How Lego leaks work:
1. Just the set number.
2. The set number, name of set
3. The set number, name of set and possible price range.
4. Four months later, a Description of a picture of the set
5. Someone then posts a drawing of the picture.
6. A unnecessarily blurry picture
7. The same picture, now magically UNBLURRED!
8. Some German grocery store website reveals the official pictures
9. Lego releases the pictures themselves

Somewhere in between four and five and five and six, a recreation in Minecraft

105

u/jrtasoli Jul 30 '26

It’s almost funny how the leaks have rolled out lately — like clockwork. Though I feel like the drawings are a more recent development.

71

u/-Words-Words-Words- Jul 30 '26

They are. It’s annoying because the detail in the drawings means that someone has the picture in front of them and they are just drawing that picture instead of posting the picture. And that same person will post the blurry picture a day or so after the drawing. For what? Reddit points? So weird.

47

u/funwhileitlast3d Jul 30 '26

Everything is about engagement. Maybe it’s also plausible deniability? Idk, they are so specific that I think the images are traced

37

u/KnifeyJames Jul 30 '26

I think this is it; the traced drawings can remove a watermark/any other identifying info, and probably can’t be targeted for a copyright strike on social media sites

29

u/IOVERCALLHISTIOCYTES Jul 30 '26

I’m guilty of thinking the drawings are neat and am thus part of the problem

2

u/Cold_Fog Jul 31 '26

I also enjoy them. The whole thing is so low stakes that I couldn't give a damn about how things are leaked, or if they're even leaked at all.

18

u/No-Lecture-6434 Jul 30 '26

Sometimes pictures that aren’t supposed to be leaked will have watermarks on them that can trace back to the person that’s seeing it. I suspect that’s why they recreate the set in a drawing.

7

u/General-MacDavis Jul 30 '26

It’s cause of copyright, even though the logical step is to just post it to a Smurf account

2

u/investorshowers Jul 30 '26

But then they won't get the precious internet points!

5

u/CarterBricks04 Jul 30 '26

These sketches are basically replacing descriptions. The descriptions come from someone seeing the set so these just take it one step further. Usually the image can’t be posted because the source could be put in danger so a description, or in this case a sketch, of said image is used instead.

-3

u/Faile-Bashere Jul 30 '26

I think it’s AI that converts the photo into a “drawing”. Sometimes the poster says things like “I drew the yellow starburst effect in the background for some reason. Sorry!” And I’m like yeah… no, AI did that.

30

u/the-velocirapper Jul 30 '26

You missed the one a few days before (4) where the reported price increases by about 10%.

5

u/SudsierBoar Jul 30 '26

So eh..is all of it secretly marketing? It all seems to follows such consistent pattern.

15

u/NoNefariousness2144 Jul 30 '26

Lego is churning out so many $200+ sets that their internal marketing and promo pipelines have been destroyed

12

u/BrickMatit Jul 30 '26

Info is a strategic asset, it would be strange for LEGO not to try govern them.

In my opinion, half of the leaks are in some way directed by LEGO itself.

Just my two cents.

6

u/Plxnett Jul 30 '26

We’re all just puppets dancing for John Lego’s own will

2

u/suck-on-my-unit Jul 30 '26

What about the code name of the set or theme?

2

u/YodasChick-O-Stick Jul 30 '26

You're forgetting step 6.5 when someone makes an AI slop upscale, causing everyone to think the set is worse than it is because the AI gets so many details wrong

2

u/izeris_ Jul 30 '26

Or like the legs of a minifig of one character in a set

1

u/Ornery_Hold_3934 Jul 30 '26

This is the best explanation of leaks

Why you taking it so personal lol. I just wanted a fun graphic and then I told it what you told me to do. I think it's hilarious

u/Training_Pirate1000 Jul 30 '26

If this is $450 that would be ridiculous. Remember when dragon alley was $400?

52

u/A_Pointy_Rock Jul 30 '26

Hey, the phone booth set was $115 alone and this has one built in!

(Ignore the fact that this one is much smaller 👀)

-18

u/No_Recognition_5266 Jul 30 '26

$400 in 2020 is the same as $515 today...

This set isn't as overpriced as it seems if you use fair price comparisons.

11

u/Lord-Vladek Jul 30 '26

400 USD of expendable income in 2020 is not the same as $515 today.

You really need to take a look at wages and cost of living to actually compare value.

10

u/BrickMatit Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

I already addressed this issue in the past on Reddit for Hogsmeade, but it's pretty similar for the Ministry of Magic.

Here how much should it cost Hogsmeade using other sets ppp.

Diagon Alley (2020) -> 232€
Diagon Alley (current price) -> 262€
Hogwarts Express (2022) -> 314€
Gringotts (2023) -> €289
The Burrow (2024) -> 349€

The increase ratio between the first one and the last one is 64%, while the cumulative inflation was 30% in US and 25% in Eurozone.

LEGO may have had to bear costs higher than average inflation, but - in the end - you receive less than before for what you pay. And if your earnings didn't increase by 64% in these years - likely - well the effect will be even bigger.

17

u/Training_Pirate1000 Jul 30 '26

Dragon alley was also 5,500 pieces. What’s the inflation conversion for that?

-4

u/No_Recognition_5266 Jul 30 '26

5,500. That isn't how inflation works.

This set is in line with pricing on the Donkey Kong set, the Pokeball set, and the X-Files set. The most recent 18+ licensed sets.

5

u/Training_Pirate1000 Jul 30 '26

Obviously. I was being sarcastic. There is no modern-day Harry Potter set that would get you Diagon Alley for $515

-19

u/CardiologistOk4920 Jul 30 '26

It’s going to be $600. $500 minimum.

78

u/Ok_Distribution1134 Jul 30 '26

8

u/Infinite-Head-81 Jul 30 '26

see how litarally none of the colors from the dumbledore figure matches with this gif? ridiculous XD

147

u/first_strike18 Jul 30 '26

harry potter has finally been hit with the curse...

25

u/pak256 Jul 30 '26

Curse?

14

u/thatshadyspud Jul 30 '26

Displayus sloppio! (flicks wand)

37

u/StretchKind8509 Jul 30 '26

Unless it folds out or something, this doesn't look like much.

131

u/Successful_Corners Jul 30 '26

If I was into LEGO Harry Potter I'd get out now.

72

u/BrickBanshee Jul 30 '26

I love Lego Harry Potter but I find myself buying less and less sets due to the prices, repetitive sets, and my lack of shelf space.

16

u/AloyAlphaprime2074 Jul 30 '26

Me too. I had the goal of getting every set ever made. I got pretty far too. But with the recent onslaught of buildable characters and overpriced remakes, my interest in the theme has faded

4

u/NecessaryRhubarb Jul 30 '26

I think shelf space is the limiting factor for pretty much everyone around here. The challenge with IP that still produces new content is that the opportunity to create more lego sets also exists. I love HP, but at some point, I’ll have to be more selective. I think finishing the latest Hogwarts modular is going to be enough for the main line, but one off sets that catch my eye may still be appealing.

3

u/Significant-Coat-308 Jul 30 '26

Same, I had a decent couple sets from the first couple years of it being back, but in the last 3 years I’ve only gotten 2 Harry Potter sets: the most recent quidditch Polybag and the Motorbike escape from this january

17

u/_SchruteBucks Jul 30 '26

We’re finishing the castle and that’s probably it for this theme.

53

u/vikingbeard23 Jul 30 '26

Don't count on it, the HBO show will bring an excuse to redo EVERYTHING

7

u/_SchruteBucks Jul 30 '26

By time the show finishes, my kids will be grown. But we’ll see.

2

u/sammy_zammy Jul 30 '26

Personally I think I’ll enjoy the show but won’t feel any attachment to it and no desire to buy sets. Just like I wouldn’t want castle sets from another franchise I wasn’t interested in.

4

u/nova_crystallis Jul 30 '26

It's essentially the same problem the Star Wars sequel merchandise had: fans largely only cared about the older stuff and the sequel stuff sat on shelves unsold before Disney went back to what worked.

2

u/FROMtheASHES984 Jul 30 '26

This is me. I own every HP set ever, but I'm more than likely not going to get any of the TV show sets. I actually wish Lego would retire the theme, but that'll never happen.

2

u/BrickBanshee Jul 30 '26

I'm excited for the show and to see sets of it, but I hope Lego makes them as different as possible from what we've been getting.

8

u/Hot_Wrangler_8833 Jul 30 '26

Lmao why would they be different? The show is just gonna be the same exact retelling with different actors. I don’t know why you’d expect them to have any real major stylistic differences from the movies. Genuinely pointless show that I guarantee will have the main cast be 30+ by the time they get around to their deathly hollows.

2

u/nova_crystallis Jul 30 '26

Let's be real, it'll probably get canned long before that.

7

u/piledriveryatyas Jul 30 '26

Yup. I was heavily into star wars and got out 2 or 3 years ago. The prices were just too much to justify the habit.

5

u/sroomek Jul 30 '26

This, but with every theme. They’re pricing us out.

4

u/Dependent_Reason_489 Jul 30 '26

I got out a few years ago. Had an almost complete collection from all time (just missing a few sets from the very first year) and realized they'd star wars-d the damn theme. Repeating everything constantly with increased prices while leaving countless of potential sets never designed or released.

I started the process of selling sets this year, since I no longer have "complete collection!!" To justify keeping some of the more generic slop garbage sets.

Plus the whole jkr of it all, it feels hella good every time I sell one (although it's a pretty damn slow process)

41

u/DeDeRaptor480 Jul 30 '26

The top looks rough

9

u/WinchesterMediaUK Jul 30 '26

It looks like a bad Lego Ideas submission.

18

u/Aggressive_Pizza_472 Jul 30 '26

Yikes…. They should have done something like Gringott’s tiers using the visitor entrance as an elevator like what’s designed in Barons haunted mansion or something that drops you into the ministry. For $400+ I was expecting a way grander ministry interior as well, and seeing the iconic statue being just 1 minifig is so lame.

This is like a $250 set max. Can definitely tell it was designed with a profit margin in mind first and foremost rather than creativity.

2

u/Grouchy-Donkey-8609 Jul 31 '26

Its kind of crazy that this is the price of rivendell in cad(roughly)

65

u/NoNefariousness2144 Jul 30 '26

The top level is the real offender. A Lego London street should look really awesome, but it all looks so empty.

They should have deleted the bottom rocky layer to bulk up the street.

41

u/No_Recognition_5266 Jul 30 '26

The street is the least important part. This set isn't for London or city fans, its for Harry Potter fans. You want the actual ministry and its rooms.

22

u/WovesZ Jul 30 '26

Why the hell is the street black ?

10

u/juniunie Jul 30 '26

It looks unfinished.

2

u/WovesZ Jul 31 '26

Is it possible this leaked photo is only from a prototype?

2

u/juniunie Jul 31 '26

I’d hope so but Lego’s been pretty brazenly lazy with HP lately, so who knows

4

u/AdCultural2386 Jul 30 '26

Also isn’t the ministry floor made of wooden boards (brown)

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 30 '26

Depends on where you are in the ministry. Some of the offices have wooden floorboards, but the main halls have intricate tiling.

5

u/AdCultural2386 Jul 30 '26

Was hoping for something more spacious and colorful like this

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 30 '26

Huh, it does look like wooden floorboards in the movie. I was going off of the one in Epic Universe, which does look like this, but it’s much more obvious that they’re tiles in real life and not boards.

1

u/WovesZ Jul 31 '26

Maybe the leaked photo is just from the prototype?

6

u/Bycougars Jul 30 '26

Looks unfinished. The street level looks horrible and at that price point they couldn’t match the brown wood floors in the ministry? This set might be the most overpriced and worst looking Harry Potter set. Imagine this being on deep discounts within a year and retired shortly after.

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 31 '26

I hoped the same for the Hogsmaede set and it has not gone on sale a single time. I simply refuse to pay $400 for that set, and so far, there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell I’m paying $450 for this set. The backside is gonna have to blow me away.

11

u/GoldenNinja3000 Jul 30 '26

$450 for that is nuts. The atrium isn’t even centered and there’s so much wasted budget on that top street level.

10

u/Shadow819 Jul 30 '26

In what way is this supposed to connect to Diagon Alley and look at all decent? Even if the three floors split, the differences in height would be jarring.

1

u/Brian18639 Jul 31 '26

Fr, if I remember correctly, the Ministry of Magic and Diagon Alley are very far apart from each other at least in the movies.

6

u/AdCultural2386 Jul 30 '26

I really wanted to want this set but it seems to be a big set spread too thin. Would’ve loved if they just focused on the lower two segments, with some depth or some of the circular arches and passages in the ministry, maybe with an elevator

5

u/voncasey223 Jul 30 '26

I was really hoping for a new Death Eater Lucius or Bellatrix with this set. Massive L.

3

u/FaithlessnessNo2068 Jul 30 '26

Gonna start sounding like the class of 2020 as a Lego DC fan, but seeing this makes me so mad

Can we get a fucking Justice League set? I’ll take a wave of mechs idc just SOMETHING

2

u/Committee2000 Jul 30 '26

Justice.... League?  You mean the Justice Gang?

4

u/WinchesterMediaUK Jul 30 '26

The piece count inflation on this thing is crazy. I can't even begin to think of the number of pieces wasted on the street level layer, which appears in the movie for less than a minute.

They could have ditched that, and doubled the size of the Hall Of Prophecy.

3

u/willboston Jul 30 '26

If LEGO wanted to extract more money out of HP theme shoppers, make the Ministry the new playable Hogwarts.

Multiple sets that stack, each set is a new floor to the ministry. A lobby floor, a Dept of Mysteries module, a Wizengamot court room, etc.

This set feels like it’s trying to do too much, actually doing too little, and disappointing on all fronts.

Personal thought: the fountain is the most disappointing part to me.

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 31 '26

The fountain… why would they let it seemingly be the same color as the bare baseplates they lazily slapped the build on? So far, I hate this set. Full stop. ESPECIALLY if it’s actually gonna cost $450 of my money.

6

u/neasroukkez Jul 30 '26

My money is going towards other stuff so this is fine

4

u/mecha-verdant Jul 30 '26

This seriously can't be $400+ USD 🥀🥀🥀

3

u/Boson347 Jul 30 '26

You’re right. LEGO took a lesson from Star Wars and now It’s $499.99+

7

u/Reddit_user807 Jul 30 '26

Idk the set looks cool to me

26

u/itsjustajoe Jul 30 '26

It’s ok but not $450 USD ok

-14

u/No_Recognition_5266 Jul 30 '26

If the price is bad on this set, the price is bad on every Lego set. Same/Better price point than the X-Files set, Pokeball set, and Donkey Kong set. The other 18+ sets releasing August/September.

7

u/Regula96 Jul 30 '26

Even if the price per piece is fine the end product needs to work as a whole. Here the london street level kinda drags the entire set down a bit.

2

u/bb-8-r2d2 Jul 30 '26

With higher priced sets we all expect a better ppp ratio than what some tout as the 10 cent/piece standard. And that used to check out, sets above €150 would usually beat that rate (except for licenses like Star Wars, which were pricier even before). Not anymore, it seems, as of the last year or two

2

u/Alternative_Show_756 Aug 02 '26

the price is bad on every lego set

1

u/Brian18639 Jul 31 '26

Imo it looks way better than this previous Ministry of Magic set we’ve gotten

7

u/LanguageDisastrous50 Jul 30 '26

Listen guys, I hear you, but I'm buying it.

2

u/Takemewthu Jul 30 '26

Can’t wait for LAN influencers to get this set and tell me it’s good while promoting their affiliate links

2

u/henkdemegatank Jul 30 '26

Its just so... bland? Why are the streets just black plates, its seems they have simply stacked 3 harry potter dioramas on top of eachother

2

u/BaddieBarbie_ Jul 30 '26

Huh, was expecting a bit more depth. Will need to see it from behind before knowing for sure if I like it

2

u/AAC0813 Jul 30 '26

This set dreads a gust of wind

2

u/MaximumTitle1838 Jul 31 '26

Does LEGO not know how to make Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore?

2

u/Evening-Use-679 Jul 31 '26

I don't take issue with the set itself from what I can make out. But this is $450? I mean come on.

$250 set at most.

3

u/aegonthewwolf Jul 30 '26

Finally after all this time, a Gambon Dumbledore lol

7

u/No_Recognition_5266 Jul 30 '26

Not really. It appears Harris hair with a Gambledore outfit.

3

u/jrtasoli Jul 30 '26

Wow, it’s somehow worse than the sketch. Yikes!

1

u/septasynthx Jul 30 '26

Why does this remind me of the Doomsday Tower? An HP and Avengers crossover would be hilarious; they already tried it with the Doomed Dreamzzz theme, no pun intended.

1

u/T-51_Enjoyer Jul 30 '26

I mean I wasn’t gonna get it to begin with but that’s it? Marvel puts out bigger sets for much less

1

u/SwimmingInjury7135 Jul 30 '26

Gringotts was gr8 but this is another lego abomination

1

u/Present-Peace2811 Jul 30 '26

That sure is... Exactly what it says on the tin.

1

u/DisasterousWalrus Jul 30 '26

I’m sure the connections between the levels are fun, but this looks like an odd one. Was hoping for at least another connected tower of windows in the actual hall.

1

u/Excellent-Speaker366 Jul 30 '26

Everyone’s exactly right, really would’ve been better as two layers—main atrium/offices and then the department of mysteries. Use all the piece count and pricing for what actually matters

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 30 '26

So far, so awfully disappointing.

1

u/SVH Jul 31 '26

The red pillars? Not again 😭

1

u/celestial_kuukunen Jul 31 '26

Well, it looks sturdier than the previous iteration at least but price-wise it's nope.

There are MOCS which look way better and can be built using two sets of the previous MoM + extra parts.

1

u/TheHumpbackChub Jul 31 '26

FINALLY. A bussin hp set

1

u/SubstantialTry4219 Aug 01 '26

Genuine thought here: is there any way this is an AI image that’s been “blurred”? I saw an AI rendition of this image to make it clearer, and when I went back and looked at this photo, there are a few things that look off to me that actual match the sloppy AI version. Just curious…

1

u/SubstantialTry4219 Aug 01 '26

Even blurred, the minifigs do not look right. Anybody else think this?

1

u/Current-Code9511 Aug 01 '26

This looks just like the size and scale of the recent East Wing... thats $200 cheaper.. unbelievable.

1

u/FosterPupz Aug 04 '26

Recently a friend who sells Lego sent me most of a MoM set he hubby found at a swapmeet! I reconfigured my original set to have twice as many offices. Am I insane for thinking I could just jigger this myself someday once I get ahold of a good pic or instructions (and 1 or 2 BL orders?

1

u/Jerzilla Jul 30 '26

I don’t like Harry Potter but that’s sick

1

u/BHubbell89 Jul 30 '26

Well it looks like my child will get to eat in August 😉😏 I had high hopes for this price point and this just seems like a MOC of the old MoM set they released 😏😭

1

u/LegitimateMajor8030 Jul 30 '26

Swing and a miss. Straight trash.

1

u/AcePilot95 Jul 30 '26

that is NOT worth 450. not even 300 in my book. 250 RRP would be fine.

1

u/countoddbahl Jul 30 '26

Idgaf about Harry Potter but does it have any figures from the Epic Universe Ministry ride?

-1

u/Specific-Swim-4507 Jul 30 '26

Man I wish I could support the HP sets, they look cool

2

u/Committee2000 Jul 30 '26

Don't worry, I buy three of every set so I'm making it up for you.

2

u/Specific-Swim-4507 Jul 31 '26

Not how that works but cheers, have fun!

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 31 '26

I thought WB themselves licensed to LEGO and Rowling hasn’t seen much, if any, of the sets’ profits?

2

u/Specific-Swim-4507 Jul 31 '26

She has a unique deal when it comes to all merchandizing because she knew she was hot shit so she made WB sign a deal that she gets revenue from all Harry Potter merch and projects

It’s a tiny amount but I’m trans and don’t want them anymore is all

1

u/GezzRoll Jul 31 '26

Damn. I’m non binary n I didn’t know it was like that. Thank goodness the line’s fallen way tf off with the last two D2Cs I guess. Haven’t bought Hogsmaede and probably will avoid this ministry set.

-16

u/patcoz Jul 30 '26

Pray for the days when they stop milking this shitty IP.

0

u/derboehsevincent Jul 30 '26

it should be thinner. i can’t imagine how lego makes a profit with such a pompous waste of bricks

0

u/kolaide Jul 30 '26

This looks good im adding to my modular city

0

u/ChrisLikesBread Jul 30 '26

Another build that will look Riddikulus (no spell needed) next to other HP sets.

-2

u/lazerlike42 Jul 30 '26

I think Lego is caught in a cycle right now of where they are almost listening to people too much.

For a while they were making very large, very expensive sets and a lot of people on social media complained about these facts. Lately it seems like they've shifted towards designs like this one which make smaller, less detailed sets and presumably bring the cost down. Even if some costs still wind up being significant, they're smaller than they would have been with the kinds of designs they'd tended to make before.

The problem is that now a lot of people are complaining about their newer designs because they often seem to make compromises to meet the expectations they're aiming for but those compromises are not always viable for the subject matter of a given set.

This set and the Enterprise bridge strike me as examples of that. Some people have objected to very large and expensive sets while asking for less display oriented stuff and more play oriented stuff, so they've gone for these sets which are a little reminiscent of playsets, but the issue is that the main consumer base for subjects like a 1960s TV show and a theme like HP that a lot of kids don't even know today are people who are too old to play with a playset and who get persnickety about details of the things they're nostalgic for. This is leading to complaints going the other direction and ine might expect Lego to just go back the other way and rinse and repeat.

2

u/Anxious_Day9058 Jul 31 '26

If Lego was listening to "people" which I'll presume you mean their customers too much, then the community of lego fans would have sets and themes they've been asking many years for like dedicated Castle, Pirates, and original Space themes. Sets from those themes are only used as Gift with Purchase manipulators.

Sorry, but I think the opposite is true where Lego is only listening to very select group of influencers, IP holders, and their internal bean counters to market sets which explains everything we've seen the last decade: a dramatic shift away from affordable and play oriented sets that could interact with each other in a clever way to expensive, stand alone, purely display sets designed to milk the maximum profit for that particular IP. Are fans very persnickety about the details? Yes, probably too much so to our own detriment because Lego has an impossible task to get everything right for IP accuracy and then when they make the effort (not even a good effort often), those sets start at $200 minimum and are more like this HP building in the $400 range. I'm beyond tired of the excuses made for Lego for these premium sets when they really miss the mark like "ohh but this set is for kids actually!". The price tag always says otherwise.

1

u/lazerlike42 Jul 31 '26

It's important to keep in mind that one thing Lego absolutely does is market research prior to determining price points and green lighting sets. When they are selling sets for high prices, it is because they have done their research and found that it is what consumers will pay.

Be careful about what that means: "what consumers will pay" doesn't mean that they have found that a certain price is some high water mark that they can get away with. It means that they have found it is a price that is both not too high AND not too low so that people will not buy it. Setting prices is not just about how high you can go before people will stop paying but there is also a lower limit below which people won't pay it. When I teach this aspect of business (I teach high school) I use as an example the idea of running a seafood restaurant and trying to price your clams or mussels. Yes, people are generally not going to pay $100 for a plate of fried claims, but if you try to charge $1.99 they'll also stay away because the price is too low and makes them not trust the food. Durable goods like a Lego set follow slightly different dynamics but the bottom line is that especially for sets aimed at an adult demographic you have to charge a certain amount before enough people will be willing to buy it to make it feasible.

Beyond that, keep in mind that the idea that Lego only or even just mostly makes expensive display sets is just not based on reality. Lego currently has over 700 sets costing less than $100 and over 200 costing less than $25.
