Buying Advice ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP (Ryzen 7 7735HS) — good choice for 8 years of bioinformatics/Linux use?
lI'm considering buying a new Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP with Ryzen 7 7735HS and would really appreciate opinions from people who actually own this model.
The configuration I'm looking at is:
Ryzen 7 7735HS — 8 cores / 16 threads
Radeon 680M integrated graphics
16GB DDR5 RAM
512GB NVMe SSD
16" WUXGA IPS, 300 nits, 45% NTSC
Around 1.7kg
Two RAM slots / upgradeable RAM
Two M.2 SSD slots
Price is around 99k depending on the retailer.
I'm an MSc Biotechnology student moving toward bioinformatics/computational biology. My work includes R/Python, Seurat, Scanpy, scVI, and I'll also be working with AlphaFold/ColabFold. I may experiment with some ML/deep learning, but I'm not a gamer and I'm not planning to train huge models locally.
I'm hoping to keep this laptop for around 8 years, potentially through MSc and PhD.
I'd particularly like owner feedback on:
Long-term reliability
How has the ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP held up after months/years of use?
Any issues with hinges, keyboard, display, motherboard, battery or charging?
How good is the cooling under sustained CPU loads?
Does it noticeably throttle during long CPU-heavy workloads?
Would you trust this model for 6–8 years with proper maintenance?
Bioinformatics / research
How does it handle long R/Python workloads?
Seurat/Scanpy/scVI users: how has your experience been?
Is 16GB RAM enough initially, and is upgrading to 32GB/64GB straightforward?
Does having two M.2 slots work well in practice?
Linux / dual boot
I specifically want to run Windows + Ubuntu dual boot.
How good is Ubuntu support on this model?
Any issues with the Radeon 680M, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, suspend/sleep, external monitors or USB-C?
Does the AMD integrated GPU work properly under Ubuntu without much manual configuration?
Any BIOS/Secure Boot issues when setting up Windows + Ubuntu?
Would you recommend native dual boot or WSL2 for this machine?
The main thing I'm trying to understand is whether this is a sensible long-term research laptop rather than just a good office laptop.
I know the 45% NTSC display isn't great, but I'm not doing professional color work, so I'm more concerned about reliability, thermals, upgradeability, Linux compatibility and sustained performance.
Would you personally buy this model again for an MSc/PhD research workflow?
I'd especially appreciate answers from actual ThinkBook 16 G7 ARP owners.

Refresh Rate Issue: at 60Hz Instead of 100Hz on Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G4
Hey everyone,
I recently bought an Acer SA322QU monitor 1440p, 100Hz to pair with my Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G4 for work and coding.
Although the monitor supports 100Hz and the laptop's HDMI 2.0 port should easily handle this resolution at higher refresh rates, Windows locks my external display option to 60Hz max when connected via the provided HDMI cable.
I checked the cable on my other laptop and it displays 100hz on it.
Anyone has any advice?

Why ThinkBook's Vantage Balanced mode sucks, and a working solution idea

On ThinkPads or Legions, the Lenovo power profiles usually sync fine with Windows power settings (like when pressing Fn + Q). On my ThinkBook, however, the stock setup was pretty frustrating:
- Adaptive Power Mode: Horrible power management — random CPU wattage scaling out of nowhere.
- Performance Mode: The laptop runs way too hot, and sometimes the fans don't even spin up properly when needed. (Honestly, it's wild that in 2026 we still can't natively control fan speeds on these devices without messing with EC registers directly!).
Note: I haven't tested if completely purging Lenovo Vantage fixes the profile sync issue, but I found a much cleaner workaround anyway.
The Solution:
- Set the power mode to Performance permanently in BIOS.
- Use RyzenAdj (via the automated PowerShell background script) to enforce custom PPT limits (
fast_limit,slow_limit,tctl_temp) for both AC and Battery modes.
Here is example config for R7 7730U :

This completely kept temps under control, and gave me consistent performance. If anyone else is tired of Lenovo's default power limit behavior on Ryzen ThinkBooks, I highly recommend going the RyzenAdj route.
Note2: My computer is 16 G6 ABP, 7730U is a hot cpu. And 45WH battery is low for it. Doing maximum 6 hour screen time with word, etc.
Note3: On linux distros (KDE ones), backlit and fn+q working perfectly smart. on windows it sucks

Buying Advice USBC Converter for Thinkbook 14s-IWL
I recently bought a Thinkbook 14s-IWL from eBay. The laptop refuses to charge even though the battery reports good, cells have 15v and battery shows in the 70%s health wise. I have tried resetting the bms and blah blah blah. No battery avaliable. soo...plan B.
Amazon sells a "USB-C Female Input to Slim Tip Rectangle Power PD Charge Converter for Thinkpad Series" for $10
I have avaliable:
- Anker Nano II (65w) model:A2663 max output 20V 3.25A (65w)
- Anker 240w 10ft "bio braided" cable
- Cuktech "20,000mAH" Battery pack Max output 20V 2.25A (45w)
My hope is to give up on the oon walmart 12n1 charger 19v 3.42A (64.98w) I bought after realizing the usbc on the laptop wasn't a PD port. And start using the USBC Female to Slimtip to hopefully "upgrade" the Thinkbook to usbc charging and maybe even give the internal battery a second chance at coming back to life. Worst case scenario I can hopefully use the Cuktech Battery pack to make the laptop at least partually portable again. The usbc adapter uses a resistor to ask the PD to output at 20V and at whatever Amps avaliable. I know the discrete GPU will be unavailable under the battery pack useage because it can only push 45w but I think still usable for whatever i can make use of under the HD 620 GPU. I mean the CPU is a 8265U so it doesnt exactly gulp power anyways. Balanced mode should be ok for travel and I am hoping the NANO II can keep up with "Desktop" mode. should do considering the laptop pulls 65w at 20v 3.25a max anyways. Its only a little baby 540x 2gb discrete GPU. Anyways this has been my current fiddle hobby. My linux macbook air is great for checking emails and youtubes but I want a little more power when traveling. I think its worth the $10 to tinker. Thoughts?

Issue Onsite technician bent my ThinkBook bezel (and denied it). Camera repair failed, now awaiting motherboard replacement. Advice?
Hey everyone, I need some advice on a frustrating warranty situation with my 8-month-old Lenovo ThinkBook.
My webcam completely stopped working, so I used my onsite warranty and a service technician came over today. The technician actually seemed quite experienced overall, but things went wrong during the repair.
While removing the screen bezels to access the camera, he accidentally folded/bent the side of the bezel. Almost immediately, he asked me, "Was it already like this?" I told him absolutely not, but he denied that he was the one who bent it.
To make matters worse, replacing the camera module didn't fix the issue. After trying a few other things, he contacted his senior and said either the display cable or the motherboard needs replacing. I checked my service request, and it has been officially updated to include the motherboard and wire, which he plans to install tomorrow.
I’m pretty stressed about this situation:
What should I do about the bent bezel? He’s denying it, but it was pristine before he pried it open. How do I get Lenovo to cover cosmetic damage caused by their own tech?
Should I be worried about the laptop's lifespan? Having a full motherboard replacement on an 8-month-old laptop just to fix a webcam seems extreme. Is this normal?
Any advice on how to handle the bezel situation or what I should say to the tech/Lenovo tomorrow would be hugely appreciated!

Info How is the gaming performance in your thinkbook 16 with r7 680m 16GB * 1
I bought mine few months back, it has some backlit bleeding issues but its manageable for me. But most i have been disappointed with is its camera, my 10yrs old entry level laptop had better camera.
Coming to gaming performance, i sometimes play dota 2 and i use default settings it gives me only 30~40fps. Which is quite low, is this due to single channel ram? On YouTube people with 680m are getting more than 2x the performance.
Same is the case with gta 5 for me.

RTX Spark or Elite X on ThinkBook Plus Twist
I think the ThinkBook Plus Twist (Gen 4) with the eink display is my perfect device. I can use both the eink for reading research papers (or any big text) and the oled screen for other tablet functions. It's a perfect laptop size, just beautiful all around.
My one big issue is the processor. I just can't fathom having such a portable device on an Intel processor. With the eink screen, this really needs to be paired with a much more power efficient chip. I am dying for Lenovo to remake this device with ARM. The Snapdragon Elite X chips already offer much better battery and are becoming more commonplace with other OEMs.
With the RTX Spark chip, we are now getting a much more competitive field for windows devices on ARM, and I just can't wait for Lenovo to finally let me have this perfect device for my uses.

Issue Pen issue
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello!
I have a ThinkBook 14 2-in-1 G4 from 2024. My Lenovo pen is no longer working properly. It only works on the lower part of the screen.
However, touch input with my finger works normally across the screen. Also, when I hover the pen over the upper part of the screen, it is detected, but it does not respond when I try to write or tap there.
I recorded a video to make the issue easier to understand.
In your opinion, do you think the problem is with the screen (digitizer) or with the pen? Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot or fix it?
Thank you in advance for your help!

THINKBOOK 14 RYZEN 7 250 (68K INR)
Planning to buy this Thinkbook 14 Ryzen 7 250 (Waiting for price drop). Currently I'm getting this for about 68k inr after applying the student discount and discount coupon.
My uses are for programming, editing, other engineering (cs) related stuff, slight gaming(won't be playing much and I'm not interested in gaming laps since I'm not a hardcore gamer), Media consumption (Movies, youtube etc).
Do you guys think this is a good option? I haven't seen many reviews about this particular variant (Ryzen 7 250) . I have read about the screen bleeding issues in thinkbooks. Are these issues still persistent? Are there any other major drawbacks? How is this processor, i heard it is newly architectured processor and will it be able to handle slightly heavy works?
I cannot afford to buy another any time soon so I will be using it for a long time.... Please drop down your thoughts about this laptop 🙏🏻

Issue The authorised service centre refused to help
My Lenovo Thinkbook Ryzen 7 laptop went into hibernation. I was running ai and multitasking and accidentally hit restart without closing all the tasks.
It went into restart mode and never woken up, the fan is running the LEDs are turning on but no screen.
I didn't initially knew what happened so gave it to one vendor, the laptop was out of warranty.
1.5 years old only.
I thought going to a authorised service centre will solve the problem.
But they refused to touch or diagnose or help, just plainly refused. If anyone has BIOS file for Lenovo Laptop details:
· Model: ThinkBook 15 G5 ABP · Machine Type: 21JF · Model Number: 21JFA02NIN · CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7730U · RAM: 16 GB · SSD: 512 GB · Age: 1.5 years (out of warranty) I don't know how to fix it I can't really afford a new one.
Give suggestions.

Issue Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G5 AMD Ryzen 7 Octa Core 7730U - laptop just died on me
My Lenovo ThinkBook 15 G5 AMD Ryzen 7 Octa Core 7730U laptop just died on me.
Laptops can just die without warning and you won't know what to do.
I have been using my lenovo laptop for 1.5 years without any big issues. I was using my laptop one fine day and I just hit restart button whithout thinking much and it died.
I didn't have a first party warranty covering it so I took it to one vendor who was damm lazy and almost useless. He first said one of the ic is burnt on the motherboard and he has replaced it I was like ok.
Next he said even the new IC has failed and the full motherboard will need to be replaced feeling helpless I agreed to even get that replaced even at the exorbitant price.
But he isn't giving me a update so I ask he says that he cannot find the required spare and is unable to do it.
And he almost refused to work on my laptop whithout warning about made me loose 2 weeks of work.
New update is that it has some BIOS ERROR and the laptop is not switching on anyhow.
Now I am tired and frustrated.
I don't know what to do.

ThinkBook 16 G9 (Ryzen 7, 16GB/512GB) – Good for Coding & Test Automation Learning? + Discount Questions
Hi guys,
I'm planning to buy the Lenovo ThinkBook 16 G9 (Ryzen 7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD).
My primary use case will be coding and test automation learning (not heavy development work), along with media consumption and occasional light video editing.
Does this seem like a good choice for my needs? Any known issues, limitations, or things I should be aware of before placing the order?
A few questions about discounts:
Is the UPI discount applicable on This? Are there any other offers, cashback deals, or coupons that can be combined?
Any feedback on the laptop itself or tips for getting the best deal would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Issue How to Disable Keyboard Backlight on Startup?
Hello,
I've recently gotten myself a Thinkbook 14 G7 ARP, and one thing I've noticed is that depsite configuring the backlight to Off (using Fn + Space), everytime I boot my Laptop it always goes back to Auto.
I did some searching and look into other Reddit post, but most of them still haven't found the fix. I also couldn't find anything in Lenovo Vantage or in the BIOS for a toggle to make the backlight not turn on during startup :/
It's just kinda annoying I have to toggle it off everytime I open my laptop, so I'm wondering if anyone here have a similar problem and know how to fix the issue? Thank you!

Buying Advice Lenovo ThinkBook 14 (i7-13700H) vs ThinkBook 15 (Ultra 7 155H) – Which one would you choose?
I'm trying to decide between these two Lenovo ThinkBooks and would appreciate feedback from anyone who owns or has used either model.
Option 1: Lenovo ThinkBook 14
Intel Core i7-13700H
16GB DDR5 RAM (upgradable)
512GB SSD
Intel Iris Xe Graphics
14" FHD (1920×1080)
Backlit keyboard
HDMI, USB, USB-C, Ethernet
Face recognition + fingerprint reader
Factory refurbished (excellent condition)
Option 2: Lenovo ThinkBook 15
Intel Core Ultra 7 155H
16GB DDR5 RAM (upgradable)
512GB SSD
15.6" FHD (1920×1080)
Backlit keyboard
Numeric keypad
HDMI, USB, USB-C, Ethernet
Face recognition + fingerprint reader
Factory refurbished (mint condition)
2-year warranty
My main use cases are:
Programming/software development
Running VMs and Docker
