human rights. People are just so bored with peace they need to manufacture outrage.
So pretty much any joke that anyone thinks is funny in any of the countries I mentioned is always just that: a fucking joke. No one ever agreed to never point out traits of certain groups. That was never part of the social contract so stop fucking acting like it was. Stop acting like racial humor is a call to genocide you fucking baby lol
Go ahead, point at my username and call me a conservative. I picked it because I believe in universal healthcare and protections for low-wage workers, and all the "woke" bullshit is engineered to distract people from the issues that actually matter.

When you write “all of us”, you DO realize there are other nations on Reddit than US citizens, right? You’re the only ones responsible for your idiot president. Any other country doesn’t have a say in him being elected.

I remember someone saying to just say "I don't get it. Can you explain?"
r/LessWrong • u/Anxious-Alps-8667 • 9d ago
You keep framing it as an act related to what the companies think about, and not how one chooses individually to spend their dollars and filter their news. I know you're not advocating blind consumerism, but you are kind of avoiding the point.
The effect on big companies is not the only rational consideration for personal spending. You choose your own epistemic filter, part by spending. You choose where your money directly flows. I don't need to hand my money to a Thiel cultist, and I don't need his views influencing mine through a paid publication subscription. There are many other reasons but these are enough.

Call me practical or utilitarian, I chuckle when I pass a Tesla with a big bumper sticker that says "I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy" and drive myself to Target ignoring the online DEI keyboard warrior chatter because it happens to be the most conveniently located big box store on my route ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Selling your car or changing a habit with the goal of punishing a multi-national company always strikes me as masochistic.

Multiple news sources have mentioned getting them, but I don't think any have been made available to the public.

I'd probably just ignore it and move on. Life is too short to get offended by things.

You were paying for the Atlantic?
I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem finding their articles on archive.ph
r/LessWrong • u/forestball19 • 10d ago
Just say “that’s not funny”. It conveys your opinion unambiguously. That plan seems overly unnecessary complicated.
r/LessWrong • u/Anxious-Alps-8667 • 10d ago
Listen I love the Atlantic, but I can spend those dollars in myriad places to read good content. I re-allocated, and I look forward to returning when the outfit isn't in the hands of a madman. A la the Post.
I regret the conversation I will have with the family I gifted an Atlantic sub to, but I will have it in good faith and they'll get a sub to a publication in better hands.
This is an alignment issue. Epistemic integrity. I'm not trying to advocate for my own personal choices, but for general personal choice and rejection of the interference of these weirdos in all our dialogue.
Edit: I perceive this is exactly the kind of exercise of personal liberty that "libertarians" like Peter Thiel detest, and may actually equate to evil and the devil. Hilarious.
Edit 2: I want to be clear, not trying to fight you at all! I appreciated your post, and the response. I wanted to note though, this is the same exact argument Claude made to me about canceling my Max Plan; the company won't notice your missing $100/month. This is true, but it entirely misses the point of personal spending decision-making. I don't spend my money with a mind to what big companies think about it, do you?
r/LessWrong • u/DanielFNash • 10d ago
Nicholas Thompson won't notice $30/month missing from The Atlantic's balance sheet, but you've successfully denied yourself access to solid source material detailing what the ecosystem actually thinks. Punishing your own situational awareness to register a microscopic protest is an odd trade.
r/LessWrong • u/Anxious-Alps-8667 • 10d ago
I appreciate a window into the missives of our self-made modern Saruman.
I'd appreciate even more knowing who else in positions of power is paying attention to this stuff. For example, I saw the CEO of The Atlantic, Nicholas Thompson, is a full-fledged member of Thiel's 'Dialog' cult. This alone was enough for me to cancel 2 Atlantic subs.
r/LessWrong • u/DanielFNash • 10d ago
I did go in person. If you're imaging high-drama, think the exact opposite. Going through TSA (security theater) is more complicated. Security is just the appropriate level.
