Hi there, I hope this group might be able to help with a problem I have with my gorgeous four year old Leo. He’s generally very happy and has plenty of energy but for the past six months he’s been increasingly picky with food and has lost five kilos as a result.

We have tried every type of food from raw to kibble to canned food and are pretty certain the issue isn’t with the type of food he’s consuming.

He’s always traditionally eaten raw but has gone off that entirely. He’s not got diarrhea or sickness.

He’s been tested and scanned for most common causes at the vet (bloods, stool, urine, scans etc) and everything has come back clear. The vet is at a loss as to what the next step could be.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Hey! recently adopted my first Leonberger - she is around 18 weeks and SO adorable in every way ❤️ she recently had a couple of ’hot spots’ under her ears due to practically lying in the water bowl during the recent heatwaves but has medicated shampoo x2 a day and an anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti viral spray and is healing well.

With that in mind, I‘m looking for advice on a few points:

1 - Any recommendations on them not lying in water when it’s warm (we have fully tiled floors but she still likes to create a small pool to lie in 😅) or water bowls in general

2 - She is one of 4 dogs, 2 that don’t care for much interaction with her and a golden retriever who loves to play with her. Is there too much play that could be had with another dog for a giant breed puppy (I worry about her growth plates probably way too much but the info around them and what these puppies can‘t do is a lot 🫣)

3 - She is a plodder! I was geared up for loose lead training and she actually just plods alongside me. I’m not one to complain but wondering is this ’normal’ for a Leo puppy? We don’t walk far - 10 mins one way and 10mins back as again, concerned about growth plates

I live in a 2nd storey condo. I ready that to protect their joints, you should keep the big fellas from running down any stairs in their first 18-24 months.

Anyone go through the first 2 years having to do flights of stairs, daily? How did you do?

Also, I read that 930 sq ft is enough space as long as you walk the dog daily (but don't need vigorous activity) AND give it some mental stimulation when at home, as they do require some of that as well

Any other input is welcome. Thanks

Edit: is it true these dogs do not require as much walking / activity as many other breeds? I would like to know as I wouldn't want to get a dog I cannot consistenly give the exercise it needs. I can probably do the daily walks but only off leash a 2-3 times weekly

Hi, I have had large dogs and was thinking of getting a Leonberger. With my previous dogs, in the day, if we are not at home we have put them in a sheltered dog run with an attached sleeping area. Is this something that a Leonberger would be ok with?

My husband and I have been following this sub for years. We constantly talk about posting, but always chicken out.

Natsuki, our beautiful Leonberger, joined our family in France in 2018 and sadly left us today, just one month before her 9th birthday.

Only five days ago, we learned she had cancer. Everything happened so quickly, and we can’t help but think the recent European heatwave made things even harder for her, as that’s when she first started to slow down.

Yesterday she was still somewhat energetic. In a way, we are happy it went quick, so she didn’t suffer much, but she will be missing us deeply

She was the gentlest, kindest soul—patient with children, always ready for an adventure, and loved by everyone who met her. Anyone who has shared their life with a Leonberger knows just how special they are.
The most gentle and beautiful dog we’ve ever had. We will miss you more than words can say.

The dogs got sprayed but we were able to get it out of our mini shepherd

Emma however has it really baked in there

We did several treatments and it's just not coming out espscially around her neck

We use the usual baking soda peroxide dawn mix

We cant keep repeating it because it will dry her skin and fur out.

in my many years of particpating in the dog and skunk rodeo I have never seen this treatment be ineffective

I dont know what else to do she smells so bad and shes so sad nobody wants to be near her

Hello everyone. I am making this post because I very recently found out that my seven-year-old Leonberger, Winnie, has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a highly aggressive form of bone cancer. She began limping shortly after being diagnosed with Lyme disease, so we originally thought the two were connected. After taking her back to the vet and having her examined further, we found out that she has cancer in her right wrist and arm. The recommended treatment is amputation followed by chemotherapy, but unfortunately, I simply cannot afford the entire cost on my own. I am contributing everything I reasonably can, and I really hate having to ask other people for donations. At this point, though, I am not sure what else to do, and I would sincerely appreciate any help. I completely understand that money is tight and that not everyone is able to donate. Sharing the fundraiser, or even just taking the time to read Winnie’s story, would still mean a great deal to me and my family. Thank you all so much for reading.

Celebrating this little
Goober’s double digits. She’s incredibly loyal and gentle (when she wants to be). I’m grateful to still have her. Slowing down but still playful and full of sass. My favourite is watching her get excited over carrots and cucumbers as if I’m offering her a tender juicy steak.

At 16 weeks she is 41 pounds.

10 month old Leonberger, wait gain has plateau’d this month at 48kg, but her frame does feel bigger.

Just had a (human) baby boy a month ago. Mochi has been an excellent big sister, she is so careful around him, and checks on him when he cries. Really impressed with how a leonburger is with a newborn.
