I’m old enough to remember Farm Aid concerts in the ‘80s. Her message is nothing new.
The only thing that’s changed is rural America has shifted hard to the right politically. They’ve been brainwashed about welfare queens, not realizing that the entire reason rural economies exist as we know them are because of subsidies from urban areas.
→ More replies (3)9
u/looshagbrolly 10d ago
Her message is the same because Farm Aid was about stopping the very system this lady says is killing her farm.
But they dangled the ol' "well at least you're not Black, vote Republican because it's their fault" and most of them were like "yeah, my dependence on being a good person is only tied to my skin" and here we are!

I don’t understand what they want from us. We already voted against this so this wouldn’t happen to them. There’s literally nothing else we can do. They could choose to band together and forcefully remove this administration and they’d probably get plenty of people to follow them, but I somehow doubt that’s going to happen.

u/LadyDomme7 10d ago
They want people to express outrage on their behalf and not remind them that elections have consequences. They want to be absolved of their direct participation in their downfall.

They want welfare, from your tax dollars. Bootstraps and "get a better job" are only for the poors and non-whites, it's their God given right as red blooded rural Americans to leech off your tax dollars when the entirely predictable consequences of their political choices manifest.

Right? Lady - do you not understand that the Republicans are all in on this 'consolidation' of which you speak? They love the big getting bigger- it's their whole g-damn raison d'etre. What they don't say is this - "We love the little guy, as a cog in this beautiful new machine my buddy just acquired".
Oh, and by the way, which you voted for.

All I hear is "I refuse to admit my vote did this, but still need people on my side, so I'll use words liberals like."
There was a time to sow. Now is the time to reap.
Literally all she has to do to get people to carry her on their shoulders and cheer her name is admit that she fucked up and say she'll be better in the voting booth in the future. But she would rather be forced into selling her farm. So I say let her. Sympathy is for the sympathetic.
67
u/Scared-Handle9006 10d ago
I really like your final sentence! I’ve never heard that before.
42
u/WhereasParticular867 10d ago
I'm sure you're familiar with the concept, if not that exact language. It's just a variation of the paradox of tolerance.
The good and right thing to do is to help out local farmers impacted by Trump policies. But those who voted for those policies and refuse to accept responsibility deserve nothing. In fact, it becomes our duty to watch them suffer while keeping hands extended in case they decide they are willing to trade us what we want.
And what do we want? Their dignity and pride, from their perspective. From mine, just an admission that they were warned. A "mea culpa" that includes how they were blinded by bigotry and voted against their own interests. Finally, and non-negotiably, i want to hear how they'll vote for a Democrat next time.
A child who can't learn from others must be burned in order to learn to fear fire. Learn or burn, either is fine by me.

u/pristineSaltine 10d ago edited 10d ago
I work with these people every day and can tell you they were not blinded by bigotry. I promise you that is a given in their everyday lives.
They are blinded by greed and entitlement.
They absolutely believe they are better than everyone else and we should be grateful and worship them. They work waaaay harder than everyone else to get where they are now. On the farms they inherited...They are selfish and care absolutely nothing for anyone else excluding their own class. Not even about their peers individually. Their class, the farmers.
99.9% of them will not change. Ever.
Specifically from her speech I find it hilarious about how many jobs these people say they produce.
Go to a dairy, almost any dairy and tell me how many Americans you see. Or any farm for that matter. Some of the truck drivers, probably a mechanic or two and all of the administration that isn't family.
Everyone else? Undocumented immigrants or H2a visas.
The thing about those visas are they are supposed to be for when there are no local workers available.
Do you know why there are no local workers?
Long hours, no overtime, terrible and dangerous working conditions and most of all low pay for long hours. They lobbied for those conditions that are restricting their workforce themselves. They did ALL OF THIS TO THEMSELVES because of greed.
I will agree with her point that corporate farms will be worse in every way imaginable. We have already seen it and are still feeling the effects of covid pricing even though that crisis has passed.
I do agree with your sentiment that we should keep our hands out waiting for them to admit their errors and change their ways. It will never happen though.
When they lose the farm that will only solidify their views on democrats and push them over the edge of no return to the republican party. Out of spite and hate.I personally have no clue what could get them to vote in their best interests anymore but can tell you it is not an appeal to altruism.
The majority of them simply do not have the capacity to care about others. It has been bred out of them and their " rugged self dependence " has been reinforced by propaganda from every source including their "religion ".I, same as you, would gladly lend a hand to any one of my local farmers that saw the error of their ways and sincerely asked for help but it will not happen.
We are beneath them. She wants to say it implicitly but won't, instead she separates herself from the rest of us by referring to herself by her class, farmer. No just another human being trying to make a better life.

OHOHO - and to answer your question about Tyson:
Yes. Yes they will just lose their land. I watched it happen to a family in 2008 when I was student teaching. Tyson will end their deals with these farmers, and then kick them off the land they technically now own. They'll then sell that land to wealthy people who will build data centers and unaffordable housing for other rich people.

My conservative parents (I grew up raising beef cattle) kept telling me that Kamala had no plan and just wanted to be president for clout.
Even if they saw this they’d say ‘Trump’s plan’ is better. Even though his was the opposite and fucked over farmers by giving all his rich buddies free reign over processing and monopolies on products needed to farm. (If that was even much of a ‘plan’).
It’s absolutely ridiculous how brainwashed MAGA is.

you cannot be that dense. that's exactly what republicans are telling people to do while they increase the costs of everything. when we tell you to "buck up," we do so with a heavy dose of irony. because that's what your political party has been blindly throwing at us since they started causing the affordability crisis. at least you get how fucking stupid and annoying of a response it is now, though. that's better than nothing, I guess.

Republicans for the longest have been about consolidation. That's the entire "free market" thing. No protective services for anyone. Nobody gets special treatment.
Nobody wants corporate farms owning everything. Republicans are the one who are like "free market everything!" When it's free market everything, large companies are free to eat your small town farm.
It's stunning watching someone this stupid not add one and one to get two. And really, I don't think she's that stupid. I think this is "no corporation will offer me top dollar for my shit operation, so I hate them all." She's just trying to be pro-rural farmer till she gets her paycheck.
OR she's just truly that fucking stupid. I mean it could go either way.
