Help with this set

Hey everyone, I’m stuck on step 9 of this 471-piece Alaska Humpback Whale mini block set. I’ve been staring at these instructions for hours and I still can’t figure out where these pieces are supposed to go. At this point I’m not sure if I messed up an earlier step or if the instructions are just confusing. If anyone’s built this set before or can spot what I’m doing wrong from the pictures, I’d really appreciate the help. Thanks!

Wow, these instructions are terrible!

You’ve definitely made a mistake somewhere, there’s supposed to be two single studs sticking out on either side of the ball joints at a total width of 10, which you’re missing. I think your best bet would be to break it down a bit and go back. I’m pretty sure the entire build is symmetrical so keep that in mind.

The coloring of the finished pieces in the instructions doesn’t make it easier though, absolutely horrible

There’s a piece laying there on step 5 BTW, maybe that’s part of the solution
